The Biodegradable Plastic Packaging Market 2013-2023: Bioplastic Polymers
8. Expert Opinion
8.1 Vineet Dalal, Vice President & Director of Global Market
Development, Natur-Tec Visiongain sought the expert opinion of Mr. Vineet Dalal in October 2013 who has been the Vice
President and Director of Global Market Development - Natur-Tec at Northern Technologies
International Corp. since November 2005. We thank him for his participation and industry
expertise. Major topics discussed included the key trends and developments in the biodegradable
plastic packaging industry, the key drivers and restraints, and the prospective of the global
biodegradable plastic packaging industry.
8.1.1 Food and Organic Waste Diversion Drive the US Bioplastic Market Visiongain: What are the key trends and developments that you are currently witnessing in the
biodegradable plastic packaging market?
Vineet Dalal: The bioplastic plastic market is divided into two categories; the bio-based plastics
such as bio-PET for example with Coca-Cola and drop-in molecules, and then you have the
compostable plastic stream. In the compostable packing the bulk of the application has been in
compostable bags for food waste and organic waste collection, food packaging, compostable
cutlery and dishware. Most of this has been driven by organic waste and food waste diversion; to
divert food waste collection from landfill to composting. This is the trend seen in the US, and we
suspect the same for the UK.
The other applications we have seen are in mulch films and agriculture films. Each market has a
specific requirement when using biodegradable materials, and limitations on the use of synthetic
materials. For example; a current on-going debate is whether we can use compostable films for
organic farming. The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) has certain restrictions on
synthetic materials in organic farming, however, an argument has been made to exempt
compostable films from the synesthetic category because these can be completely biodegraded
and the carbon is assimilated by microorganisms. This should in turn drive demand for mulch film,
compostable film and agricultural films in the US.

9.1.1 Investments $5.8 bn (€4,215 million) was invested by the Group in 2012, towards property, plant and
equipment, out of which 14% was allocated to the plastics segment.
In 2012, BASF developed numerous innovative products and applications for customers in a wide
variety of sectors. They now offer a substantially broadened range of engineering plastics which
are approved for applications that come into contact with food and drinking water. The demanding
requirements for these plastics include very low migration values and a high level of taste
neutrality.
Additionally the Group has expanded their line of biodegradable plastics with the addition of
ecovio® Mulch, a grade that can be used in the manufacture of mulch films for agriculture. Unlike
conventional agricultural films, films made of ecovio® Mulch can be simply plowed under after the
harvest without needing to be laboriously collected, cleaned, disposed of or recycled.
