february 2020
Greeting from Weledeh!
We are so happy to back outside for outdoor recess! We had a long stretch of indoor recess and while we really like our slow start in the mornings, it’s really nice to be able to get outside at recess. Be sure to follow us on twitter, facebook or instagram to see all the cool things we get up to. Check out #weledehfamily!
This month, we had a lovely Epiphany liturgy with our super cute Kindergarten Wise Men, a fantastic literacy night, and a number of new staff join us! We’d like to welcome Mr. Phil Dillion in grade ½, Ms. Meaghan Harris in Grade 1, Ms. Roberta Giroux as a classroom assistant, Ms. Alex McBride as a classroom assistant, Mr. Mark Bennett as a literacy support teacher. If you see some new faces in our halls, be sure to say hi! They’re all fantastic additions to our #dreamteam.
A few things we want to let you know about this month: Our February PAC meeting is February 5 @ 12:00 in the library (lunch will be served). We have photo retakes on February 5 as well. Hockey Day in Canada is visiting us on February 7, so be sure to encourage your children to wear their jerseys! We will be celebrating Indigneous Language Month all month as well with lots of great activities, so watch for notices about upcoming events. Jr. Cager begins on Feb. 20 and we also have a STIP Day and PD day on Feb. 20-21.
We will be ending off the month and beginning Lent on February 26 with our Ash Wednesday Mass at the school, which all are invited to join us for. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know at 873-5591 or at [email protected].

Dressing for the cold — Tips from AboutKidsHealth
Being outdoors in winter is safer and more enjoyable when everyone is dressed properly. Discover tips from AboutKidsHealth for dressing properly for the cold to stay warm and dry.
Checking the weather forecastThe chances of getting wet from snow or freezing rain increase when the temperature is just above or just below freezing. This is because the air holds more moisture at the freezing point than when the temperature is very cold.
Being aware of the weather forecast and considering activities of the day can help to determine how to dress to stay warm and dry. For example, if children will be very active, they should wear layers so they have the option of removing layers to avoid sweating. If there will be snow or freezing rain, outer layers should be waterproof. Staying dry is an important part of staying warm and preventing cold weather injuries because moisture can make the body lose heat more quickly.
Why and how to wear layers
Children should wear three layers over their arms, legs and torso when going out into the cold:
An inner (base) layer to help move moisture away from the body A middle layer for insulation An outer layer that will provide water and wind protection
Wearing layers allows children to adjust to changing weather conditions and their own activities. Layers are also looser, allowing better blood circulation, which helps to maintain body temperature.
Layering applies to hands and feet too. Wear two pairs of socks: a thin polyester sock against the skin and a thicker sock over that. Children can also wear a thin pair of gloves with thicker, waterproof mitts over them.
More ways to stay warm and dry
Parents and caregivers can find more tips for staying warm and dry outdoors in the winter, including which layers should cover the arms, legs and torso, how to adjust clothing for activity, and which parts of the body are the main sources of heat loss, in the AboutKidsHealth article, Dressing for the cold.
AboutKidsHealth is SickKids’ health-education website and features more than 3,500 articles on a range of health topics. For more information on dressing for the cold and other health topics, visit www.aboutkidshealth.ca.
