SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON 42 TOPIC: THE NEW COVENANT VERSUS THE OLD COVENANT

TEXT: HEB. 9:1-28

M/VERSE: ROM. 8:2

AIM: This lesson is to explain what a covenant is and to further explain why God sent His Son

Jesus Christ to the world to institute the new covenant in preference to the first Old Covenant.

LESSON PLAN:

1. What is a Covenant?

2. What are the main features of the Old Covenant?

3. What are the main features of the New Covenant?

4. How do you live in the New Law?

1. A Covenant is an irrevocable agreement made between God and His people. For various

covenants read (Gen. 6:18, Gen. 17:2-18, Gen. 28:13-14, 2Sam. 23:5, Ex.20: 1-17, John 3:16,

Heb. 9:15, Jer. 31:31-34).

2. The old covenants or the Law of Moses is called the Law of Death. This is because it is

God's law that ruled spiritually dead men (Rom. 8:2). The old covenant commanded men to

love God. For a contrast of old and new covenants, read (Gal. 3:13-14). When Paul became born

again, he became a child of God and passed onto the New Covenant.

3. The first manifestation of the New Covenant is Love (John 13:34-35). This is Agape love.

Jesus fulfilled all the laws; ceremonies, priesthood of the Old Covenant and set it aside. That is

when he said on the cross “it is finished” (John 19:30). Jesus is the high priest of the new

covenant and we are the holy priesthood and the royal priesthood. Under the New Covenant

the rules for our daily walk are found in (John 15:9-10, 1Cor. 13, 1John 4:8, Rom. 13:10). Under

this law, man becomes a lover of God.

4. Jesus laid down His life for us, poured out His life. We are to live for the brethren and

pour ours out in love. 1John 3:17-23 explains why prayer is not answered, the sick often not

healed. We have neither walked in love nor borne the burden of the weak. We are to take

Jesus' place and meet the needs of others in distress. Gal. 6:2 says bear ye one another's

overload. Do you want to be a soul winner? Do you want to be a teacher of the word? Except

love rule your life, you cannot be suitable for anything and cannot be a blessing to the world

(1John 4:7-9).

CONCLUSION: Why not repent and be a Christian? Read your bible daily.
