DECORATION DAY-Mr- .
Longfellow's Last Poem.
Bleep, comrades, sleep and restOn this Field of the Grounded Arms,
"Where fots no more molest,Nor sentry's shot alarms t
To have slept on the ground beforo,And started to your feet
At the cannon's sudden roar,Or the drum's redoubling beat.
But in this camp of DeathNo sound your slumber breaks
Here is no fevered breath,No wound that bleeds and aches.
All is repose and peace,Untiampled lies the sod;
The shouts of battle cease,It is the Truce of God I
Beit, comrade, rest and sleep fThe thoughts of men shall bo
As sentinels to keepYour rest from danger freo
Your silent tents of green"We deck with fragrant flowers;
Yours has the suffering been,The memory shall be ours.
Paying a Dublin Cabby.
In Dublin the legal charge for aBbort ride in a public carriage is anEnglish sixpence, but cabby expectsyou to give him very much more, and he always gets something inaddition to the actual fare. If youask him what his price is, he invari-ably "laves it.to your honor;" butwhan you have paid him, no matterhow many times the lawful amount,he is never satisfied. Two Amer-ican gentlemen in Dublin, a shorttime ago, made a bet, one holdingthat he would give "cabby" such afee that he could ask no more. Thishis friend declared was not possible. They took a cab, the first they met,and rode a distance of about twomiles.
"How much do I owe you?" in-
quired the gentleman at the end ofthe journey.
"Sure an' your honor can give mewhatever you like," said the driver.
"But 1 would rather you wouldname your own charges."
"Indeed an' I won't. It's not forme to say what a fine gentleman likeyou will give me."
Thus put to tho test the. "finegentleman" handed mm over half aBovereign iu gold for a ride thatshould have cost a sixpence at most.
Cabby looked at the coin then attho gentleman, as if doubting theevidence of his senses at this unex-pected munificence, but soon re-
covering from his surprise, he puthis hand to his hat in respectful ac-
knowledgment of his gratitude."You have lo3t you bet," whis-
pered the friend as they turned toleave. But before he and his com-
panion had walked a half dozenEteps, the driver, leaving his horseand vehicle to take care of them-selves, was by their side, hat inhand,
"Well, what do you want now;haven't you got your faro?"
"So, I have," said tho driver, with an insinuating smile, "an' it'syourself is the gentleman that gavemo a fine one this blessed day ; butyour honor, haven't you a spare six-
pence in your pocket; I don't like'tochango the gold."

FUTDAY, JULY 28, 1882.
COCOIIEII'B IITQUE8TS.
Tho remark is not infrequentlyheard, in connection with iv fuse ofttuihlen ilcuth, " There ought to havebeen an inquest held, to ascertaintho eauo of death." Tito law onthe subject is to he found in theCivil Codr, Sections 318 to H.'SO.
One clause reads, "As soon uh any
roioner shall have notice of thedeath of any person supposod tohave come to such death by poison-hi!- ?,
violence, or in any .suspiciousmanner, ho shall forthwith issue hisHiimnions," &c. Section fl'2'J readsas follows: "When any coroner
shall not think it necessary, on view of such body, thatliny inquest should be taken, heshall eausp the body to be decentlybiuicd."
Thus it will bo seen that the in-
tent of the law is to require theholding of an inquest only when thecircumstances are such as to lead tothe suspicion of foul plaj , and thatthe coioner is, allowed a discretion inthe matter.
We aie aware that in many coun-
tries it is the practice to hold in-
quests in very many if not all easesof sudden deatli ; and we are also thatthat not infrequently the cupidity ofolllcials has led to grave abuses as toinquests. We have heard of onebody of "an unknown" mado tofurnish the opportunity of chargingmore than one set of fees.
Wo arc inclined to think that, under our laws, whenever nn inquestis really necessary to explain or toexamines into suspicious circum.Mances of sudden deatli, ono will bepretty burc to be had.
OUE CEMETERY.After several unsuccessful at-
tempts to got together those owninglots in the Oahu Cemetery, theTreasurer, A. J. Cartwright, Esq.,succeeded yestcrdivy morning in
meeting at the Chamber of Comme-
rce-Ilooins with about a dozen per-
sons, (including one lady) and thebusiness of the Association was ac-
complished. This wits first, theelection of set en Trustees, to serverespectively one, two and threeyears. Capl. Mist was appointedSecretary, pro tern. The followinggentlemen weie then elected Trus-
tees: A. J. Caitwiight and .las. I.Dowsctt, 1st class; E. P. Adamsand S. G. "Wilder, 2nd class ; A. S.Cleghorn, J. II. Paty and Ucv. S.C. Damon, 3rd class. The Treasurer, Mr. Cartwright, then presentedhis accounts, up to the 1st of thepresent month, which showed cashin hand amounting to tho very res-
pectable sum of SG,472.80, and theHum of S250 as due the Association. Some discussion ensued as to thokind and extent of improvementsdesirable to be made in and uponthe Cemetery grounds, and it wasthe unanimous sense of those presentthat the unsightly enclosures oflots ought to bo removed, and a uni-
form system of stone curbs substi-
tuted, say fifteen inches high ; thata handsome stone or concrete fenceshould enclose tho grounds; and
that the walks should bo improvedand graded. It was found on refer-
ence to the Constitution of the As-
sociation that the Trustees nrj there-
in authorized to make all needed im-
provements.After the meeting had ailjourned,
tho Trustees met and elected thefollowing olllccrs : President, Jas. I.Dowsett; Vice-Preside- SamuelG. Wilder; Secretary, .Tno. II.Paly; Treasurer, A. J. Caitwiight.

Moonlight fishing parties are allthe rage among the natives justnow, and the wharves are nightlylined with young aud old of bothsexes, with rod and line endeavoringto catch the small red fish known asAlcJaua. FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1882,
A Conscionco Strlckon Animal.A few years ago Dr. Schomberg,
tho superintendent of tho BotnuioGarden of Adelaide, Australia, tookcharge of a select corps of monkeysand kangaroos, a " happy family,"he might have called tbcm, if it hadnot been for the depravity of an oldbabuina, or female Bhunder baboon. If she had not been tho only repre-sentative of her encciea. ho wouldhave tried to get rid of her, for heronly object in life Boomed to be tomake herself as disagreeable 'aspossible. Solitary conflnement madeher wildly obstrenerous. but in tho.family cage she kept the marsupialsin a delirium of terror, and in theeveninir when her vounerer relativesventured to enter the sleeping boxshe seemed to consider herself di-
vinely ordained to remove them byforce. But one day she attackedher own keeper, and without anv an--parent provocation lacerated hiswrist in a shocking way. Schom- -ocrg at once ordered ner to be shot.
Tho noxt mornine tho assistantkeeper approached her eacre with ashot gun which had often been used10 snoot tne rats that infested themenagerie building. Tho other mon-keys eoemed to expect anotherrazzia, but the bhunder knew better. The moment she saw the gun shemade a dash into the sleeping cage, and when the keeper tried to openthe door she yelled as if she hopedto get off on a plea of insanity.Meaning to try her, tho keeperwaited till breakfast time, but thobabuina did not show herself. Shekept out of sight a full hour, till themess-bo- y broueht an extra lunch ofsliced pumpkin, when sho made arusn ior tne oucKet is hopes of socuring a portable pioco. In thatmoment tho keeper bolted the doorof her sleeping cage, and wont backior nis snot gun. as soon as thebabuina caught sight of him she fleAitoward her place of refuge, andfinding the door locked, made a madattempt to sqneeze herself throughthe interspaces of the front railing. But the bars proved inflexible, andaftor another desperate pull at theslecping-cag- o door, the babuinaflung herself into a corner, closedher eyes, and was apparently deadwitk fear before the buckshot strckher.
Names of Hen and Things
It is interesting to notice how thenames of famous men are appliedto various objects in every-da- y lifeWe now go into a shop and ask fora pair of Wellingtons, or a pair ofBluchers. The boot maker showsno surprise at such a renucst. ITnmerely brings out a pair of boots.By such bHmble means as this is ahero's memory kent preen. Ami nnWellington and Blucher have girentheir name to a kind of boot, soSpencer has to a coat, Stanhope toone kind of carriage, and Broughamto another; Petersham to a hat,Standish to an inkstand. Sandwichto an eatable, and Admiral Grogramto the mixture of spirits and waterwhich goes by the name of " grog."
The old adago used to bo, " nothing liko leather," It should be"nothing liko paper." Paper isused for almost evory thinir. BerlinExhibition not long since, worepapor buckets, " bronze" urns, as-
phalt roofing, water-can- s, carpets, skirts, whole suits of clothes, jewel-ry material for garden walks, win-dow curtains lanterns and pockothandkorchiefs. Tho most stirkingof tho many objects exhibited intbiB material was, perhaps, a firestovo, with a cheorful firo burningin it. There woro nowly-invente- d
railway crriacres and carrin.V wlmnln.ohimnoy pots, flour barrels, cottagewalls, roofing tiles and bricks anddies for stamping, all mado of paper.
Attention has froquentlyy beencalled to tho valuo of ordinary sheotsof paper as a substitute for bodclothes, or, at least, an addition tobed-olotho- s. The idea secraB tohave suggested the fabrication of"blankets" from therheap material, and if nil that is said of them is true, thoy ought to be extensively used.
