Scatter Plots PowerPoint
• This PowerPoint is divided into 2 sections• Grades 4-8, Reading and Math• Grade 11, Reading and Math
• The reason for these 2 different sections is that a different methodology is used for grade 11 than is used in grades 4-8, Reading and Math.• The PSSA is not administered in grades 9 and 10.• Hence there is not consecutive grades of testing
as there are in grades 4-8, Reading and Math.
Focus of Scatter Plots
• This presentation provides a comparison among the scatter plots in Grades 4-8, and 11 Math and Reading for: o All 4-8, and 11th grades in the stateoAll 4-8, and 11th grades in the IUoall 4-8, and 11th grades in the selected district

SY09-10 Scatter PlotsGrades 4-8, Reading and Math
The PSSA-PVAAS Scatter Plots visually display the following data from the statewide distribution of PSSA results for SY09-10:
• From PSSA, the percent of students in each grade who scored proficient or advanced on the last PSSA exam. The horizontal line is the Annual Measurable Objective (AMO) target percent – the % needed to meet AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for SY09-10.
• From PVAAS, the growth value of the cohort of students in each grade – A value of 0 indicates that the cohort has experienced a year’s growth. Any value to the right of the 0 line indicates that there has been more than a year’s worth of growth. Any value to the left of the 0 line indicates that there has been less than a year’s worth of growth.
• Each dot represents a school which has been placed on the graph based on % proficient/advanced and growth/gain from PVAAS.
• The following two slides explain the meaning of each of the quadrants in each scatter plot.

2009 11th Grade ScatterplotsThe PSSA-PVAAS Scatter Plots visually display the following data from the statewide distribution of PSSA results for 2009-10:• Achievement
– The mean predicted performance of the cohort. – The actual mean performance of all students in the state is displayed for reference
•Growth– School Effect ≈ Observed Mean – Predicted Mean– Standardized School Effect = School Effect relative to its error – displays degree of
confidence
The following two slides explain the meaning of each of the regions of an 11th grade scatter plot.
