On Friday 8th March, 170 Year 9 students had the opportunity to take part in an inspirational Leadership Day at King’s College University, London. Powerful messages about the real meaning of education and the behaviours and attitudes that lead to successful living and learning were delivered in an entertaining, motivating session during the first part of the day. In the second part of the day students worked in small groups where they discussed common classroom scenarios and reflected thoughtfully on how they can individually and collectively take greater responsibility for successful learning in the Academy. A key part of the day was working together on an “INSTEAD” report, the student version of an Ofsted report. The plenary session with David and Bob presented an opportunity for students to say aloud what they learned dur-ing the day and commit to taking action to “Mind the Gap” when back in school.

Welcome To New Staff
Dear Parents and Carers
With Easter coming so early this year, we had a particularly fast and packed term both for staff and for students. The highlight of the past term, and perhaps of the year, was the Awards Evening, held in January. This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the very best of EGA as scores of students from every Year Group came up to collect awards for excellence across every subject. We also celebrated those students who exemplify the Evelyn Grace values—these students are true role models for all in the academy.
Year 11 continue to work exceptionally hard in this the most important of terms for them. As well as focusing in lessons on progressing onto the next level, they are attending a wide range of intervention sessions after school which are held on several days each week. Year 11 have been attending residential study weekends in subjects from Art to Mathematics and I am very grateful to staff who have volunteered to organise and attend these study sessions. Education is about more than passing examinations and I am very pleased that this has been another fantastic term of enrichment and extra-curricular activities. Year 9 excelled themselves in a recent Leadership Day where they spent the day at King’s College University of London, engaging in stimulating activities organised by the university. Students were a great credit to themselves and to the academy that day and were complimented by university staff throughout the day. In addition, our students have been attending classical concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, theatre and drama performances as well as the wide range of sporting and enrichment activities that go on every day after school. Please encourage your son or daughter to throw themselves into the life of the school by signing up to as many enrichment activities as they can. I was very proud to introduce Dr Komiyama, The Head of Mitsubishi Research Institute to our students towards the end of last term. This visit, by such a high profile academic demonstrates the very high profile that our academy is beginning to enjoy in the education world. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and carers for your fantastic and ongoing support of all that we do at the academy. Devon Hanson Principal

SAM Learning EGA is fully signed up to SAM Learning, an innovative course of on-line revision and learning opportunities for all of our students.
Every student has a log in that entitles them free access to additional teaching materials across all of their subjects. The statistics from a sample of 3 million students suggests that 10 hours of Sam Learning completed over an academic year can yield as much as a full grade higher in two subjects.
Please encourage your son or daughter to use SAM learning at least once or twice a week.
Making learning fun
Students choose their own avatars and race their classmates round some of the world’s most famous cities by correctly answering questions and competing to achieve top marks.
As they travel around SAM’s World and take in the sunrise, sunset and the climate in real-time, they increase confidence and consolidate learning – almost without realising – while the competitive element keeps them coming back for more and practising even more.
And while the gameplay is simple, the questions are taxing enough, having been especially written by examiners and teachers.

Theatre Company Visit Futures Theatre Company came to perform their play “Sweet Love” about sexual bullying to Year 8,10 and 11 students. All of Year 8, along with GCSE drama students in Years 10 and 11 enjoyed the show. All students loved the play which was consistently engaging and informative. The performances were followed by a workshop in which students were challenged to think about the issues and how they could change the outcome of the play. This involved using forum theatre in which students came up to play the characters in the play and act out different or alternative scenarios they could have explored.

“Sing into Spring was an interesting and fun day.
The workshops taught us how to sing in a range of
styles, like smooth, legato melodies and using our
voices percussively, across different pieces of music. I
enjoyed learning the canon technique in Ms Eska’s
masterclass and when we all sang Express Yourself
as a massed choir in the closing ceremony.”

SLAM POETRY SESSIONS
Thursday lunchtime 12:25pm – 12:55pm room 2.07
Thursday after school 3:15pm – 4:00pm room 2.07
Slam Poetry Comes to EGA
Slam poetry is here! Over 50 students from Year 8 are
now regularly attending Slam Poetry sessions.
The Thursday lunchtime slot provides an opportunity for
students who wish to come and share their love of poetry
or to listen to others.
There is now an after school session for poetry die-hards
who will begin to develop skills that will help them to go
on and compete in competitions and showcase their
ability to other students.
Mr Morrissey has been excited to see so many students
want to be involved!
What is poetry slam?
Slamming is competitive poetry; where the emphasis is on 'good writing', 'good performance' and 'warmth of audience response'.
Slam poetry!
Slam poetry combines writing with drama, presentation and public speaking, to make poetry
dynamic, accessible and fun. The skills developed by writing and performing poetry are valuable
communication techniques, essential in all areas of life - building confidence and self esteem.

Basically
I do not drag myself out of bed every morning, Yawning, Plan my lesson, To prove my profession, Spell words like it, Give out merits, Give you all the support in my power, Teach a new class hour after hour, Introduce new sentence starters every day, Write a script that might become a play, For you to start a sentence with ‘basically’. Basically is not a sentence starter, Basically is not a proper word, If you use it too much You’ll be called absurd. Today many people use basically, You are the third, Not the first, Like the Lady of Shallot The word is totally cursed, For a new sentence starter You should have a thirst. Pick up a dictionary and look up the meaning, If you use this word in my class again You must be dreaming. Don’t just try a dictionary, Try internet streaming. The word should not be used by you, Nor me, That rule’s easy to remember like 1,2,3, Or A,B,C, Never ever start a sentence With ‘Basically’. Christale De’Abreu, 7G
EGA students attended a concert preformed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra where they heard classics inspired by the works of Shakespeare. 25 Year 9s were nominated by Music and English teachers to see the concert. Students saw the orchestra perform a range of pieces associated with the story of Romeo and Juliet (from the Ballet, Opera and West Side Story to name just a few). Orchestral works were accompanied by acting and dialogue to help students understand the story-telling of the music. Pupils really enjoyed the trip and experienced something that most of them had never seen before.
On Friday 8th March Miss McCurdy took 17 GCSE dance pupils to
‘Move It’.
This was a great opportunity for our dancers to develop their
skills through a dance exhibition including interactive workshops
at the London Olympia.
The girls (pictured below) enjoyed the day where they got to
take part in a number of workshops as well as watching dance
shows by professionals.

French Trip to Les Misérables
Royal Festival Hall
This term Year 11 drama students sat their first practical exam. They had developed Theatre in Education pieces aimed at Year 7s and then performed them to selected Year 7s as part of their exam. The Year 7 audiences were selected due to their excellent work and attitude in drama and really enjoyed watching the performance. Students had to devise, direct, light and costume the pieces, deciding on what topics would be suitable for Year 7s and how to present them. Topics ranged from bullying, peer pressure, problems and transition.
Year 11 Theatre in Education
Year 11 French students went to see Les Misérables at the Ritzy in Brixton, they commented ‘c’était un film très passionnant. Je l’ai adoré!’ We hope to return to the Ritzy soon!
The school trip to Barcelona organised by the Modern Foreign Languages department will be taking place next term. We are pleased with the interest shown by students. Those who have returned their slips will be hearing from Ms Tainsh soon regarding their place on the trip.
