THE MAKINGOF MODERNAFRICAN CITIES
14-17 OCT 2018
CTICC 2 CAPE TOWN
CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
CONFERENCE PROGRAMMEPLANNING AFRICA 2018
Welcome to the 8th Planning Africa Conference, SAPI’s flagship programme to facilitate knowledge
exchange, share ideas and showcase practice across the planning fraternity. Planning Africa provides a
unique opportunity to gather and reflect on our journey as organised professionals contributing to urban
and rural development and spatial transformation.
I am proud to announce that Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points as designated by
SACPLAN will be awarded to delegates, presenters, reviewers and authors for this conference and for future
conferences.
Planning Africa is not just a conference, but a set of events and activities that help to knit the planning and
built environment community to act, to adopt new approaches and, to keep abreast with latest
developments in planning.
On the 14 October 2018 SAPI hosted an international planning side event, the Commonwealth Association
of Planners (CAP) Business Meeting. At the same time SAPI also arranged a Young Planners Colloquium
with the help of the Planning Schools who were requested to focus on the theme and sub themes of
conference in their studios and classes in the first semester of 2018. South African young planners
converged and presented their ideas about the future, which is on display at conference. SAPI young
planners, through these events, forged links with the CAP Young Planners Network.
The host province and co-host municipalities are sincerely thanked for the eorts made in supporting
conference, for hosting planning related tours for delegates as both pre-conference and post-conference
events, and for supporting the welcome cocktail and gala dinner events.
Conference was realised with our generous sponsors: GIZ, SALGA, Department of Rural Development and
Land Reform who recognise the importance of a non-political, non-partisan, independent platform to
deliberate policy and implementation that SAPI creates every two years. Our host and co-hosts and SAPI
members in private practice made special contributions in sponsorship, services and in-kind contributions.
The theme of conference “The Making of Modern African Cities” attracted over 200 authors submitting 186
papers. 52 papers were finally selected for presentation at conference. On this programme 49 due to
withdrawals. The threading of the Planning Africa Conference Programme commenced in February 2017
with the theme being set. In July 2017 the call papers and the website went public. Ideas and views on the
theme and sub themes from close to 300 people including authors, SAPI leaders and fraternal organisation
formed the basis of shaping the programme. The programme was designed, debated and constructed over
eighteen (18) months.
A special welcome to the African delegates and International delegates, we hope to see you in future
Planning Africa conferences.
Thank you to all delegates, authors, speakers, presenters and volunteers without you conference would not
be possible.
Nthato MinyukuSAPI President
