Working visa numbers soar

THOUSANDS of young peo-ple from financially strug-gling nations such as Greeceand Spain will be allowed towork in Australia under amajor migration scheme.

Critics say the programthreatens local jobs, but theImmigration Departmentboasted it was pushing theworking holiday program.

It is the largest of its kindin the world, with almost260,000 visas issued in2012-13, according to the de-partment’s annual report.

Australia has visa arrange-ments with 28 countries andnegotiations are under waywith another 13, includingfinancially crippled nationswith high youth unemploy-ment such as Greece, Spainand Portugal.

The program, which al-lows foreigners aged 18-30 towork in Australia, has beencriticised by unions andsome migration experts forthreatening the job prospectsof young locals.

They say that Europeans,in particular, are fleeingtheir dismal economies, com-ing to Australia as workingholidaymakers and, in manycases, staying on after beingsponsored for longer-termvisas by employers.

But immigration authorit-ies said that the visa pro-gram was providing strong

support to the agricultural, mining, construction andtourism industries.

‘‘Research indicates thatfor every 100 workingholidaymakers arriving inAustralia, there is a net gainto the Australian economy of6.3 full-time jobs,’’ said thedepartment’s annual report.

This meant an estimatednet gain to the Australian ec-onomy of more than 16,000full-time jobs, it said.

The annual report saidthat 38,147 people were heldin immigration detention in2012-13, almost double thenumber for the previousyear, including 28,000 un-authorised arrivals, mainlycoming by boat.

The 2012-13 permanent mi-gration program comprised190,000 places, including129,000 in the skilled stream.

About 20,000 people weregranted humanitarian visasduring the period.

Stonemason Jani Mollasleft behind family andfriends in Greece to secure abetter economic future forwife Aphrodite and their twochildren in Australia.

Mr Mollas said he wasgrateful for the opportunityto establish his family here.

‘‘I do everything — brick-layer, stonemason— every-thing around the building in-dustry,’’ he said.

‘‘It was very tough backhome — I’m happy to stayhere forever.’’
