Preparation for College
Julycanbeamonthfilledwithmixedemotionsasyourstudentpreparesforcollege.Itcanbeabusyandexcitingtimeasyouandyourstudentpackandshopforschool.Ontheotherhand,itcanalsobeatimewhenfamilymembersandstudentsexperiencefeelingsofsadness,nervousness,oranxiety.Familiesshouldbeawareofthemanyemotionalupsanddownsofthistime.Increasecommunicationwithyourstudentanddiscussyourconcernsandexpectationsforthecomingmonths.Check out the parent and family website for more information and great resources: http://parentsandfamily.colostate.edu/.

Credit Cards and Student Employment
Manycollegestudentshavecreditcardsandcheckingaccounts,andhavingacreditcardforemergenciesmaybeagoodidea.Creditcardcompaniesfeelthatstudentsareagoodriskandwillinundatestudentswithapplicationsassoonastheyarriveoncampus.Creditcardsandtheirpitfallscanbecomeaseriousconcern.Talkwithyourstudentabouthowtochooseacreditcard,anddiscussthevariousinterestrates,applicationandannualfees,etc.Also,talkabouthowheorsheintendstopayforexpenses.Studentemploymenthasbeenshowntoassiststudentsinstructuringtheirtimeformoreproductivity.TheAmericanCouncilonEducationstatesthatfull-timestudentswhoworklessthan14hoursaweekaremorelikelytostayincollegethanthosewhoworkmorethan15hoursaweekorwhodon’tworkatall.

Communication and Involvement
Youhaveanewroleasaparentorfamilymemberofacollegestudent;youarebecomingamentorforyourstudent.Heorshewillbeencounteringadultresponsibilitiesandchoicesandyoucanbecomeatrustedadviserintheprocessofmakingthosedecisions.Anessentialpieceofmentoringiseffectivecommunication.Trytolistenwithoutevaluationorjudgment.Listenwithout“fixing”theproblem.Takenoticeofverbalandnonverbalbehavior.Askingopenendedquestionswillencouragedialogueandassistwiththeadjustmenttothesenewroles.Askyourstudentaboutinvolvementoncampus.Researchindicatesthatstudentswhoareinvolvedoncampusaremoreinvestedintheircollegeexperience,havehighergrades,andarebetterpreparedforlifeaftergraduation.Atremendousamountoflearningtakesplaceoutsideoftheclassroom.

Coming Home for Winter Break
Decemberisahecticmonthforyourstudent.Whenfinalexamsarefinished,manystudentsheadhomeforthewinterbreak.Theymayhaveconcernsabouttheirfamiliesandhowtheywilladjusttoroutinesathome.Itisimportanttodiscussexpectationswithyourstudentbeforehe/shereturnshomeforwinterbreak.Prepareyourselfandotherfamilymembersthatthestudentwhoreturnsmaynotbethestudentyousentofftocollege.Itmayhelptorenegotiatecurfewhoursandfamilyresponsibilities.Itisanimportanttimeofadjustmentforeveryoneasyourfamilygrowsandchanges.Discussionsandfamilymeetingsbeforeandafterthestudentreturnscaneasetheadjustmentforallfamilymembers.AlsonotethatsomestudentschoosetoremaininFortCollinsoverwinterbreaktoworkand/orsavemoney.Talkwithyourstudentaboutthesedecisionsaswell.

Changing Majors and Possible Internships
Nowthatyourstudenthascompletedfallsemestercourses,changingmajorsmaybeonhis/hermind.Thisoftencreatesworryandconcernonthepartofbothyouandyourstudent.Choosingamajorisadifficultprocess.Thiscanbeagoodopportunityforyourstudenttoexploreinterestsanddeterminewhathe/shereallywantstostudy.Yourstudentmayalsobenefitfromaninternshiporotheremploymenttohelpdeterminecareeroptions.Nationalstudiesestimatethatstudentschangetheirmajorsseveraltimesduringtheircollegeyears.Itisimportanttorememberhowever,thatstudentsaremorethantheirmajors.Thebestwaytoprepareforacareeristogetasoundeducationandgaincareer-relatedexperiencethroughinternships,communityservice,part-timejobsandcampusinvolvement.EncourageyourstudenttocontactanacademicadviserandtheCareerCentertoexplorethevarietyofavailableoptions.

volunteerparentsandfamilieswhoserveasliaisonstoColoradoStateUniversityandrepresentparentsandfamilymembersofundergraduatestudents.BroughttoyoubytheParentsFund,theAssociationmeetsregularlytodiscussissues,learnmoreaboutUniversityprogramsanddevelopmentsaffectingstudents,andassistinplanningprogramsandeventsthatinvolveCSUparentsandfamilies.
RAMFAM’sprimarygoalsaretosupportfamiliesandstudents;enhancetheconnectionbetweenfamilies,studentsandtheuniversityadministration;providefeedbacktotheUniversityonstudentandfamilyissues;communicatefamilyconcernstoelectedgovernmentalofficials;andassistwiththerecruitmentandretentionofstudentsandRAMFAMAssociationmembers.
Duringeachmeeting,wecreateprogrammingbasedonyourfeedbackfromassessments,emailsorotherconnections.Ourextensivecampusrelationshipsallowustofindspeakersonprogramsyoufindinterestingorservicesoncampusyou’dliketolearnmoreabouttobettersupportyourstudent.Inthelastthreeyears,we’vetackledeverythingfromfinancialaidtohealthandsafetyoncampusandwecontinuetolookforwaystosharemoreinformationwithyouasfamilymembers.

ColoradoStateUniversitytakesseriouslytherisksassociatedwithunderagedrinkingand
illegaldruguse.Althoughresearchshowsalargemajorityofstudentsdonotdrinkorusedrugs,otherstudentscometocollegewithwell-establishedpatterns,increasingtheirriskforanumberofissuesincludingpooracademicperformance,relationshipviolence,accidents,addictions,depressionanddeath.ColoradoState’sprogramsaredesignedtocreateahealthyculture,reduceriskybehavior,andprovidethesupportstudentsneedtobesuccessfulatCSUandbeyond.
•Prevention–TheCSUHealthNetwork’sHealthEducationandPreventionServices,incollaborationwithonandoffcampuspartners,coordinatesacomprehensivecampusalcoholandotherdrugpreventionprogram,usingevidence-basedpractices.Severalprogramsarespecificallydesignedforfreshmanstudents.Forexample,allincomingstudentsarerequiredtocompleteastate-of-the-art,web-basedpreventionprogramcalledAlcoholEdu.
•early intervention –Theseprogramsaredesignedforthestudentexperiencingmildtomoderatenegativeimpactsofalcoholandotherdruguse.Studentslearnskillsnecessarytocopewiththepressuresofcollegeandmakehealthierchoices.TheseservicescanbearrangedthroughtheCSUHealthNetwork’sCounselingServices.
•treatment –Unfortunately,somestudentsexperiencesignificantproblemswithalcohol/otherdrugabuseoraddiction.Forthosestudents,gettingtheproperleveloftreatment,attheappropriatetime,iscriticalforacademicandlifesuccess.Tomeetthisneed,theCSUHealthNetwork’sCounselingServices’DAYProgram(Drugs,AlcoholandYou)
isthenationalleaderinon-campus,out-patienttreatmentforstudentsexperiencingsubstanceabuseanddual-diagnosisproblems.
