MICHIGAN - One of the most affordable hybrid vehicles on the marketjust added another compelling reason to buy for 2017. Toyota opti-mized the size and weight of its hybrid technology for the Prius cplatform, but that does not mean it left anything out. The system inte-grates a gasoline engine, an electric motor within a ContinuouslyVariable Transaxle, a nickel-metal hydride battery, a power controlunit (inverter), a DC-DC conver ter anda step-up converter. A hybrid controlcomputer governs the seam-less application ofgasoline engine andelectric power de-pending on drivingdemands and se-lected drive mode. The Prius c's SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3)-rated 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder gasolineengine utilizes an Atkinson cycle to help increase efficiency. By itself, the engineproduces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybridsystem output of 99 hp. The hybrid system also yields excellent fuel efficiency withan EPA estimated MPG of 48 city/43 highway/46 combined.ECO reduces overall energy consumption by governing the climate control systemand throttle operation to help enhance vehicle efficiency. Under certain conditionsEV Mode allows the Prius c to be driven solely by electric power forunder one mile while remaining below 25 mph. That's useful whennavigating one of those huge mall parking lots, for example. Theaddition of the Toyota Safety Sense C system to all 2017 Prius cmodels is designed to help drivers avoid hazards on the road.

OTTAWA - According to statistics released by The Canadian Real EstateAssociation (Crea), national home sales were up on a month-over-monthbasis in December 2016.The number of homes trading hands via Canadian MLS® Systems rose 2.2% month-over-month in December 2016. The rebound recovered less thanhalf of the drop in activity from October to November, when it posted thebiggest monthly retreat in more than four years after tightened mortgageregulations came into effect.Activity was up on a month-over-month basis in about 60% of all local mar-kets, led by Calgary and Edmonton where sales rallied following large de-clines in November. Actual (not seasonally adjusted) sales activity wasdown 5.0% in December from a year ago, when it reached the highest levelever for the month. The number of homes changing hands in 2016 was up by6.3% annually, reflecting strong sales activity in the first half of the year thathas softened since."Sales set a new annual record last year," said CREA President Cliff Iverson."However, tightened mortgage regulations are expected to contribute to lowersales activity this year, though the extent to which they will weigh on housingmarkets across Canada will vary. All real estate is local, and REALTORS®remain your best source for information about sales and listings where youlive or might like to in the future.""Home sales are unlikely to benefit the Canadian economy as much in 2017

as they did in 2016," said Gregory Klump, CREA's Chief Economist. "Newregulations mean that in order to qualify for a mortgage, home buyers willeither have to save longer for a bigger down payment or purchase a lowerpriced home. In urban centres where the latter are in short supply, that's likelyto translate into fewer sales."The number of newly listed homes fell 3.0% in December 2016 compared toNovember. New listings were down in about 60% of all local markets, withsizeable declines in B.C.'s Lower Mainland, Calgary and the Greater TorontoArea (GTA).

Just a 45-minute brisk walk aweek can improve arthritisNEW YORK, (IANS) Older people suffering from ar thritis canremain fit by engaging in 45 minutes of moderate physicalactivity such as brisk walking a week, says a study. Accordingto US federal guidelines, achieving 150 minutes of moderateactivity per week helps in preventing premature death and se-rious illness. However, only one in 10 older adults with ar thri-tis meet these guidelines. The team from Nor thwestern Univer-sity conducted a study on both men and women to determinethat 45 minutes per week is the magic number for seniors. Theresearchers measured the physical activity of 1,600 adults whohad pain, aching or stiffness in their hips, knees or feet. "Wefound the most effective type of activity to maintain or improveyour function two years later was moderate activity, and it didnot need to be done in sessions lasting 10 minutes or more, asrecommended by federal guidelines," Dunlop concluded. Ap-proximately, one third of par ticipants improved or had highfunction after two years. But those par ticipants who achievedthe minimum of 45 minutes of moderate activity per week were80 per cent more likely to improve over two years comparedwith those doing less.

Menstrual cramps and HomeopathyBY AKSHAY BANKER

Recently I was approached by a ladyof about 28 years age complaining ofsevere pain during her menstrualcycle to the extent she would vomitand faint. Her family had to call 911on several occasions due to this situ-ation and she tried various treatmentswith no results. Homeopathic treat-ment relieved her complaints com-pletely.So we will try to know about role ofhomeopathy in female problems. Letus see the most common and pri-mary complaint of Painful Mensesalso called Menstrual cramps or Dys-menorrhoea. This complaint is usu-ally seen in young girls who havestar ted menstruating or may bepresent in women of other ages. It isgenerally a dull, throbbing or cramp-ing pain of a mild severity or may bevery severe to make the person cryout and inability to do any activity tillthe pain subsides. If it is mild then notreatment is necessary but if severethen it needs to be treated. Usuallythe complaint reduces as the girlgrows older and stops after first de-livery. Symptoms - include - Dull,

throbbing or cramping pain in lowerabdomen which may begin 4 - 5 daysbefore the onset of menstrual flow,Pain that radiates to lower back andthighs, Nausea and vomiting, Loosestools, Sweating, Dizziness. Theremay be mood swings or irritabilityand crying due to the pain. Intensityand severity of symptoms also de-pend on individual sensitivity to bearthe pain. I have seen girls to dreadthe nearing date of menses and theytry to prepare themselves for the se-vere experience of pain and othersymptoms.Causes - normally the pain is due tothe uterus getting ready to expel itsinner lining called endometrium inthe form of menstruation and this pro-cess of separation along with the con-tractions taking place produce thepain. There is usually no pathologi-cal cause involved. In some womenthe cramps may be due to - En-dometriosis, Uterine fibroid, Ad-enomyosis, Pelvic inflammatory dis-ease, Cervical stenosis. Dysmenor-rhoea is seen where there is a familyhistory of similar menstrual cramps.Complications - menstrual cramps

do not have complications by them-selves except they disturb the nor-mal daily activities till they last. Com-plications may arise due to the un-derlying pathological conditionsmentioned above. Diagnosis - is usu-ally done by medical history and pel-vic examination. Hysteroscopy, Ul-trasound, CT scan, MRI are advisedas and when needed. Treatment - InAllopathy this condition is treated bynon-steroid anti inflammatory drugslike Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Ponstel etcwhich take care of the pain. Hormonalbirth control treatment is given to pre-vent ovulation which may decreasethe pain. Surgery is advised for theunderlying pathology. In Homeopathy the approach to thisproblem is different. I have seen thatpatients come to us because it is notgood to constantly go on taking painkillers because they do have theirside effects on other important or-gans of the body. In homeopathy wetake the physical symptoms into con-sideration along with the mental andemotional disturbance it produces. We have seen the young girl to bedepressed before menses, some-

times she fears the appearance ofmenses and anticipates the mensestime with apprehension. A detailedhistory is taken in which all the com-plaints are covered apart from themenstrual, her mental emotionalstate, past history and family historyare also considered and a constitu-tional medicine is selected. This ho-meopathic medicine will be helpfulto put a stop to this problem of men-strual cramps, so there will be noneed to take pain killers every monthor to wait till the first delivery. An-other advantage of this medicine isthat it will also help in treating theunderlying pathological conditionslike fibroid, endometriosis, etc.Homeopathic medicines are usefulfor all kinds of diseases of womenlike menstrual problems, menopause, vaginal discharge, complaints dur-ing pregnancy, complaints of breast, sterility or infer tility, PCOS, sexualcomplaints, etc. Homeopathy pro-vides a solutions to all kinds of prob-lems and diseases. Biggest advan-tage of taking homeopathic medi-cines is that the medicines do nothave side effects, are not habit form-ing and can be taken even duringpregnancy.Akshay BankerM D (Homoeopathy)Ex Principal, Professor [India]+1 647 868 4340Nina BankerM D (Homoeopathy)Ex professor [India]+1 647 773 3074Jhanvi BankerBSc.[Psychology]Homoeopath+1 647 700 5074Homeopathic Clinics:1. 93, Dundas St. E., Suite 107,Mississauga, ON. PEOPLE IN INDIA DEEPLYCONCERNED ABOUT WELFAREOF DAIRY ANIMALSMUMBAI - On National Milk Day, World Animal Protection re-search reveals overwhelming support for better welfare standards fordairy animals. A new survey, commissioned by World Animal Protec-tion, has revealed the cruel treatment of animals in local dairies inIndia is unacceptable to almost 90% of people who responded; high-lighting strong support for better protection of dairy animals across thecountry. Almost half of those surveyed were unaware that millions ofdairy animals are being kept in illegal, unregulated local dairies intheir cities and suburbs. Animals suffer in cruel, barren and unsanitaryconditions, often deprived of their basic needs, such as access toclean water and food, and being tethered their whole lives. With almost300 million dairy cows and buffalo, India is by far the largest dairyproducer in the world. People care strongly about the welfare of ani-mals, with 90% of respondents wanting to see better lives for dairyanimals that provide milk for them and their families. The survey also reveals:* almost 90% of people surveyed strongly agree dairies shouldbe closed if they don't consider the welfare needs of dairy animals* almost 87% think the government should intervene and bringin better welfare standards and practices to protect dairy animals* nearly 90% are more likely to buy products from a companythat sources from dairies adopting better animal welfare practices* 3 out of 4 who regularly buy dairy brands, would be willing topay 5-10% more for products that come from dairies offering betteranimal welfare. The survey results have prompted World Animal Protection, on Na-tional Milk Day, to call on the people of India to demand for betterwelfare for dairy animals in India. Gajender Sharma, Country Directorof World Animal Protection India, says: "It's unacceptable that animalsare living in appalling conditions, not meeting their basic needs. Theseresults show that peoplewant better welfare for our dairy cattle, and itmatters to them where their milk comes from."This is why, we are asking people to join us in calling on the govern-ment toend the suffering of dairy animals, by committing to phase outlocal dairies, and ensuring better welfare standards for dairy animalsin India. Illegal local dairies that disregard the welfare needs of ani-mals need to end. These dairies keep animals in conditions mostpeople find unacceptable, and also cause environmental and healthconcerns in our cities."We'vemade great progress, since 2014,with the introduction of thefirst National Dairy Code of Practice for the Management of DairyAnimals in India, which offers guidance on humane and sustainablepractices in our dairies. We now need to see this code implementedand enforced without delay." Major General (Dr) R. M. Kharb, Chair-man, Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) says: "AWBI stronglysupports the adoption of better welfare practices for dairy animals inIndia. Implementing guidelines from the National Code of Practice, developed by the National Dairy Research Institute, in partnershipwith World Animal Protection, will help dairy animals live happier, healthier and more productive lives."In 2015, AWBI issued an advisory to all state governments, recom-mending they implement the guidelines of the National Code of Prac-tice to ensure better welfare of dairy cattle. This will not onlypromote and protect the welfare of dairy cattle, but will alsolead to sustainable dairy farming."

Tobacco-related deaths will riseto 8 mn by 2030: ReportGENEVA, (IANS) The global total annual number of deaths linkedto tobacco consumption will increase from the current six mil-lion to eight million by 2030, according to a study by the WorldHealth Organisation and the US National Cancer Institute. Around80 per cent of smokers across the world live in low and middle-income countries, and will pay a higher price in tackling theeconomic consequences of the addiction, said the study re-leased recently."The number of tobacco-related deaths is projected to increasefrom about six million deaths annually to about eight millionannually by 2030," says the repor t, titled 'The Economics ofTobacco and Tobacco Control'. Although tobacco consumptionis declining at the global level, there is a great risk that WHOwill not meet its target of reducing tobacco consumption by 30per cent by 2025, the study adds. Another section of the studylooks at the consequences of passive smoking for individualsand also for public health systems, which in many cases bearthe cost of treatment. The repor t urges governments to investmore in information and prevention campaigns, due to the at-tractiveness of tobacco to young people, who are often not fullyaware of its harmful consequences. "Effective policy and pro-grammatic interventions are available to reduce the demand for tobaccoproducts and the death, disease, and economic costs that result from theiruse, but these interventions are underutilised." The repor t cites hightaxes on tobacco, policies on establishing smoke-free spaces, banning marketing of tobacco and campaigns to spread aware-ness, as the most effective but not sufficiently used measures.

TURN YOUR LIVING ROOM INTOWIRELESS CHARGING STATION SOON

DABBOO RATNANI'S KIDS WITH SRK AT HIS 2017 CALENDER LAUNCH.

NEW YORK, (IANS) What if you can remotely charge your smartphone withthe flat-screen TV in your living room? If we believe a team of US engineers, turning your living room into a wireless charging station is not a far-fetcheddream. The flat-screen technology can produce a wide-range, wireless powertransfer devices, say engineers from Duke University and University of Washing-ton, adding that the technology already exists to build such a system and it is onlya matter of time to design it. "Whether its headphones, cell phones, watches oreven your mouse and keyboard, a major irritation for consumers is the hassle ofbeing tethered to cords to recharge batteries," said David Smith, professor at Duke."They always run dry at the worst possible moment. Our proposed system wouldbe able to automatically and continuously charge any device anywhere within aroom, making dead batteries a thing of the past," Smith wrote in a paperposted on the arXiv pre-print e-repository. Some wireless charging systemsalready exist to help power speakers, cell phones and tablets. The problem todate has been that the antennas in a wireless power transfer system wouldneed to be able to focus on any device within a room. The solution proposedby Smith and his colleagues relies on metamaterials - a synthetic materialcomposed of many individual, engineered cells that together produce prop-

erties not found in nature. "Imagine you have an electromagnetic wave frontmoving through a flat surface made of thousands of tiny electrical cells," saidSmith. "If you can tune each cell to manipulate the wave in a specific way,you can dictate exactly what the field looks like when it comes out on theother side," he explained. According to the results, a flat metamaterial deviceno bigger than a typical flat-screen television could focus beams of micro-wave energy down to a spot about the size of a cell phone within a distanceof up to 10 metres. It should also be capable of powering more than onedevice at the same time. "The ability to safely direct focused beams ofmicrowave energy to charge specific devices, while avoiding unwantedexposure to people, pets and other objects, is a game-changer for wirelesspower," said co-author Matt Reynolds from the University of Washington.Smith has used this principle to create the world's first cloaking device thatbends electromagnetic waves around an object held within. To achieve thison a big scale, a powerful, low-cost electromagnetic energy source wouldneed to be developed. "I think building a system like this, which could beembedded in the ceiling and wirelessly charge everything in a room, is avery feasible scheme," Smith noted.

Beginner's guide to glowing skinNEW DELHI, (IANS) Get glowing healthy skin by using skincare products with ingredients like humectants, says anexper t. Rohit Batra, dermatologist at Dermaworld Skin Clinic, has rolled out tips that will help to revive and maintain thenatural glow of skin:* A moisturiser is the lifeline for a healthy skin. But if itcontains skin repairing humectants, it can improve the hy-dration of your skin. Humectants like glycerin and propy-lene glycol pull water and reduce wrinkles and dry skin.* Don't ignore the eye area as it reflects the signs of ageingwith wrinkles, dark circles and eye bags. Use an eye creameveryday, especially at night so that the active ingredientspresent in the cream nourish the skin from within.* Apar t from an even skin tone and texture, retinoids aregreat to reduce wrinkles, fine lines and shrink pores. Ret-inol induced skin care products boost collagen and evensout the skin discolouration within four weeks.* Eliminate bar soaps from your skincare routine. The bind-ers that hold the bar together are highly alkaline with highPh balance that strip of all the moisture from your skin andmakes it dull, dry and totally drained. Invest in a good facewash or a liquid lotion.* Replacing your cotton pillowcases with silk ones can defi-nitely change your game. Since silk fabric doesn't absorbmoisture, it lets your moisturiser stick to your face and keepsyour skin soft and smooth.* Use high-quality cosmetics and brands that are best foryour skin and offer multiple benefits.

Rogers Real Estate Development Limited revealsplans for Mississauga’s tallest building

Striking tower designed by CORE Architects set to anchor $1.5 billion master-planned community, M City

Soaring 60 storeys from the corner of Burnhamthorpe Road andConfederation Parkway, M City’s flagship tower will emerge as thedefining landmark of Mississauga’s downtown core and the city’s

tallest building. The first of 10 towers in a $1.5 billion, master-plannedcommunity, M City will leave an indelible mark on Mississauga’s skylinein both scale and design.“Mississauga has reached an inflection point and we recognize that wehave a significant role to play in how this city continues to evolve,” says EdwardRogers, whose family’s private holding company, Rogers Real Estate DevelopmentLimited, is the owner of the project. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime oppor tunity to playan active role in shaping the future of a city.”Urban Capital Proper ty Group was selected to lead the development ofthefirst phase of M City, having first assisted Rogers Real EstateDevelopment Limited over the past several years to win the City ofMississauga’s approval of the master plan for the whole 15-acrecommunity.Conceived by CORE Architects, who won a design competition for theproject, M City’s undulating geometry results from a unique application ofseven floor plates that twist the building as it rises. It’s a continuation of anew era of design that was first introduced to Mississauga with AbsoluteTowers. “Mississauga’s ambition served as our motivation. The city iscarving out a special por tion of Burnhamthorpe Road that housesCelebration Square, The Living Ar ts Centre, Square One and the LRT, andturning it into a memorable downtown core” says Babak Eslahjou, who isleading the design team on behalf of CORE Architects. All amenities, common areas and suites for the project were crafted by theaward-winning interior design firm Cecconi Simone, who drew inspirationfrom the architecture’s fluid form and dynamic geometry.“It was impor tant that the interiors and amenities achieved the sameattributes as the architecture: fluidity, movement, excitement. Floorfinishes wrap up walls, planes are folded and twisted, sunlight andar tificial light are manipulated to enhance the spaces,” says ElaineCecconi, par tner, Cecconi Simone.Future residents are treated to a four-season outdoor amenity space. Onhot summer days, families can cool down at the kids play zone and splashpad or poolside on chaises under umbrellas. In the winter, the amenityterrace transforms into a rooftop skating rink—a first for the GTA.“An iconic project of this caliber would find success in any urban centre inany country,” says Mark Reeve, par tner, Urban Capital Group. “From thestriking design to the sophisticated interiors, and our future-proofedapproach to integrating technology, we are raising the bar with each facetof this project”.M City is Mississauga’s tallest tower at 60 storeys, with 784 units rangingfrom 400 sq.ft. to 1,300 sq. ft. NEW MODEL TO HELP UNHOOKPEOPLE FROM SOCIAL MEDIA

VIN DIESEL WITH DEEPIKA PADUKONE ON HIS ARRIVAL IN INDIA.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Likehealth care providers dealwith smoking or alcoholismcases, internet addictionneeds the same approach tohelp online hookers cut theirtime on social media, re-searchers repor t. To addressthis, a team of researchershas developed a frameworkusing a theory known ascognitive dissonance which isthe discomfort felt by thosewhose actions conflict with theirbeliefs.Isaac Vaghefi, Assistant Profes-sor from Binghamton Universityand Hamed Qahri-Saremi,Assistant Professor at DePaulUniversity, developed a modelshowing that the degree of users'cognitive dissonance can make a

difference in their willingness toquit online addiction. "Disso-nance is what we need to workon and what we need to helpincrease for users to make surethat they will do some action tolimit their control," said Vaghefi.Vaghefi tested the model on datacollected from 226 students atBinghamton University who saidhow much they were intending toeither stop or continue theirusage of social networking sites. The findings show that a plausibleway to help individuals to reduce orquit usage is to increase theircognitive dissonance. Making usersaware of their addiction, in particularthe consequences on personal, social, and academic livescaused by addiction, in-creases their cognitive

dissonance about theirbehaviour."People have already lookedat the role of guilt in regard totechnology use and how wecan change it," noted Vaghefi. It's through cognitive disso-nance that a negative emo-tional state of mind that, oncecreated, can actually have animpact on the actualbehaviour and intention ofpeople to stop or discontinuetheir usage habit. "Oncepeople see those negativeconsequences, they will acton them and will be motivatedto exer t self-control," saidVaghefi who presented thepaper at the 50th HawaiiInternational Conference onSystem Sciences recently.
