The sight of a new elementary schoolunder construction would seem to be acause for celebration.
But, even when students can attend anew school, and even when the new schoolwill reduce crowding at other area schools, the prospect of boundary changes for exist-ing schools is often fraught withcontroversy.
“Folks don’t want to move. I can under-stand. Folks are loyal to their school,” saidChris Williams, director of planning forPasco County Schools.
Elementary W, being built off MansfieldBoulevard in Wesley Chapel, is slated toopen in August 2016.
It will affect the current boundaries forSeven Oaks, Double Branch, Sand Pine and
Denham Oaks elementary schools — if thePasco County School Board approves a planrecommended by a school boundary com-mittee.

Sarah Russell took horse-riding lessonswhen she was 4.
At age 7, she got her first AmericanSaddlebred.
By the time she was 15, she was a worldchampion equestrian.
“It’s just my passion,” Russell said. Now, it’s her business as well.Russell opened Sarah Russell Stables Oct.
1, with a 24-stall barn, covered arena and ahalf-dozen training horses. She lives on theproperty, located at 29319 Hadlock Drive inWesley Chapel, with her husband, Ross, andson, Kellan.
They’ll host a free Fall Festival event onNov. 29 to serve as an open house of sorts, and introduce the business to the community.
Russell has worked in stables locally, andin places like Kentucky.
The 29-year-old has spent her life com-peting and caring for horses, and hasnoticed the good and bad characteristics ofvarious stables.
She has taken the best of her experi-ences and put them into one Wesley Chapelbusiness.
“I think the Wesley Chapel area is reallyan untapped market for our business. It’ssuch a growing and booming town, it was agreat opportunity to start something like (anew stable) there.”
Russell has taken advantage of the op-
portunity by offering riding lessons for alllevels of riders. She specializes in saddleseattraining, a challenging discipline which re-quires riders to handle a double bridlewhen guiding their horse. As a competitiverider, Russell claimed multiple national andworld championships, and memorabilia ofher titles are displayed at her business.
But, you don’t have to be an aspiringworld champion to get something out ofhorse riding, she said. She’s taught adultswho had never been on a horse, and theycame away with a new passion and pastime.
One adult student wentfrom never riding before toowning three horses.
While grownups canenjoy valuable experiencesby riding, children andyoung adults learn lessonsthat stay with them whenthey’re out of the saddle.
“It’s such a commit-ment. It teaches youdedication, and determina-tion and hard work,”Russell said. “You learn todevelop a connection be-tween you and your horsewhich is so good for somany other aspects of life.”
The stalls are already fill-ing up with students whoboard their horses there,
and Russell keeps the training up evenwhen the owners aren’t around. The stu-dents still come by frequently to bond withtheir horse, she said.
Russell and her husband are originallyfrom Michigan. When they moved to thearea, they lived in a more traditional subdivi-sion.
But, that wasn’t the life she wanted, andhaving her own business on 18 acres suitsher much better.
Her husband is a veterinarian whose of-fice also is on the property, and Kellan, while only 2, already enjoys being aroundand sitting on horses.
In a couple of years, he’ll be his mother’sage when she started taking lessons, andRussell believes he’ll take to it like she did.
Owning a stable isn’t easy, Russell ad-mits.
While she already has clients whosehorses get trained on a daily basis, there’sstill a lot of work to do less than twomonths into her new career.
“It’s a lot of work. It’s a big undertakingand a huge commitment, but it’s what I’ve al-ways wanted to do, so it’s a great thing,” shesaid. “It’s totally worth it. Every minute of it.”
The Fall Festival will run from noon until4 p.m. It will include local vendors, facepainting, a bounce house and pony rides. For information about the festival or the sta-bles, contact Russell at (810) 955-5023 [email protected].

The Pasco County Clerk &Comptroller’s Office is now offering resi-dents a free app that will help protectagainst property fraud.
The app seeks to take aim at what theFederal Bureau of Investigation reports asthe fastest-growing, white-collar crime inthe nation.
The Pasco County Clerk &Comptroller’s Office is offering residentsthe app to help them monitor documentssuch as deeds, wills and liens filed withPasco County.
Pinellas, Polk and Palm Harbor countieshave launched similar preventative pro-grams during the past year, using up-to-datesocial media technology.
Since launching the app in September, nearly 110 people have registered for theprogram in Pasco, said Pasco County Clerk
& Comptroller Paula O’Neil. As of last week, four alerts had been
sent out, though no one had yet reportedany fraudulent activity.
The app is an early warning system thatworks in the same way a credit card alertprogram does, O’Neil explained.
While alerts don’t automatically meansomething is wrong, people will know ifthey need to question an activity, she said.
“It lets them know if something iswrong,” said O’Neil. “There are no fees forany of it.”
Residents or business owners can go
online to register the name or names to bemonitored. They choose a notificationmethod including by email or phone.
Alerts go out when a document isrecorded with the registered name ornames. Property owners can verifywhether they initiated the activity.
A typical fraud might include filing aforged deed that records a new owner, andthen taking out a mortgage on the proper-ty. Such activity, in some cases, could goundetected until the true owner refinancedor sold the property.
O’Neil said the app also could protectpeople from phone scammers who illicitpersonal information later used to file falsedocuments.
If fraud is suspected, law enforcementor another appropriate agency can be con-tacted for follow up.
To register call (800) 747-4600, or visitwww.pascoclerk.com and go to the linkfor “property fraud alert service.”

Nearly 80,000 Pasco County residentscommute daily to jobs in neighboring coun-ties, clogging the highways north and southwith cars. But, CSX Florida could be onboard to ease those traffic jams with a fu-ture commuter rail line chugging throughthe heart of Land O’ Lakes.
CSX officials are putting 96 miles of rail-road tracks, from two separate rail lines, onthe market. The tracks are lightly used forhauling freight, but could become availablefor passenger service.
One line would link downtown St.Petersburg with downtown Clearwater, head to Oldsmar, the Tampa InternationalAirport and terminate in Ybor City.
The second line would start at theUniversity of South Florida, follow along U.S.41 through Land O’ Lakes, and end nearBrooksville in Hernando County.
Since the 1990s, efforts to start sometype of commuter or light rail service havegone nowhere. But, with CSX in play as apotential partner in a regional agreement, supporters say this time could be different.
The Florida Department ofTransportation could play a major role inthe project in partnership with CSX.
“I think there is momentum,” said JamesEdwards, Pasco County’s transportationmanager.
The vision for a regional commuter lineoperating in Hillsborough, Pinellas andPasco counties is gaining traction from a re-gional advisory group, the Tampa BayManagement Area Leadership Group (TMA).
The organization is composed of repre-sentatives of the Metropolitan PlanningOrganizations from all three Tampa Baycounties.
On Nov. 12, Pasco County MPO got abriefing on the proposal. A few days earlier,Bob O’Malley, vice president of CSX Florida, had made a presentation to TMA.
A commuter rail system should not beconfused with light rail. Commuter trainsgenerally operate in more suburban areaswith heavier train cars at higher speeds andmore passenger volume than light rail. Lightrail is better able to navigate urban streetswith lighter-weight cars, quicker starts andstops, and fewer passengers.
Still, the proposal is preliminary. There aremany unanswered questions — includingcosts, funding sources, the role of the MPOs,and who would operate the rail system.
Edwards said he hoped to bring some of
those answers back to the Pasco MPO at itsDec. 10 meeting.
One model for Tampa Bay would be theSunrail, a commuter system operating in theOrlando area.
CSX agreed to sell 61 miles of tracks forSunrail. Total cost estimates were about $1billion including land costs, track upgrades, rail car purchases and station construction.About 30 miles are operating now betweenOrlando and Winter Park. Another 30 milesis planned into Osceola County as well as alink to Orlando International Airport.
“We’re kind of mimicking their approachto this, but it is going to take some effort,”Edwards said.
The county’s high growth area now iscentered along State Road 54 and StateRoad 56 where the Tampa Premium Outletsrecently opened.
But, the intersection of State Road 54 andU.S. 41 also is set to boom as more master-planned communities, retail, hotel andoffices are either under construction orready to turn dirt.
Bexley Ranch, off State Road 54 in LandO’ Lakes, is a prime example of what is tocome, said Pasco County Commissioner JackMariano.
The property, recently divided intoBexley North and Bexley South, falls northand south of Tower Road. It extends east toSuncoast Parkway and the CSX corridor.
As much as 1 million square feet of of-fices could be built there, Mariano said.
“Try to imagine if we put a rail stopthere. It would be a huge economic boon ifyou look at that area,” he said.
Commuter trains could be comingdown the railroad tracks

Tampa Bay Lightning launches regional partnership
By B.C. [email protected]
The 2016-2017 school year will ring inearlier for students in Pasco andHillsborough counties.
Students in Pasco County will begin nextschool year on Aug. 15 and will finish it onMay 26.
The Pasco County School Board ap-
proved the new calendar without discus-sion.
“The purpose for the earlier start date isto allow secondary students to complete se-mester exams before winter break,”according to Linda Cobbe, the Pasco Countyschool district’s spokeswoman.
“It also lets us end the school year beforeJune,” she noted.
The adopted calendar has six fewer days
in the first semester than in the second se-mester.
The third quarter has the most days, andthe others all have roughly the same num-ber of days.
Kenny Blankenship, president of theUnited School Employees of Pasco, said hethinks students do benefit from havingthe opportunity to take their semesterexams and end of course exams before
the winter holidays. This school year, the end of the first se-
mester in Pasco County is Jan. 14. Nextschool year, it will be Dec. 22.
Students’ first day of school inHillsborough County next school year isAug. 10. The district’s first semester will endon Dec. 16.
The last day in Hillsborough County forstudents will be May 26, 2017.
School year starts sooner for local students

A $6 million initiative to expand thegame of hockey regionally in Tampa Bay isbeginning to play out in local schools.
The Tampa Bay Lightning, the NationalHockey League and the National HockeyLeague Players’ Association are collaboratingon a five-year program that aims to develophockey players and provide life skills les-sons to area youth.
As part of that initiative, schools through-out the region are beginning to have streethockey clinics to teach children about thegame.
Pasco County plans to offer the programto all of the district’s fourth- and fifth-graders, said Amy Lipovetsky, programcoordinator for kindergarten through 12thgrade physical education.
The school district was approached byTampa Bay Lightning and was glad to partic-ipate, she said.
“It fits nicely with our standards in thephysical education program,” Lipovetskysaid.
There is a standard that calls for beingable to strike with an implement, which youcan do with a hockey stick.
“I know the teachers are excited, and thekids like something different,” saidLipovetsky, who also oversees Pasco’s athlet-ic programs.
The Lightning plans to provide the streethockey clinics at 500 schools throughout
the region.“This semester they had openings for
maybe 10 of our schools. And, we’re goingto open up next semester for any remainingspots that they have,” Lipovetsky said.
Additional schools will participate asopenings become available, she said.
When the clinics are held at a school, theLightning sends in about five staff membersto teach the game to the school’s fourth-and fifth-graders.
They come in for a day, and they workwith all of our fourth- and fifth-graders.Generally, that takes five to six sessions.
“We want it to be effective. We don’t
want any more than 60 kids out at one time,so that they can get the most out of theevent,” Lipovetsky said.
Some former Lightning players are in-volved, and the school district’s physicaleducation teachers are involved, too, she said.
“The cool thing is that each of these kidsgets to walk away with a hockey stick and avoucher (for a game).”
The program is going an additional stepat Sanders Memorial Elementary STEAMMagnet School, the district’s only magnetschool.
Sanders students will learn about theconcepts of geometric constructions, ener-
gy and force — through a computer gameon the sport of hockey.
Schools that have participated in thestreet hockey clinics so far include ChesterTaylor and San Antonio elementary schools.
Besides Sanders, other area Pasco schoolsscheduled to have clinics this semester areSeven Oaks Elementary in Wesley Chapeland Denham Oaks in Lutz.
The street hockey clinics also take placein other Tampa Bay area schools, includingschools in Hillsborough County.
When it opens, Florida Hospital CenterIce also is expected to play a role in the ini-tiative.

“Why didn’t I come to you first?”That’s a commonly uttered question at
our Pasco County Extension office, whenhomeowners come in with landscape prob-lems.
Usually, this question is preempted by a“put the right plant in the right place” dis-cussion.
This Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM(FFL) principle is simple to grasp, but notobvious until someone puts it in plainEnglish by saying “you didn’t put the rightplant in the right place.”
It’s often an “ah ha” moment for folksthat’s followed by remorse.
Most landscape woes can be preventedby simply doing a bit of homework to deter-mine if a particular plant will be happy in aparticular spot in the yard.
One of the more common issues leadingto landscape remorse is the urge to use turf-grasses in shady locations.
We do not have any turfgrasses forCentral Florida that are adapted to shade. St.Augustine grass and Bahigrass, the mostcommon in our home lawns, need at leastfive hours to six hours of full sun daily tothrive; anything less leads to a weak plant.Remember the first principle of FFL – turfin a shady spot is putting the “wrong plantin the wrong place!”
No matter how many times you sod orseed that same area, lack of sunlight willlimit vigor and have the same result everysingle time – remorse.
But, there’s good news – better yet, greatnews! There are alternatives to turfgrass inshady locations.
Groundcovers are an excellent optionfor shady spaces.
A groundcover is a low-growing plantused to cover areas where grass can’t growor isn’t preferred, such as a shady spot.
Groundcovers not only cover bare soil;they also can be beautiful focal points andeven provide a more functional use of thelandscape, such as redirecting foot traffic.
Groundcovers also serve as practicallawn alternatives with many benefits.
One advantage is the ability to use themin areas where mowing isn’t easy — espe-cially where there are narrow strips of soilalong sidewalks, driveways or walls.
Groundcovers also help prevent soil ero-sion on slopes.
The right groundcover in the right placecan lower maintenance costs, reduce
weeds, provide color during winter months, and reduce overall landscape maintenance.
There are several considerations to keepin mind when selecting a groundcover, suchas: plant type (evergreen, flowering plant, vine, shrub, etc.), growing conditions andmaintenance.
Select a plant type that will satisfy yourneeds and aesthetic desire. Ornamentalgrasses, vines, flowering plants, and smallshrubs all can serve as groundcovers.
Like other plants, sunlight needs forgroundcovers can vary.
For example, if you need a low growing, spreading groundcover where there’s plen-ty of sunlight, select shore juniper or dwarfyaupon holly. These are handy in areaswhere you need to direct foot traffic.
The beach morning glory and the beachsunflower can provide a nice pop of colorin sunny spots and even attract butterflies.
Perennial peanut does great in full sunand provides excellent contrasting colorsand textures.
Our native coontie is a nice addition infull sun or shade along with brightly col-ored daylilies, which produce a nice focalpoint or dramatic effect in the landscape.
Another plant that does well in partialshade or full sun is the purple queen, whichproduces small, pink flowers and succulentstems.
In partial shade, choose Mondo grass orLiriope, aloe plants, false heather, or DwarfAsiatic jasmine. Asiatic jasmine does have atendency to “creep and leap,” so be pre-pared to do some frequent maintenance tokeep it from overtaking other plants and
sidewalks. In dense shade, choose hollyfern, cast iron plant, or Algerian ivy for acontrast in texture and color.
Arrangement and spacing will dependon the growth patterns for each of theseplants. In general, staggered row plantingswill provide the quickest coverage, and a 2-inch to 3-inch layer of mulch will helpreduce weeds and will lock in moisture.
Some groundcovers can be planted 2inches to 3 inches apart, while others needmore room, some requiring 3 feet to 4 feet ofspace between plants, like the native coontie.
Spacing depends on the plant itself, soplan to do a little research to be sure of yourdesired plant needs prior to purchase.
Water and fertilizer needs also dependon the plant type, so do your homework onthat, as well.
You can plant most any of these ground-covers anytime in our area, but do plan toadd organic matter to the soil prior to plant-ing, which helps increase water holdingcapacity and nutrient availability.
You can use compost, peat moss, andeven well-rotted manures incorporated intothe soil 6 inches to 12 inches deep.
Once established, most groundcoverswill be low-maintenance, long-term, grief-free additions to your landscape.
For more information about ground cov-ers, call the University of Florida Institute ofFood and Agricultural Sciences PascoExtension Office at (352) 518-0156.

Residents loaded up their cars and truckswith hazardous wastes and headed to theWest Pasco Government Center to tossthem out.
They brought half-empty cans of paint, dead AA batteries and outdated televisions, and other stuff that’s not easy to dispose.
County employees lined up on Oct. 24 toaccept waste in what Charles Ryburn be-lieves was the largest “mobile collection”haul in the five years he has served as PascoCounty’s environmental and hazardous man-ager.
Over four hours, nearly 620 vehiclesdrove into the government center in NewPort Richey.
County solid waste employees collected26,500 pounds of latex paint, 4,775 pounds
of household chemicals, 350 pounds of bat-teries, 320 gallons of used oil, antifreeze orgasoline, and 350 light fixtures filled withmercury.
All totaled, more than 22,000 pounds ofelectronics, including televisions, werebrought to the center.
Employees secured the waste and deliv-ered it to the county’s West Pasco ResourceRecovery Center, at 14606 Hays Road, inSpring Hill.
Based on telephone calls from residentsprior to collection day, Ryburn said residentswho participated in the collection day camefrom all over Pasco County.
“We’re hoping to eventually, if we cangather all the resources we need, to do oneon the east side of the county and one onthe west side of the county each year,”Ryburn said.
A similar event took place at ZephyrhillsHigh School last year. Rainfalldampened that turnout, coun-ty officials said.
Still, Ryburn said sites inZephyrhills or Dade City, possi-bly at a high school, could beconsidered for future mobilecollections.
“Schools work well withus,” Ryburn said. “We reallywant to do this on each sideof the county.”
Special collection daysaren’t the only way to disposeof hazardous waste.
Residents can drop offhazardous waste during anycounty work day at the WestPasco site on Hays Road, or atthe East Pasco Transfer Stationat 9626 Handcart Road inDade City.
For information, call (813)929-2755, ext. 6898.
Residents deliver hazardous waste for recycling
Those who are interested in learning moreor weighing in on the proposed boundariesare invited to attend a community meeting setfor Nov. 19 at 6 p.m., at Denham OaksElementary, 1422 Oak Grove Blvd., in Lutz.
The proposed boundaries aim to reducecrowding and leave room for future growth inschools expected to experience the largest en-rollment increases over the next few years,Williams said.
Under the proposal, students would beshifted out of Double Branch Elementary andSand Pine Elementary into the newElementary W, Williams said.
Then, some students from Seven Oaks
would be assigned to Sand Pine, and othersfrom Seven Oaks would be assigned toDenham Oaks, Williams said.
“Part of the rationale is that we don’t wantto shift a whole huge amount of kids to SandPine and have to move a bunch of portablesover there,” Williams explained.
“Denham Oaks has quite a bit of roomnow,” he added.
The boundary committee’s proposal is fac-ing resistance, Williams said.
Although Williams was out of town recent-ly, he said he’s heard that “the biggestopposition is coming from the Arbor Woodsgroup. They’re the newest phase of theNorthwood development. They don’t want tobe zoned into Denham Oaks.”
Opponents would prefer to stay at Seven
Oaks Elementary or move to Sand PineElementary, he said.
“Part of their rationale is that Denham Oaksis a lower-graded school. They’re concernedabout that,” Williams said.
Opponents also are concerned about traf-fic through the interchange of State Road 56and Interstate 75, especially with the recentopening of Tampa Premium Outlets, Williamssaid.
However, the committee has taken a lookat the traffic issue, Williams said.
“They certainly have the ability to go downto County Line (Road) and traverse CountyLine (Road). By our measurement, so far, thedrive times to get to Denham Oaks(Elementary School) from that area are not asbad as they made it out to be,” Williams said.
There’s no question that Seven OaksElementary needs relief, the planning directorsaid.
“The car line at Seven Oaks is just madnessbecause of how many kids we have there,” hesaid. “We just can’t continue to have that manykids at Seven Oaks Elementary.”
In addition to the upcoming communitymeeting, the public also can weigh in at twopublic hearings before the Pasco CountySchool Board.
The first public hearing will be during theboard’s 9:30 a.m. meeting on Dec. 1, and thesecond public hearing will be during theboard’s 6 p.m. meeting on Dec. 15. The boardmeets at in the school district complex,Building No. 3 North, at 7205 Land O’ LakesBlvd., in Land O’ Lakes.

Saint Leo’s cross-country team heads to nationals
Sources: MaxPreps, various
By Michael [email protected]
When Saint Leo University’s men’s cross-country team qualified for nationals, coachKent Reiber was quick to do what success-ful coaches do: Spread the credit around.
“We have a really good coaching staffhere, and everybody plays a part in makingthe program work together,” Reiber said. “It’sjust about putting the right training togeth-er with the right athletes.”
But, that doesn’t tell the entire story. It’s about the right coach as well. This is Reiber’s first year as head coach
after being on staff since 2011. It’s also thefirst year the team captured a regional title.
After making nationals the previous twoyears, the Lions will enter the 10K race onNov. 21 in Joplin, Missouri, this year asNCAA Division II South Region champions.
While he won’t take much credit forhimself (Reiber was also named bothSunshine State Conference and SouthRegion coach of the year), he does admit tohaving a specific coaching style.
“My belief is running for the team. Withour sport, it’s hard to have that team atmos-phere, but I really encourage our kids to runfor each other and find that reason withinthe team to run,” he said.
That team spirit can affect the results onthe course, Reiber said. If a runner passes ateammate, they’re encouraged to pull themto their faster level so Saint Leo can runmore as a pack. And, when a pack runs upto and past an opponent, it can be mentallyintimidating to the competition.
That philosophy also means running less
during the week than other programs. Whilesome schools have their runners put in 100miles or more each week, Saint Leo prefersa more-targeted running schedule to keepeveryone focused.
“We’re more of a program where we doa lot more quality as opposed to quantity, sowe tend not to have many of our runnersrunning the high mileage. We stick to alower mileage, but we make those shorterruns a little more quality based, and just put-ting in the right workouts at the right time,”Reiber said.
Saint Leo’s team trip to nationals is even
more impressive, considering the entireteam didn’t finish the race at the regionalchampionship.
Junior Rafal Matuszczak, one of theteam’s top runners, fell and was unable tofinish the race due to the heat. Normally, that would grant the title to another teamwith a full complement of finishers, but theLions’ other runners stepped up and fin-ished fast enough to garner the lowest score(a lower score is better in cross country). Asa result, they edged past Lee University forthe school’s first regional crown.
They’ll have their full slate of runners for
Missouri (Matuszczak is expected to be readyfor nationals), but they won’t have home-field advantage they enjoyed at regionals.
That competition was at Saint Leo thisyear, and the race was at The Abbey, the uni-versity’s golf course.
Hundreds came to show their support, and their cheers and excitement made a dif-ference to the athletes, Reiber said.
“It’s a huge confidence booster, beingable to run a race on your home course andknow that the people who are cheering arecheering for you,” the coach said. “It kind ofgives you a little more motivation to pushwhen you’re not feeling so good, or passone more person at the end.”
Still, he feels that his teams can accom-plish a lot in Missouri.
Besides coaching the men’s cross-coun-try team, Reiber also coaches the women’scross-country team, and they also qualifiedfor their national tournament. They finishedsecond in their regional competition andare headed to the national competition, too.
If things go their way, his teams have ashot at top-15 finishes in the country, hesaid.
While the Lions are looking forward andworking hard toward a good showing at na-tionals, Reiber acknowledged that theschool’s first regional title is an impressiveaccomplishment for the men’s cross coun-try squad, and their first-year coach.
“Words can barely describe the feeling Ihad after finding out that we won the re-gional title,” Reiber said. “The regional titlekind of solidifies everything that we’ve beendoing and all the hard work we’ve been put-ting in.”
PHOTO COURTESY OF ERIN SKOCZYLASFrom left, Anthony Deleva, Carl Dunne, Niclas Bez, Joe Marrah, Valentin Lenz and Joe Fullercelebrate their regional victory. They’ll travel to Missouri for the Nov. 21 national competition.
Under coach Kim Whitney, the Pasco-Hernando State College Lady Quistashave always qualified for their regionaltournament.
Now, getting past that tournament andgoing to nationals is becoming a regularevent, too.
PHSC (19-11) will head to PhoenixCollege in Arizona for the NJCAA Division
II National Tournament that begins Nov.19. They qualified for the second straightyear (and sixth time under Whitney’stenure) after taking the regional tourna-ment in North Carolina Nov. 6 and Nov. 7.
The Lady Quistas will be seeded 11th,but their competition shouldn’t discountthem. The team won the national champi-onship under Whitney in 2010.

When Nick Hall set out tomake a bicycle trek acrossthe country, he focusedon a single goal: To inspire
others to join him in the quest to conquerpolio.
It was a 3,000-mile ride that would takeHall up steep mountain passes, throughstretches of desert, and along interstatehighways and down narrow roads.
He’d sleep in a tent on the side of theroad, or in abandoned buildings, or behindtruck stops.
He’d wash his change of clothes in sinksat truck stops or convenience stores.
Hall began his cross-country trek on July14 by placing the rear wheel of his bicycletire in the Pacific Ocean.
He finished his journey — surroundedby family, friends and supporters — on Aug.15 in St. Augustine.
Along the way, he shared the Rotary ClubInternational’s quest to eradicate polio fromthe face of the planet.
While he was out on the road, Hall said, his grandson asked how one man riding abicycle could help put an end to polio.
Hall’s wife told the boy that as the cyclistmet people along the way, they’d want toknow his story, and after they heard it,they’d share it.
Ironically, Hall said, this is much the sameway an infectious disease — such as polio—is spread. One person has contact withanother person, who in turn has contactwith others.
As Hall made his way across the country,Facebook posts chronicled his journey, anddonations came in to battle polio from peo-ple in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and,as far away as South Dakota.
The ride is over, but Hall is still sharinghis story. He recently talked about his adven-tures at a noon luncheon meeting of theWesley Chapel Rotary Club.
“I never had a goal of covering a certainnumber of miles, nor getting to a certaindestination by a certain time,” Hall said. There were too many variables beyond hiscontrol, he explained.
He had no power over the direction ofthe winds, he said, and didn’t know if he’dencounter a hurricane, or when his bicyclewould need a repair.
“And so, my goal was only ever to keepthe bike moving 10 hours a day,” Hall said.
Hall figured he had an average of 15
A cross-country mission to battle polio
hours of sunlight a day, leaving plenty oftime for breaks, which he took during thehottest parts of the day.
And, it was hot.“The bank sign in Blythe, California, on
the edge of Death Valley, registered 115 de-grees. And, for 10 consecutive days, the highnever got below 100.”
His longest ride on a single day was 150miles; his shortest, was under 70.
“My day would begin at usually a half-hour before sunrise. I would set my alarm togo off, because I didn’t want to miss aminute of the cooler temperatures beforethe sun really got blisteringly hot,” he said.
“I’d have a Fig Newton. I’d stop at a gro-cery store — buy a box, just to take theedge off my appetite. I didn’t want to wastetime eating a full breakfast, not when it wasthe coolest part of the day.
“I’d wait three or four hours before stop-ping, and then would eat a couple of friedeggs, fried ham, hash browns, toast.Sometimes extra servings of the hashbrowns,” he said.
Around mid-morning, he’d stop for oneof his favorite snacks: A paper-wrappedHostess Apple Pie.
It was 780 calories, and it was awesome,he said.
“I was losing a lot of electrolytes. Whytake salt pills when you can eat potatochips? Or, salted peanuts?
“And then, I would have a couple of ice
cream bars in the late afternoon.“You know there’s not much pleasure cy-
cling across West Texas — a barren landscape, resembling the landscape of the moon.
“And, there’s a need. We all need pleas-ure,” he said.
So, he indulged in foods that gave himpleasure and also helped him maintain hisweight, as he was burning around 4,000calories a day.
Hall rode through all kinds of conditions. He traveled on Interstate 10 through
parts of Arizona and Texas.Riding on an interstate sounds haz-
ardous, he said, but it was actually safer thansome of the other roads he took.
“Compare I-10, with a speed limit of 70miles per hour, with a road I was on in
Louisiana — two-lane road, speed limit 70miles an hour. No shoulder.
“There were multiple times when biglogging trucks would whiz by. They couldn’tpull over very far, because there was oncom-ing traffic.
“I had multiple, ‘Oh, fecal matter’ mo-ments,” he said.
His worst mishap occurred on the morn-ing of July 26, as he cycling on I-10 in WestTexas.
He was coming down a mountain pass ata decent clip.
“All of a sudden, I heard this horrible, metallic, crunching sound,” he said. “Thebike came to a shuddering stop. I did not. Ikept going.
“I’d run over a 6-inch bolt,” said Hall, whoscraped his face and knee but didn’t breakany bones.
The bolt hit the front tire, and the bikewas missing spokes, had broken spokes andhad a bent fork.
A truck driver gave Hall a lift to SanAntonio, Texas, for bike repairs, and Hall wasback on the road two days later.
Hall said the best moment on his tripcame when he arrived in Palatka.
At that point, he knew he was ahead ofschedule. He knew he wouldn’t need towash his clothes in a convenience store sink,or need to scout out a safe place to sleep.
He said he had the satisfaction, too, ofknowing people he’d met along his journeyhad contributed donations to help eradicatepolio from the planet.
Nick Hall routinely washed his clothes insinks at convenience stores and truckstops, so he could limit the amount ofweight he was carrying during his trip.
This map shows the route that Nick Hall followed during the second leg in his cross-country bicycle journey to help put an end to polio.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF NICK HALLNick Hall climbed steep mountain passes during a 3,000 trek aimed at raise awareness about the quest to conquer polio, and to raise moneyto help purchase vaccines to help eradicate the disease.

INTERNATIONAL AWARDThe Pasco Economic Development
Council received a Bronze Excellence inEconomic Development Award for BusinessRetention & Expansion-Single Event at thisyear’s International Economic DevelopmentCouncil Annual Conference.
The award honors the combined effortsof Pasco EDC with community partners, in-cluding Pasco County, New Port Richey, andDuke Energy, to keep Applicant Insight inNew Port Richey. The company is the city’slargest employer.
“This award serves as a salute to paceset-ting organizations like the Pasco EconomicDevelopment Council for leading thecharge,” said JoAnn Carary, in a press releasefrom Pasco EDC. Carary is chairwoman ofInternational Economic DevelopmentCouncil (IEDC) and president of SaginawFuture Inc.
The IEDC is a nonprofit membership or-ganization serving economic developers.
Representatives of Applicant Insight hadbegun to search new sites for relocation. But,Pasco EDC representatives met with compa-ny officials to discuss issues of concern, including the need for a larger facility, as wellas crime and safety.
Instead of relocating, the company signeda lease on a new location in New PortRichey, which keeps 100 high-paying jobs inthe area. Applicant Insight has increased jobsby nearly 30 percent with plans to expand inthe future.
