From Deacon Conrad Wojnar Dear parishioners: Time is passing quickly. Although it seems that we have just begun the season of Lent, we are now almost to its midpoint. “Repent and believe the Good News.” Do those words that we heard when we were signed with ashes still ring in our ears and reverberate in our hearts? Lent is fundamentally a time of conversion. And conversion is fundamentally a process of becoming more and more a part of the Kingdom of God, while rejecting the glamor of evil. In fact, we should be working on our conversion each and every day of our lives, because it is so critical to our relationship with God and to our eternal happiness. Although the Church has eased Lenten fast and abstinence requirements quite a bit since the Second Vatican Council, it has never stopped insisting that penance and detachment from worldly pleasures form an important part of our Lenten practice. This is because all of us must confront the reality that we cannot lead double lives. As Scripture says, “We cannot serve both God and the flesh.” So then, what is the authentic penitential practice that draws us more and more into the Kingdom of God? Traditionally, the Church summarizes this practice as increased prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Each one of these disciplines draws us more deeply into the Kingdom of God. Prayer is essential, because it builds our relationship with God. All kinds of prayer are powerful, but mental prayer, that is, actually having an interior conversation with God is most helpful. Other aspects of prayer which are often overlooked are thanksgiving for favors received (not just the obvious ones), contrition for our sins and praising the Lord for His bountiful goodness. Fasting is often viewed as not eating or drinking, and that aspect continues to be important for those whose health and station in life permit it. However, fasting can also involve refraining from (even for just a time) various worldly pursuits and pleasures that are not in themselves bad, but which can distract us from conversion. Examples might be watching television, surfing the web, using social media sites, playing videogames, going out to dinner or making unnecessary purchases. Almsgiving can also be viewed more expansively. It should not be just a matter of re-routing some of our excess cash to a worthy cause, but, like the woman in the gospel who gave the temple treasury all she had to live on, be a radical re-assessment of what we really need to live, and an affirmation of our role as stewards of God’s gifts. In addition, this should extend to our time and talents, as we reset our priorities. This is a great time for a re-examination of our Lenten goals and a re-orientation of all aspects of our lives to the Kingdom of God. Deacon Conrad
cenar o hacer compras innecesarias. No
