Leadership within the 21st Century
As we enter the 21st century there is a growing awareness of the importance and need for effective leadership. Focusing on the following areas can increase the successfulness of leadership.
Vision Mission Values Commitment Motivation Consensus among everyone
THEORY OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP
Blanchard states that the leadership style of the leader must correspond to the development level of the follower. It is the leader who must adapt, not the follower. To be an effective leader, a leader should be trained in how to operate effectively in various leadership styles, and how to determine the development level of others.
Blanchard's 3 Keys To Empowerment
“share information with everyone” “create autonomy through boundaries” “let teams become the hierarchy”
Situational Leadership
S1 - Leader directs/supervises follower
S2 - Leader assigns tasks, asks for ideas/suggestions of follower
S3 - Leader hands over regular
decisions to follower
S4 - Leader gives total control to follower
D1 - Follower has low competence/highly committed
D2 - Follower has some competence/low commitment
D3 - Follower controls processes – competent/needs motivation
D4 - Follower decides when/how leader is involved – competent/committed
An effective leader knows how to handle any situation to develop a follower
