Study On Alternative Energy Resources

And Its many uses

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating , solar photovoltaic's , solar thermal energy , solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.

SOLAR ENERGY

Page 3: Study on Alternative Energy Resources

There are currently three common ways to generate power from sunlight:

You can use solar cells to directly generate electricity from sunlight. These cells get a little better and a little cheaper every year, but they still are fairly expensive on a cost per watt basis.

You can use the sun to generate heat, use the heat to create steam and use the steam to turn a generator that produces electricity.

You can use sunlight to create heat that forces air to rise up a tower and then use the resulting wind in the tower to drive wind turbines, as shown in How solar towers work

Solar panels (PV) are completely solid state and require no maintenance.

Solar panels have a long lifespan of 20-30 years.

They emit neither pollutants nor radioactive waste so they can safely be used indoors.

Solar technology requires no fuels. Photovoltaic solar technology produces

neither noise nor vibration.

Advantages of Solar Power System

05

Page 6: Study on Alternative Energy Resources

The manufacturing cost of solar technology is high.

Solar technology in general is expensive to install.

The cost of electricity from central solar power plants is high.

Solar panel efficiency is usually low.

Disadvantages of Solar Power system

Photovoltaic systems convert solar energy directly into electricity. They have efficiencies near 10%.

Generates free energy from the sun. Has no moving parts. Non-polluting energy. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are modular. Systems have a long life & durability. Cells

last 25-30 years. PV cells make no noise and give off no

exhaust.

Wind is used to turn wind turbines, which turns a generator, to make electricity.

FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION: 1.Need lots of open land. 2.at least 20kmph wind velocity is needed.3. lots of manpower for setting up wind farm and maintenance

GENERAL PROBLEMS 1.storms 2.uprooting of trees 3.cause dust storms etc.

Problems of Wind Energy

15

Page 16: Study on Alternative Energy Resources

ADVANTAGES

1. The use of wind turbines does not generate pollution or radioactive waste like most other forms of electricity generation do.

2. Wind can also generate power for large numbers of people, using larger turbines connected to an electrical grid.

3. Another one of its advantages is that this type of power generation does not consume any non-renewable resources, like coal, natural gas, or oil

DISADVANTAGES

1. Another of the disadvantages is that they can be damaged in thunderstorms.

2. The blades of wind turbines can hit birds who attempt to fly between them.

3. Some turbines produce noise.

Biomass is natural energy. Common natural materials such as wood, grass, animal (or human) waste and natural gases are all examples of biomass.

Biomass

18

Page 19: Study on Alternative Energy Resources

1. Trees (wood fuels, twigs, leaves, plant residues)

2. Agricultural Residues (paddy husk, bran, jute sticketc.) and

3. Livestock (animal dung).

The main sources of biomass fuels

19

Page 20: Study on Alternative Energy Resources

High cycle efficiency. Very high turbine efficiency (up to 90%) Low mechanical stress of the turbine, due to

low peripheral speed Very long operational life of the machine. No water treatment system is necessary
