HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
Holocaust Memorial Day encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide. It promotes and supports the international day on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day. Our world often feels fragile and vulnerable and we cannot be complacent. Even in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide, and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition. 2020 marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Please visit: www.hmd.org.uk Here you can find different ways explore the theme: “Stand Together”.
“Don’t be content in your life just to do no wrong, be prepared every day to try and do some good.”
(Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued 669 children from Nazi-occupied Europe).
LENT HOUSE GROUPS A five week course starting week beginning 2 March. It has been specially written for “Hebden Royd Churches Together” that explores the music that has touched our lives and encouraged us on our Christian journey. It sounds like a fascinating topic for discussions. Do try to take part and learn from our sisters and brothers in Christ. People who have participated have found great benefit from these groups. There are a range of times and locations to suit most requirements. Please sign the list at the back of church for days and times that suit you. Kay Pierce

FAMILY CATECHESIS AND THE SACRAMENTS 2020 In his letter on the feast of the Holy Family, Bishop Marcus wrote of Family Catechesis and of the opportunity for us all to share in passing on the Catholic faith. It might be too early to be thinking of Lent (!) but when it starts on Wednesday 26 February 2020, we will have launched the programme of catechesis for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion (Confirmation will start September 2020). The Magi whom we celebrated on the feast of Epiphany are great examples of, faith seeking understanding - they went looking, they followed, and they found. The Kings rejoiced and worshipped and then went back home and told their story of discovery. If you have a child in year 3 (First Reconciliation) year 4 (First Communion) and year 5 (Confirmation), start talking about it now with the children. Come along to church so we can get to know you and show your children how much the Holy Mass means to you by regular attendance. We will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation very soon; our children will receive the sacrament on Wednesday 5 February 2020 at 7pm – St Mary’s Halifax – All are welcome to attend.
Also, please note the following dates and times below for the sacramental preparation classes which take place at the Sacred Heart Catholic Voluntary Academy, St Peter’s Avenue, Sowerby Bridge. First Reconciliation classes 4:30 -5:30pm - Sacred Heart CV Academy -

DIOCESE OF LEEDS JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMISSION It was agreed that in 2020 we would establish 3 issue-based groups and, as well as Commission members, invite others to join these groups. The purpose of these groups would be to devise a programme of activities in these areas to support the outcomes that we want to achieve. They would do this by developing project ideas in some detail so that external funding could be sought to undertake the activities identified. The 3 groups agreed were as follows:
1. Palestine Israel Conflict 2. The Climate Emergency 3. UK Poverty

SUMMARY OF RECENT GOOD SHEPHERD CONSULTORS MEETING Tuesday 14 January 2020 7.30 pm Parish Lounge
Present: Jo Woodhead (Chair), Fr Larkin, Jean Marsh, Gez Hodgson, Julie Talbot, Paul Newman, Kay Pierce
The meeting opened with prayer led by Fr Larkin 2) Matters Arising
Kneelers – provision is not being fully utilised as kneelers are often not easily accessed for parishioners who might want to use them – suggest revert to picking them up as need from the back.
Eucharistic Ministers – several parishioners have been approached by Fr Larkin and are considering his request. One has started and another reflecting on the invitation. Fr L is grateful to these.
Bar Volunteers – one new volunteer has come forward. Thank s to Frank Flynn for coordinating the bar for recent events
Children’s room (classroom) – clarification that funding is available to redevelop when needed.
3) Apologies Sean Morris
4) Finance update
Current account stands at approximately £14,688 Total funds at 31.12.19 approximately £73,000
3rd quarter accounts and gift aid submission currently being prepared.
The October finance committee considered the 14 suggestions which had been received for potential tithe recipients. A decision was made to donate £1,000 to each of four charities, all now paid out:
1. Hope Community Village 2. St Augustine’s 3. L’Arche Manchester 4. Andy’s Man Club
We have not paid over any presbytery rental to Catholic Care since March 2019 pending a satisfactory response to enquiries. Perhaps it’s time to consider sending the money to a different organisation, one which engaged with us more actively. We have received about £6,000 in rent since April.
There has been no significant expenditure since the last finance meeting. Nick Burchnall (Chair Finance Committee)
Update: Several requests for specific information about the use of parish donations
(from “presbytery” rental have not been sufficiently informative. Consultors felt it
was appropriate to review the provision of funds to Catholic Care and ask for further
research into projects working for Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the locality which
could directly impact on families and individuals. JW to action.
5) Action Plan update – See separate sheet – earlier in newsletter 6) AGM – Date set for Sunday 23 February after Sunday morning Mass 7) Eucharistic Ministers
Covered under matters arising – see above 8)Volunteers
General feeling that a drive to recruit a new crop to replace older members
Cover this at A.G.M / Raise in parish communication outlets – newsletter / Facebook / email group
Pro Forma for gathering of information re skills / availability
9) Organ / Flower Festival It is now 2 years since the successful venture. We are now looking into the feasibility of holding another. Possible theme: Gifts / Fruits of the Spirit KP / GH to investigate possibilities. Dates: Either w/c 4th May or 11th May 2020 10) Parish Centre / Bar
Bookings down – NCT finished / Flower arrangers disbanded /
Publicity is largely word of mouth – perhaps look to do more here. 11) Children’s Liturgy of the Word Request for more time for children before they return to the body of the church. It was difficult to see where this could be facilitated given the structure of the Mass. 12) Sacrament of Reconciliation is available after Saturday morning Mass (10.30-11.00am) or by private arrangement with Fr Larkin. 13) Church Entrance area - Some parishioners have indicated a need to improve the look of the entrance – particularly for visitors to make it more open and welcoming. Consultors will open up discussions to address the issue. Thanks to those who have already given suggestions which will form part of wider discussions. 14) Good Shepherd wall hanging to be cleaned. It is very dirty. 15) A.O.B.
