This document will demonstrate the history of illustration and graphic design throughout the past and will discuss it in wider context.

In this poster Xavier Esclusa implements aspects of environment in with the design. Xavier Esclusa is a professional Graphic Designer that educated in Barcelona and has worked in Ibiza and Brazil in multiple different advertising agencies. Currently he works as an Art director for his own company (http://twopots-design.com/) it is inspiring how an individual can run an independent self-run company and produce such professional work. The design and art is interesting and eye catching as it used the colour to portray a certain emotion to the viewer. This poster related to my current C+D work as I am designing and constructing graphic design posters that have an environmental connection with trees. The different layering and textiles were also interesting as the layers created shadows on the textile.

Figure 2. From Pillars to Posts (Isabel, Alfredo Aquilizan – 2018) “From Pillars to Posts: Project Another Country” is an installation art piece located in the Auckland art gallery. Inspired by artists Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, it explores aspects of community, family and homemaking. It materializes recycled cardboard boxes to construct a model city. It uses art making to prompt conversations about what makes a home. Both the idea and art piece is interesting as the art reflected many different elements of shapes creating different shadows that cast across the room. The pillars were constructed and created by the community which may add different art styles to the art piece. This installation connected with my research interests as I am very passionate in implementing and using nature to create design and artwork. Natural elements in artwork not only helps make aware of the environment to the viewers and public but also looks modern and create a professional sense in the artwork.

Figure 3. General Dynamics - 1955 Graphic designer Erik Nitsche is an iconic artist from the 40’s. His work in graphic design included film, magazine covers, exhibitions, posters and many more wide ranges of advertising mediums. The wide range of posters were very diverse and interesting as they were eye catching and well designed. They were well designed to the point of similar designs could be seen in today's world of design and illustration. The range of posters can be used to for different creative ideas and solutions that can be utilized in today’s generation of art and design. They provide inspiration and motivation to create new designs that implement others artists styles with my own to create new ranges of posters. Each poster created a different environment and portrayed different emotions. Although most of the works included light subtle colours the objects and elements of different materials used within the design makes each individual work unique and tell a different story. Inspired by Erik Nitsche, Seymour Chwast is an internationally known and recognized art director and illustrator. He has been awarded the AIGA medal and has been inducted into the Art Club Hall of fame. Seymour Chwast founded Pushpin studios in collaboration with Milton Glaser and Edward Sorel in 1954. The studio quickly gain a following and good reputation for its remarkable design and illustration work. The mix of various different colours and textiles that were used in the works were very interesting as they generate different shadows and shapes to portray various emotions and environments. The illustrations and designs were also very eye catching and raised questions to what the object could be. Is art piece show relation to the research interest as I’m interested in the world of design and the works from Seymour Chwast as well as from Pushpin studios will be useful information and inspiration to design individual works for future careers. As I am still new to implementing illustration and textile to design, posters similar to Seymour Chwast would be very useful to be used as an exemplar for future works and art pieces.

Figure 5. First Impressions – Edward Harker, 1865 “First Impressions” by Edward Harker is a watercolour art piece that displays the overlooked view of the Auckland region in the 19th century. This artwork brings awareness to the construction and changes happening in today’s world because of the drastic changes that are made visible thanks to this amazing art piece. There is a relationship between the art and environmental landscapes that create the unique atmosphere of the painting. The younger generation of artists can observe the landscape shown here and implement it into art and design of today’s generation of art. Edward Harker uses different variations of colours and shades to create the different tones used in the close regions of the image compared to the distant view of the landscape. The use of the dark shadow in the closer regions may reflect on the shadowy forecast of the future overviewing the landscape of the past. Almost as if something bad is going to happen or it may reflect the general weather conditions of the Auckland region. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre was a painter, commercial poster artist and typeface designer. He was a student of the École des Beaux Arts in Paris France. His posters and design were recognized in Europe and the US during the 1930s. “Normandie” is one of Cassandre’s well-recognized posters of his time. The textiles used in the poster stands out as multiple tones of different colours are used to shadow and brighten certain words to appeal to the audience. The portions and positive/negative space used within the poster directed viewers the certain objects within the poster. The use of a border creates a professional layout as well as creating a frame for the image making it vivid and stand out. The use of the different shades and tones may represent pollution of the environment. It also bends the image how it allows the ship to almost pop out of the poster as if its 3 dimensional.
