As the life of a college student, there have been many encounters with my three favorite items we love to consume: alcohol, fast foods, and the occasional dose of Vitamin C. (In the form of trash can punch, of course.) But do we realize exactly how much of this we consume, and in fact how bad it is for you?
Let me break it down for you. You go out at least once a week, if not, two or three times. You have about fi ve beers when you’re out, among many shots. On your way home, you stop at a typical fast food place with friends and munch out. Have you counted the calories yet? With all of that, you’ve had 550 calories with beer alone, 56 calories each shot of Vodka, and about 600 in that juicy burger on your way home. (Without fries and a soda.) How does that sound?
Th at’s exactly what our hottie on the cover gives up secrets to. Donovan Marshall is proof that healthy is sexy, so get on board! Read on his new way of life and healthy living. He has some great tips!

IF YOU COULD SLEEP WITH A CELEBRITY,WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
You Asked... Study Breaks Staff answers your burning questions.
Julie, What are good low-impact workouts that still work?
-Isa D’Aniell
Can low impact workouts help you burn calories and lose weight as well as high impact moves? Absolutely! Despite what some people may say, low-impact exercises can get your heart rate into your target heart rate zone. You just have to work a little harder. Yoga, pilates, spin-ning, walking and swimming are a few of the popular ones.
Alex, What is the best new diet worth trying?
-Amber Lankford
Honestly, I don’t believe in diets. Th ey are destined for failure. You starve yourself for a week or a month and then end up gaining the weight back. Each result depends on the individual. A “diet” needs to become your lifestyle. In my experience, eating things you like but in smaller portions and working out is the best way to lose the weight you want and keep it off .
Jennifer, Does the Seven Day Bikini Diet from the March issue REALLY work?
-Theresa Clark
Like I said before, I swear by it. I lost 10 pounds before my brother’s wedding by strictly following the diet. However, like any other crash diet, exercise and continuing to eat healthy is required to keep the weight off after you go off the diet.
Abby, What is your worst unhealthy vice?
-Bernadette Creasey
Donuts. Absolutely. I am a sucker for every type and brand - from national Krispy Kreme’s to local sugary confections like Gordough’s - I’ve had them all. Th e worst part is, I have found absolutely no substitution for their sugary goodness, so I am left with an incurable weakness for glazed donuts hot out of the oven.

Are you a fan of Canadians? Post-hardcore bands? If you said yes to either of those questions then you’ve probably already heard of Silverstein, and even if you said no to either of those questions, you’ll probably still like Silverstein. This post-hardcore band from Burlington, Ontario has been around for 11 years and has toured with bands such as A Day To Remember, Blessthefall, Pierce The Veil, August Burns Red, Enter Shikari, and the list goes on. There is not a single reason to miss this show, (even if it is fi nals week) especially since it’s on Cinco de Mayo. ¡Olé! Pound your best bottle of José before the show and take a cab over to the White Rabbit for what is sure to be an awesome show that will make you “Smile In Your Sleep.”

Good Golly Miss Molly! Catcher Molly Fichtner is off to a hot start in the 2011 softball season. She has 25 RBI (only two others have double digit RBI) and is batting a solid .434 as of March 28. She leads the team in nearly every offensive statistic and will need to stay hot if the Roadrunner softballers want to approach a .500 record.
The Roadrunner basketball squad won their first NCAA tourna-ment game on March 16th, albeit it was aided by the new 68-team format. UTSA downed Alabama State for the right to play mighty Ohio State in the “second” round of March Madness. Sadly, the Roadrunners didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with a Buck-eye squad that was ranked #1 for a good portion of the 2011 sea-son. The Roadrunners started the game well, with senior guard Devin Gibson leading the way.
He finished with 24 points and four steals in the game, although a good chunk of his scoring was with the Buckeyes’ regulars rest-ing on the bench in the second half. Gibson shot a very respect-able 50% from the field, while the rest of the team struggled. In fact, no other Roadrunner topped six points in the 75-46 loss. The Roadrunners will certainly miss Gibson’s leadership, scoring and ball-thievery next season. Gibson averaged double digits in each of his four seasons here.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the bar?I have been working for this company for almost 10 years. Th e entertainment may change, the people may come and go, but the one thing that stays the same is the feeling of home when you’re there. My favorite thing about Roxy’s is the friendly feel you get when you walk in the door. People say it reminds them of the TV show Cheers. It really is a place where everyone knows your name.
Q: What is the best night to come in and why?Any night at Roxy’s can show you a good time. All the bartenders are friendly and can give you great customer service. I’m usually there Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, so come by and check us out!
Q: What’s the worst pick-up line you’ve heard a dude say while bartending?Worst pick up lines I’ve heard were, “I forgot my phone number. Can I have yours?” and “You look great in that outfi t, but you would look even better on me.”
Q: What’s the “in” drink to drink at your bar these days?Th e preferred beer that we serve the most at Roxy’s is Dos XX. Everyone wants it. Don’t forget to dress it please, with salt and lime. Another favorite drink often asked is anything ending with Bomb. Jager Bomb, Vegas Bomb, Tuaca Bomb, or even an Irish Car Bomb.
Q: If a costumer was being rude and obnoxious, you would probably:I would not spit in the drink, although bartenders do think about it. I would probably forget the alcohol altogether and throw the obnoxious person out.
Q: Favorite Shot?Oh this is easy. Everyone knows I love Jager Bombs!

It’d be hard to pin one single genre on John Laws when he picks up an instrument, or in-struments for that matter. Th e John Laws Band is a solo project featuring John Laws from Th e Woodlands, Texas. Spending most of his time perfecting his craft, John has traveled across Texas playing his music includ-ing local venues like Wake the Dead Coff ee House and Tantra Coff ee House. Claiming to fi nd inspiration from almost every possible genre out there, John Laws takes a unique blend of ex-perimental folk, with a splash of acoustic alternative to mesmer-ize viewers as he expresses his life’s passion through a mighty musical medium.
How long have you been playing music? Music has been involved in my life since I was a young boy. I always wanted to play electric guitar. I was in multiple choirs during middle school, and I also
played trombone in the school’s wind ensemble. Around high school, I started getting into writing my own music while utilizing my electric guitar. My family has always supported my passion for music, and I’m very thankful for that.
Where do you fi nd inspi-ration for writing music? Writing music is just like fall-ing in love. Love falls into your lap when you least expect it. I’ve found myself in countless situ-ations where something has in-spired me, but I’ve had no way to act upon the idea. Something about me that not many people know is that I’m mostly inspired when taking a shower. Many of the songs I’ve written have start-ed in the bathroom.
Which bands did you listen to growing up?Growing up, I mostly listened to a variety of original scores and soundtracks to movies and video
games. I’ve always had a spe-cial place in my heart for the nostalgia that playing video games and watching movies can bring.
How did you get into the music scene? I love the energy that fi lls me when sharing stories and melodies with others. Th ere’s nothing like playing and cap-tivating a group of complete strangers with something you’ve created out of silence.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened at a show?Once, I had a sound engineer critique my singing style. At that point in my writing, I tended to sang quietly with a very “airy” voice. Th e engineer kept saying, “Sing louder! Sing louder!” It was very discouraging, but I let it slide. Th at was a pretty weird show.

Always on the go, Donovan Marshall fi ts in a workout everyday. As soon as he
rolls out of bed to the minute before falling asleep, he spends spare time at the gym. Th is routine wasn’t always scheduled though. Growing up, Donovan was on the heavier side. His way of life needed to change, and fast, because college was just around the corner.
The Build UpComing from a single-parent household, Donovan’s mother prepared home cooked meals that were loaded with grease. “She just worked so much that she made the quick and greasy foods for me,” says Donovan. Having this unhealthy diet led him to be the chubby kid in class around the 5th grade. His weight escalated from there. His habits became increasingly worse as he got older. Whether it be pizza, hamburgers, red meat, and sodas especially, he ate it all. Fast foods consumed his life.
High SchoolWhen he reached 270 poundsjunior year of high school, Donovan knew that he should start to lose weight if he planned on participating in extra curricular activities. “I didn’t want to be the fat kid on the sidelines.” So Donovan decided to try out for the cheer squad at his high school. After making it on the team, he began to build close relationships with the ladies in high school, but none were ever classifi ed as, “Th e One.” Th e ladies viewed
him as someone to protect them, rather than being their high school sweetheart. “Weight didn’t seem to be the problem, because I have a loveable personality,” says Donovan. He was really excited to participate in his high school’s cheer squad, where he not only developed the majority of friendships with his teammates, but also was forced to shape up.
Breaking PointBeing a family oriented person, Donovan holds his family and those close to him dear to his heart. “I realized that I needed to lose weight when I saw some of my family member’s health deteriorate. I chose to make better food selections, cut down carbs, eat more green vegetables, and exercised daily—always following with a gallon of water.” Hard work and determination was a huge factor in leading Donovan down the right path
to lose weight. ChangesCollege is another chapter in life where you can create a new image for yourself. You have the opportunity to change for the better and become someone diff erent than who you were in high school. You make new friends, you make your own schedule, and most of all, you make your own food choices. College had a huge infl uence on Donovan’s decision to become fi t and healthy. He stayed away from his mother’s home cooked meals, and changed his eating habits all together. His new diet consisted of smaller portions, no eating out at fast food chains, no drinking sodas, and strictly eating dinner before 8pm.
InspirationDonovan used self-motivation
to change his heavy habits. He surrounded himself with others who wanted to change as well, and join the road to become healthy. “I hired a personal trainer for three months in order to assist me with obtaining my goal. He gave me valuable insight on how the mind and body can work hand in hand to achieve your goal.” Th at goal was defi nitely reached. Donovan lost about 95 pounds.
ReactionsReturning home after his fi rst year of college was a huge shock to Donovan’s family. Th ey were all very excited to see the pounds that he once had, gone. He’d get reactions such as, “Donovan, are you eating?” and “Why are you working out so much?” Th e best conclusion, “I just wanted to live a healthier life. I’ve committed to be fi t.”

What events are going on at Cablestock? The weekend’s lineup includes wakeboarding and wake skating competitions, live music, plenty of food and drinks, a bikini contest, opportunity to cut your hair in support of Locks for Love and a few other surprises we have up our sleeves!

Mixing talented athletes with hot babes and live music performances is what Cablestock is best known for. Texas Ski Ranch, an action and water sports facility, is the place to spend time wakeboarding, tanning, skateboarding, and learning about other sports. If you want to kick off your summer right, (and see hotties in swimwear) this is an event you can’t afford to miss out on. Study Breaks sat down with Blake Jess, TSR/Cablestock Manager to get the scoop on the biggest event before summer.

The problem most people have with races is they are lost on how to be-gin the process. If you have never run before, the idea of running long distances only to get to your destina-tion and be exhausted seems point-less. That’s what cars are for, right? Running, however, is one of the most popular recreational sports for a rea-son. But, as with most things in life, the most rewarding things are the ones that require effort. Following are tips on how to train for your fi rst 5K race safely!
PLAYLIST TO HELP YOU TRAIN• “Girlfriend” – Phoenix
• “Triple Double” – Girl Talk
• “Riot Rhythm” – Sleigh Bells
• “Boy” – Ra Ra Riot
• “Deadbeat Summer” – Neon Indian
• “Fa-Fa-Fa” – Datarock
• “Rich Girls” – The Virgins
• “Around the World” – Daft Punk • “LA Woman” – The Doors
• “Free Energy” – Free Energy
• “North American Scum” – LCD Soundsystem
WHAT YOU NEED TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING
FROM THE COUCH TO A
THE PLANFirst, make sure that you have had a lot of hydration before you run. This should be gradual rather than swigging an entire bottle of water minutes before you leave, so then your body will be able to lose water safely, but you will not have to worry about feeling the water slosh around in your stomach. So, if you are stretched and ready to run, let’s GO!
Abby Johnston, 22Major: Multimedia JournalismHometown: Huntsville
24 | MAY 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM
If you want to train for speed, replace your cross training days with sprint drills. If you run on a quarter mile track, sprint the sides (the longest parts of the track) and walk the edges for a mile. Otherwise, cross training can be any-thing from walking, biking or swimming.
STRETCHINGOne thing that new runners are unaware of is the importance of stretching. If you do not believe it, try doing a multi-mile run without stretching fi rst. Running utilizes muscles differently than many other types of exercises, and there are four areas that you should be sure to hit before starting your run. No matter how long or short your distance is for that day each stretch should be held for 10 seconds, and can be done up to 10 times. It is important to feel like your muscles are loose and relaxed, because they will be put under stress and tighten once you start your run.
QUADRICEPS
Your quadriceps are the muscles in front of your thighs. When quadriceps are stretched, you have greater mobility and leg range and it is easier to in-crease your speed.
While standing, grab hold of a stationary object to balance yourself. Use your other hand to bend your leg at the knee towards the buttocks. Make sure your hand is gripping at the ankle, and that you keep your knee parallel with your body line and DO NOT SLOUCH. Slouch-ing will null the stretch’s effectiveness.
CALVES
Calves are always the fi rst place you feel strain when running. They are what actually propel you when your feet push off of the ground, so they see a lot of action.
Find an elevated surface approxi-mately 3 or 4 inches from the ground. Rest the balls of your feet on the surface with your heel to-ward the ground, and push until you feel the stretch. Make sure that you don’t stretch the calf too hard by picking a surface that is too high, otherwise you will overwork them.
LATERAL HIP ROTATION
This is a common running stretch, but very few know what exactly they are stretching. For your information, this is the piriformis stretch, which is responsible for lateral hip rotation.
Lie on your back with your knees bent, then cross your ankle over your knee. Grab behind your thighs with both of your hands and bring your knee towards your body.
HAMSTRING
Your hamstring runs from behind your knee to your but-tocks, so pulling that muscle will take a serious toll on your speed, and even ability to run at all.
Most runners do this by standing with their leg waist high and gradually leaning forward. I fi nd it more effective, how-ever, to lie down grabbing your thigh with both hands with your knee still bent. Bring your thigh to a 90 degree angle with the ground, then slowly straighten your knee. When you become more limber you can pull your leg closer to your chest for more of a stretch.
Have a running question?
