Welcome from the Chief Executive, Malta Tourism Authority
Paul BuġejaChief ExecutiveMalta Tourism Authority
There is little doubt that Malta is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, despite real competition. Season after season, the increase in the number of tourists who visit the islands is indicative of this success, together with indications on factors such as expenditure per capita, which make Malta not only a frequented destination, but also a quality destination.
There is not one, solitary factor leading to this success. Rather, it as an interlinked set of optimal ingredients. Malta’s weather is a primary element. This extensive calendar of events would be rather different, had we not been able to boast of practically 365 days of sunshine. Many welcome visitors to our islands find that the most delightful of activities are rooted in Malta’s blissful simplicity; being able to soak in the sun by well-kept, Blue Flag beaches. However, such weather lends itself beautifully towards a number of activities planned out against magnificent backdrops.
The Malta experience goes way beyond its spectacular beaches. Many visiting Malta during the summer period will forever carry with them memories of a Maltese village feast. Yet there are also countless moments when village spontaneity meets urban sophistication. Such are the evenings when the sound of music reverberates through the streets of the capital city, and bounces off street art in the baroque city, perhaps emanating from an open theatre,
perhaps as part of a jazz festival, or perhaps as part of an event that amalgamates science and the city life. Four thousand years of history come to life by means of reenactments in Mdina and the beautifully mysterious streets of Birgu are lit by candlelight during specifically organised events. There are occasions when fireworks become part of a large-scale, international festival, and other times when hundreds of choristers from around the world are brought to Malta in order to sing together in the heart of the Mediterranean. Food lovers often congregate to celebrate hearty recipes and genuine ingredients, during festivals that carry specific themes. There are bread festivals, for example, as well as events aimed at appreciating the Maltese olive, or strawberry delights for those with a sweet tooth.
There i also that time of the year when the scorching heat starts to subside and the summer bustle gives way to heart-warming events. The island of Gozo becomes a destination for fun and folly during carnival week in February, just after the serenity brought about by the real-life nativity scenes in December.
Whatever it is that you are looking for, you will probably find it in Malta. We hope this calendar serves as a point of reference and that your experience is unforgettable.

Il-Vitorja (Victory Day) commemorates three historic events, primarily the victory of the Knights of St John ending the Great Siege against the Turks in 1565, the rebellion against the French troops occupying Malta in September 1800, and the surrender of Italy in 1943. The regatta held in the Grand Harbour in the afternoon is the second major one of the year after the Freedom Day regatta races held on 31 March. St Paul is the patron saint of the Maltese Islands and so the feast of this saint is marked as an ‘obligatory feast’ in the liturgical calendar and a bank holiday. The feast is celebrated with great pomp in the church dedicated to the Shipwreck of St Paul in Valletta. According to the Acts of the Apos-tles, Chapters 27 and 28, in 60 A.D., St Paul was travelling to Rome from Jerusalem, when the vessel he was on ran aground off the coast of Malta. St Paul remained on the island for three months and according to tradition he converted the Maltese to Christianity. There are other localities on the Maltese islands where this saint is greatly revered. The feast of this saint is celebrated on other days in Rabat and Ħal Safi in Malta and Marsalforn in Gozo.
Malta enjoys 14 annual public holidays, the second most generous holiday provision in the EU, after Cyprus. These include five national holidays reflecting key dates in the island’s modern history, as well as seven Christian festivals plus New Year’s Day and Workers’ Day (1st May). All government offices, schools and most businesses are closed on these days. However, most bars and restaurants open as usual, while some convenience stores open for limited shopping hours.
The last of the British troops stationed on the island departed from Malta on this day in 1979, following a final run-down of the British military services. This marked a turning point in modern Maltese history when, following hundreds of years of foreign military occupation, the Maltese islands were now to follow their own destiny without the military presence of a foreign power. Activities commemorating this day are held every year in Vittoriosa where a monument marking this event was erected. In the afternoon, a hotly contested regatta takes place in the Grand Harbour featuring traditional watercraft manned by teams from cities bordering the Grand Harbour as well as another team from Birżebbuġa, a locality situated on Malta’s southern coast.

FREEDOM DAY (31st MARCH)

The day commemorates the victims of the 1919 riots when four Maltese men died in the violent unrest against the establishment. Many sectors of society were in Valletta on that day protesting against various political issues, including the high prices of commodities that made their living conditions unbearable.
This commemorates the day when in 1565 the armies of the Ottoman Em-pire lifted their siege on the harbour towns of Malta and their military units embarked on their vessels to return back to Istanbul. The Order of St John and the Maltese rejoiced at this lucky escape. The day is also celebrated to honour the Nativity of Our Lady which happens to be celebrated on the same day. It was believed that it was due to the intervention of the Madon-na that the siege was endured by the Maltese against such a gargantuan enemy.
In 1964 Malta obtained its independence from Great Britain. The first of the British administration in Malta had commenced in September of 1800 and in 1814 Malta became a British colony. Throughout this long occupa-tion, the island served as a very important naval base as well as a forward station for troops that were needed in case of military intervention in the Mediterranean Sea and beyond. After 1964 the Maltese Islands were im-mediately recognized by the United Nations as an independent state.
Having become an independent state within the Commonwealth 10 years earlier, Malta became a republic on 13th December 1974. The first Presi-dent of Malta, Sir Anthony Mamo replaced the last Governor General Sir Maurice Dorman. From now on Malta started to govern by its constitution-al laws according to the norms of a republican state.

The tradition of the Maltese carnival goes back hundreds of years, with records dating back to the 15th century. The Knights of St John and the Maltese always celebrated carnival together, as this was an important event that was tied to Ash Wednesday and therefore to the religious penitential days of Lent.
Carnival festivities are enjoyed in various towns and villages in Malta and Gozo. During the carnival period one can experience a lively and jovial mood where many young and not-so-young revellers wear all sorts of fanciful costumes. Many individual carnival floats are driven along the streets of Valletta and Floriana amongst a rowdy crowd. Carnival also lends itself to spontaneous merriment, allowing individuals to let their hair down, as the saying goes.
Arts Council Malta organises the official carnival festivities that generally take place in Valletta from Friday until Tuesday. In Gozo carnival is celebrated in various ways, both in Rabat (Victoria) as well as in the village of Nadur. Here a more bizarre carnival fête takes place on Saturday evening that lasts until the early hours of the following day.
CARNIVAL

Easter is the most important feast in the Christian liturgical calendar. The series of religious and traditional manifestations of this commemoration are still very much alive in the Maltese islands. Holy Week officially begins with Palm Sunday, to commemorate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On the evening of Maundy Thursday, the Last Supper is commemorated during Mass when twelve persons from each locality take part in the symbolic washing of the feet. After mass, churches are stripped of their silver and damask in sign of mourning and thousands of people visit seven churches to pay their respects at the Altar of Repose. The incense infused altar is beautifully decorated with white flowers and vetch plants. That same evening many also visit the displays of miniature statues representing the Passion of Christ before His crucifixion. The next day, Good Friday, is a public holiday. Late in the afternoon, at around 5.30 pm, numerous churches in Malta and Gozo hold Good Friday processions, featuring numerous life size statues carried by pall bearers and dozens of actors who dress up as biblical characters and Roman soldiers. Some participants wear hooded cloaks and tow chains around their feet as they walk in the procession. Good Friday processions are held in these towns:Birgu (St Lawrence parish church) – Senglea – Cospicua – Naxxar – Mosta – Ħal Luqa – Rabat (Fransiscan Minors Church) – Paola – Valletta (Ta’ Ġieżu Church) – Żejtun – Ħal Qormi (St George’s Parish Church) – Żebbuġ. Three processions are held on Palm Sunday, one in Ħal Għargħur, one in Ħal Għaxaq and the third one from either one of the parish churches in Victoria, Gozo. In Gozo, on Good Friday, four processions are held: one in Victoria Rabat (either one from the two parishes, that is St George Basilica or The Assumption Cathedral); the others are held in Nadur, Xagħra and Żebbuġ. In contrast to the sombre mood of Good Friday, Easter Sunday’s jubilant celebrations are punctuated by the pealing of joyful bells and fireworks. The feast is known in Maltese as Kristu Rxoxt (the Risen Christ). Following exuberant processions in the streets with the statue of the Risen Christ, families gather to enjoy a rich Easter Sunday lunch, typically of lamb, followed by traditional figolli almond pastries.
GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER
76
The Maltese have great reverence towards the Holy Mother. Many churches are dedicated to her under various titles, the most popular being the Assumption of Our Lady. This recalls the dogma stated by Pope Pius XII in 1950 that established the Holy Virgin as being received in Heaven as body and soul. Thus the feast became an ‘obligatory’ one in the Catholic world and is celebrated on 15th August. The feast is celebrated in nine localities in Malta and Gozo, namely: Mosta, Ħal Għaxaq, Gudja, Mqabba, Qrendi, Ħ’Attard and Rabat in Gozo. The villages of Mġarr (Malta) and Ħad-Dingli celebrate the same feast on the Sunday immediately following that date.
Named after the Latin word luminare, meaning ‘to light up’, this is one of Malta’s oldest feasts dating back to the time of the Knights of St John, when bonfires were lit up on the city walls of Mdina during the night between 28th and 29th June. Commemorating St Peter and St Paul, the celebrations centre around the town of Rabat just outside Mdina. In the afternoon of 29th June horse races are held in the country lane, situated just below Rabat. An agricultural show takes place at Buskett Grove where traditional rabbit dishes are served amid much music and merriment. In Nadur, Gozo, the feast of St Peter and St Paul is celebrated over three days. Here the feast follows the more traditional village festa with band marches, fireworks and processions of the statue of the two saints carried at shoulder-height.

The birth of Jesus is known in Maltese as il-Milied a celebration which the Maltese look forward to with great enthusiasm. The streets of many localities are decorated with festive lights while families get creative with their own decorations in and outside their homes. On Christmas Eve, members of the Society of Catholic Doctrine lead processions of children accompanying the small statue of Baby Jesus through the streets of the town. A small brass band accompanies the procession and children sing carols such as Ninni la Tibkix Izjed (1864), (Sleep, cry no longer) and Ninu Ninu tal-Milied. (Child, Child of Christmas). That night churches are packed for Midnight Mass where a child delivers the so called Christmas sermon. Following Mass, some opt for an early ‘breakfast’ in one of the cafeterias that remain open all night. Apart from the ubiquitous Christmas trees, many families set up their own Christmas Nativity Crib at home. Some of these Nativity Scenes are rather elaborate and are even open to the public to visit. Look out for signs saying Wirja tal-Presepju (Crib Display) or even Presepju Ħaj (Live Crib) featuring re-enactors in full period costume.
