I:PULAU KAPAS
Pulau Kapas means Cotton Island in Malay and this peculiar name isattributed to the pure white beaches that are the trademark of thisisland. The name comes as no surprise once you have walked alongthese beaches: the sand is soft and white and slopes gently into the
crystal clear water.
Kapas Island is popular is because of the excellentsnorkelling in thewaters surrounding the island. There is an abundance of corals and
other marine life, visibility is good and the water is shallow andcalm. Because the coral is mainly around the rocky edges of the
island, you can still go swimming off the beautiful beaches, even atlow tide.
Kapas Island may be easy to reach, but it is much harder to leavethis island after being immersed in its beauty.

About a century ago, Port Dickson town was a part of the
ocean, during the high water tide, the water might raise upto the railway near Jalan Lama. In those time, both streetsof Jalan Baru and Jalan Raja Aman Shah did not yet exist.
In the earlier time, Port Dickson was called "Tanjong" inMalay language that means "cape". The oldest shoplots were
the four situated at Jalan Lama. There was also carbonmine at first mile of the coast road (Jalan Pantai), and
therefore Port Dickson was also called "Arang" in Malaylanguage that means "charcoal".
In those time, the British have foreseen the great potentialof Port Dickson, thus built a harbor in replacement for theexisting port in Pengkalan Kempas. Because the in-chargeofficer's name was Dickson, thereafter it was named Port
Dickson until today. In the picture, Jalan Baru was built in
1927. There were only 5 shop lots counting from today'sStandard Chartered Bank .

Little was known about this earthen wall (Historic Site #297) until five excavationswere made from 1983-88 by the Seoul National University's museum after the area
was selected for construction of the 1988 Olympic facilities. The fortress wasrestored on the basis of the knowledge gained through those excavations. The wall
was built with earth sometime in the early days of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.-A.D.660) along the natural contour of the land made by the shore of this tributaryof the Han River. Traces of palisades were found along the northern end for addeddefense. This part was doubly reinforced by a moat, and the overall function of thefortress seems to have been defense against attacks from the north. Sites of pit
dwellings, storage pits, and tombs with jar coffins were located. Excavatorsfound Baekje earthenware, fishing books, weapons, stone mortars, and other relics, giving a glimpse of how people lived during the days when thePaekche capital was in
this area.

The temple complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420during the reign of the Yongle Emperor , who was also
responsible for the construction of the Forbidden City inBeijing. The complex was extended and renamed Temple of
Heaven during the reign of the Jiajing Emperor in the 16thcentury. The Jiajing Emperor also built three other
prominent temples in Beijing, the Temple of Sun in the east ,the Temple of Earth in the north , and the Temple of
Moon in the west . The Temple of Heaven was renovated inthe 18th century under the Qianlong Emperor . Due to the
deterioration of state budget, this became the last large-scalerenovation of the temple complex in the imperial time. The temple was occupied by the Anglo-French Alliance
during the Second Opium War . In 1900, during the BoxerRebellion , the Eight Nation Alliance occupied the temple
complex and turned it into the force's temporary commandin Beijing, which lasted for one year. The occupation
desecrated the temple and resulted in serious damage to thebuilding complex and the garden. Robberies of templeartifacts by the Alliance were also reported. With the
downfall of the Qing, the temple complex was leftunmanaged. The neglect of the temple complex led to the
collapse of several halls in the following years.

The reason why Hangzhou enjoys the great honor lies inthe fact that it has West Lake. With an average depth ofjust 5 feet the lake is held in the embrace of hilly peaks
on three sides. This water wonderland has been an attraction for centuries and it is small wonder that it
was a favourite imperial retreat. The lake and itsenvirons have all the elements of a traditional Chinese
garden but on a grand scale. The natural setting ofstrangely shaped peaks, serene forests and springs, dense foliage and a myriad of blossoms especially in
springtime are enhanced by a treasury of sculpture and architectural features.
The best seasons to visit West lake are spring and summerwhen there are lotus blossoms all over the lake.
The reason of its No. 4 place is that Hangzhou is veryclose to Shanghai, only a couple of hours travel by
train. It's a perfect next stop after you have enjoyed thebeautiful scene on the Bund
