5TH JUNE 2017 THE MONUMENT AND INFORMATION BOARDCOMPLETED AND DEDICATED

Thomas Fowell Buxton, wasMP for Weymouth 1818-1837.This monument was erectedin 2017 to commemorate hisachievements, in particularhis role as leader of the anti-slavery group in Parliament,which resulted in theabolition of slavery in theBritish Empire in August1833.

The monument was designedby Peter Loizou, then astudent at Weymouth College.The Stones were carved bystudents at the collegeMasonry Department. Thefunds for building themonument were raised bypublic subscription.

A grant from the HeritageLottery Fund enabled thedesign and installation of theInformation Board whichaccompanies the monument.
