The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Hamish and Andy
On Monday 2nd November, Hamish and Andy will be
transmitting their radio program from Wedderburn. The
Wedderburn College school day will continue, however, we
are aware that some students maybe supporting community
organisations to run events on this day or accompanying their
family to the event. If your child is not attending school
please notify the school preferably via COMPASS previous to
the day, or by phone if COMPASS is not possible. If your
child is going to be at school in the morning, but leaving at
midday to attend the Hamish and Andy event, the school
requires parental permission. This could be a COMPASS
entry, note or phone call. Your child will need to be signed
out from the Front Office upon leaving the school as is our
policy.

The Wedderburn College students will be attending the
Hamish and Andy Parade with staff on Monday.
Student Pick Ups at 3:30pm
Due to the Hamish and Andy event, parents are required to do
their student pick-ups after school in Chapel Street adjacent to
the KLC. This is very important for the safety of all our
students. Drop off in the morning is as usual.
Being Ready to Learn
A crucial component of taking responsibility for learning is
that every student arrives at every class every day with the
equipment required to be ready to learn. This means having a
positive mindset, being enthusiastic about new learning and
having all of the resources required to participate actively in
the class. In Years 5-12 this means having your netbook/
BYOD device charged and ready to support you in your
learning. Of late there have been some students who are not
taking responsibility for ensuring that their device is fully
charged, set to access the College network or even at school.
It is every student’s responsibility to take charge of their
learning by ensuring everything they need for class is ready
and is taken to class.
This readiness not only supports their learning but is
preparation for life as a continuing student and the workforce.

PREP LATESTAY AND GRADE 1 SLEEPOVER- Thursday 5th November
Our Prep/1 students and their teachers are eagerly anticipating this exciting event! Notes and information have been
sent home by Mrs Tanya Chalmers this week. Don’t forget that you can also give permission for your child to attend
this event on Compass.
KINDER TRANSITION PROGRAM
Next week our Prep students for 2016 will begin visiting the College as part of our Kinder to Prep transition program.
On Thursday, 5th November, parents are to bring their kinder students to school between 8:40 and 9am, where Mrs
Tanya Chalmers will be waiting to greet them. A parent information session with myself and previous ‘new Prep
parents’ will begin at 9:15 in the College staffroom. I look forward to meeting both our new class of students and
parents. Any questions about any of the transition sessions, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
P-6 ASSEMBLY
Our next P-6 assembly will take place in the BER atrium, next Wednesday 4th November at 9am. Families and
community members are welcome to attend. Grade 5 will be presenting something
special, and Student of the Week and Caught Being Good for Honesty awards will be
presented by classroom teachers- remember you will receive a phone call or an email
if your child will be a recipient.

Kanga Cricket
On Thursday the 29th of October we have seventeen Grade 5 & 6 students participating in the Kanga 8's cricket
tournament at Boort. We have entered a boy and girl team. Happy Bowling and Batting!
Playgroup
Our new outdoor play area is taking shape and the playgroup children were very excited to help plant our strawberries,
vegetables and herbs. These plants will be the most well watered plants in Wedderburn. It's lovely to see the
excitement and joy on their faces, and as the saying goes ‘many hands make light work’.
We are looking forward to lots of water play outside when the weather gets a little warmer.

YEAR 7-10 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS
Year 9/10 Art “Baldarchi” Portrait Competition
Congratulations to Matt McMahon who took out the College’s inaugural “Baldy” with his excellent coloured pencil
depiction of the two sides to the American war icon, 'Uncle Sam'. Not only was Matt’s artwork impressive, he also
spoke eloquently about his design and creation processes. Laura Van De Wetering was the runner up, closely followed
by Zoe Combes and Jesse Douglas in equal third place.
All students who participated in the competition showed skill and finesse with their chosen art materials and
successfully represented a range of heroes and villains within their artworks. The College would like to extend a big
thank you to all family and community members who attended the opening and cast their vote.
Gnurad Gundidj - School for Student Leadership There will be an information session with the Principal of Gnurad Gundidj Campus for the School for Student
Leadership at Wedderburn College on Tuesday 10th November 2015 at Wedderburn College commencing at
11.30am. This session will normally take about one hour and includes a short power point plus question-answer session.
2016 Year 9/10 Program & Early Entry to VCE The College is still in the process of finalising the 2016 timetable. It is not possible to provide Year 9/10 students with
the elective options or the VCE unit options to apply for early entry to VCE until this process is completed. If any
changes were made to the timetable students would have to re-select their electives and units, which is unfair and an
inconvenience to all involved. It is expected that the Year 9/10 Handbook with these key details will be released by
Week 6.
Year 8 Federation Uni Camp
Year 8 students will be attending Federation University on Wednesday 2nd December, staying overnight and returning
on Thursday 3rd December. This camp is a fantastic opportunity for students to get a taste of what post schooling life is
all about - both at Uni and TAFE. The camp is fully organised by Federation University and is at no cost to students.

Year 7 Transition Events
On 25th November students in Grade 6 and their families from Wedderburn College, Inglewood Primary and Inglewood
St Mary’s are invited to attend an afternoon of activities and dinner at Melville’s Cave to commence the transition
activities into Year 7 in 2016. Students will travel out to Melville’s Caves at 2pm. Dinner is being provided by the
Parents Association at 5pm. Parents/Carers are welcome to come out at anytime to participate and meet other families.

YEAR 11-12 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS
Congratulations to our Year 12 students who completed their formal classes last week! 13 years of schooling has come
to an end for our senior students and we were able to celebrate the occasion together last Thursday evening at our
Celebration Dinner. The night was a wonderful opportunity for our students, their families and staff to dress up and
reminisce on the achievements, dreams and experiences we’ve all shared throughout their schooling years. ‘Granny
Fowles’ did a wonderful job of MC for the evening, with many other students contributing to the night. Past student,
Lisa Steel was our guest speaker for the evening and entertained us all with tales of her travel and university days.
I would like to extend a big thank you to all staff and students involved in preparing for the evening. Without their
dedication and support the night would not have been such a success! I would also like to thank the Wedderburn Tennis
club for their delicious catering on the evening!
Official VCAA VCE end of year examinations will began today, Wednesday 28th October, with the English exam. Our
last examination here at Wedderburn College will be on Thursday 12th November. Please see below for the examination
timetable: I would like to remind all students to be mindful of these examinations and ask them to keep noise around the KLC and
Hub to a minimum during the above times.

Students in Year 9-12 are encouraged to attend our POWER HOUR study sessions on Tuesday evenings in the BER

Atrium between 3.40 – 5.00pm. This supervised study session are supervised with the aims of supporting students to
complete homework, revision and other schooling requirements in a focussed, supportive environment. Healthy snacks
are provided for students during the after school session.
Any community members who are interested and would like to volunteer their time to support students during Power
Hour each week are encouraged to make contact with Margaret- Anne Wright or myself.

Year 12 VCAA Examinations: began with the English exam today, Wednesday 28th October and will conclude
Thursday, 12th November.
Year 11 Examination period: will begin on Wednesday 18th November and conclude on Tuesday 24th November.

Compass News
Hands on Compass Session (Repeat) On Monday 9th November between 5pm and 6:30pm parents/carers are invited to attend a training session on Compass.
This will be an opportunity for users to get assistance and training on any feature of Compass (logging in, submitting
absences, viewing student’s attendance, continuous reporting, etc.). A number of computers will be available to log into
and practice using the Compass system. This is a hands on session so you can arrive/leave at any time that suits you.
Continuous Reporting -Week 5 Next week (Week 5 - how time flies) is the next key date for feedback and feed forward to be uploaded to Compass for all students
in Years P - 11. Please note that often feedback/feed forward is uploaded at other times for some classes so you should be regularly
checking your student’s comments as well as monitoring whether they are up-to-date with their work commitments.
GENERAL NEWS Homework Club The College provides support to students by offering teacher assistance at a lunchtime Homework Club. The Club will
is in the Library on Tuesdays at lunchtime (2nd half) and Mrs McHugh supervises. Any students who require assistance
with any form of homework should to attend.

Chaplain’s Chat
Voting has now ended for entries in the Philmac Project and judging of those entries occurs this week so we will find
out how successful we were in the coming few days. Let’s hope that we have fulfilled the criteria to get some funding
support from Philmac Irrigation.
Last week I made mention of another Men’s Camp Oven Dinner I have
organised for Saturday 7th November. This will be a roast dinner cooked bush
style (the best way to do it). Hopefully the
weather is kind to us avoiding a total fire
ban allowing us to go ahead. If you are
interested in attending and know any men
who you would like to bring, please let the
school or myself know so that we can
prepare adequate food for everyone.

CANTEEN ROSTER: Paddle pops are currently only available in chocolate and rainbow flavour. We are still selling Olaf the Snowman ice
creams for $2.20. the canteen is still selling homemade Shepherds Pie for $4.50, and homemade XL meat pies for
$5.00. We currently only have raspberry flavour available for Slushies. They are still $1.75.
The canteen is always looking for new parent volunteers to help out on Fridays. The time required is 1130am -
130pm. Please contact the school to let us know if we can put your name down for next year!

KOOL SKOOLS CD
This years Kool Skool's CD is now available for purchase at the office. The cost is $5 each.
Well done to the students who took part in making the CD. It is always the highlight of the year for the music students
involved.
The CD was launched on Saturday October 10th at the Boort Show.

This week Miss Martin's Grade 3/4 Class came to visit the garden.
Students were ready to pick and taste, yes taste the crop they had planted as seeds in term 3 which turned out to
be broad beans. Giving these a try was a new experience (especially eating them raw) for a lot of the students. Of
course the students wanted to share what they had picked with Miss Martin who they collected a large amount for.
Some of the students planted potatoes which should be ready by the end of term 4. These, I would think will not be
eaten raw.
Mr Hocking's Year 9/10 Horticultural Class were up at the garden Monday afternoon working on the construction of
their hot house. It was great to see the students having a turn at something they may not be too confident with, but
working together to make happen.
Other students dug garden beds over then planted corn seedlings. Wire was put around each garden bed to keep the
chooks off. That's all for this week.

COMMUNITY NEWS WEDDERBURN COMMUNITY OP SHOP
Wedderburn Community Op Shop is in DESPERATE need of second hand uniforms. If you have any school uniforms
that no longer fit your child or you no longer need them, can you please donate them to the Op Shop? You can drop
them at the shop when we are open on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or the last Sunday of the month (Farmers Market).
We also have a drop off bin located right next to the Tyre Centre coming into town from Bendigo direction.
Are you in Year 10 or 11? Ever thought about completing Years 11 and 12 overseas?
There are 14 United World Colleges around the world where students from over 80 countries live together and study the
IB. You could be one of those students.
Applications for scholarships and places to attend a UWC are now open. Places are available at Wales, The Netherlands,
Costa Rica, India, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Singapore for 2016.
An information session will be held on Sun 8th Nov between 1 and 3 pm at Kathleen Syme Library, Faraday St. Carlton

Wedderburn mainly music
Due to some foreseen circumstances this term, the team at mainly music have decided to place the program into recess
until February 2016.
After much consideration mainly music will be changing its day to a Monday, so as not to coincide with the Wedderburn
Kindergarten session and any other community groups that involve young families. Our new starting time will be
10.30am to make it a little easier for families to attend. Our first session in 2016 will be held on Monday 1st February at
10.30am at the Uniting Church Hall, High Street Wedderburn.
Our special Christmas Break Up will be held on Wednesday 25th November commencing at 10am.
We look forward to catching up with our mainly music families and anyone else who would like to
join us that morning as all are very welcome. Our program includes a morning of songs, rhymes,
Christmas carols, craft, morning tea and play.

purposes.
Parents, please ensure that you mark your children’s belongings. In this way, we can return lost properties to the right-
ful owners.
