INTRODUCTION

Spain, and more specifically, the General Office of State Archives (dependent on the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport), as a partner of the ENArC Network, has worked on the description, indexing and digitization of a part of the rich medieval charters collections held in the Clergy Section of the National Historical Archives.

project4. Results and statistics

1. SCOPE

Documents of the Galician monasteries, specially from:Benedictine OrderCistercian Order

Galicia was one of the first regions of the Iberian peninsula in which monastic life was established.

Therefore, there are a lot of charters dating from the 9th century onwards.

2. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT

Project was developed since 2011 till 2014.

Main tasks: identification, description, digitization and dissemination of the charters.

Coordination between the different tasks and working groups was made by Description and Preservation Departments of the AHN and the General Office of State Archives.

2. DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT

International standards: ISAD (G) and ISAAR (CPF). Spanish Standard for Indexing, made by the General Office of State Archives.

Two people with a specific trainning in medieval latin, galician language and medieval scripts (principally visigothic, caroline and gothic scripts).

The General Office of State Archives is in charge of the dissemination on the Internet: Pares/Mom/Apex

3.DIFICULTIES The variety of languages

(multilingualism): Latin, Romance and Galician languages with unknown words and specific expressions.

Special casuistic of the galician palaeography, with different evolution than in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula: abbreviations, lines, etc.

3.DIFICULTIES

Identification of different pieces of charter in order to complete the genuine charter: some documents were found in several pieces and stored in different folders at provincial tax offices.

Pares/Mom allow to join image and description in right monastery fond, respecting original reference code.

Monasteries of San Xoán de Poioand Santa María de Armenteira

3.DIFICULTIES

Physical conditions of the documents:

In a humid environment (Galicia), parchment absorbs excessive quantities of water: several damages, mould/fungus,tears, folds and deformation of parchment, etc. Interventive procedures were necessary in some cases.

Problems of reading.

Monastery of San Salvador de Lérez
