News & Notes from Sondra Norder, President
I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e :
As many of you know, here at St. Paul Elder Services, we have a comprehensive portfolio of memory care programs, services, and residential living options for persons who are living with dementia. Known as our “Passages” program, that portfolio includes our Memory Clinic in partnership with the Neuroscience Group, a lending library with resources pertaining to memory loss, three support groups, a Memory Connections group, and Memory Cafes all provided through the Hoffman Memory Care Resource Center, Club Gabriel, which is our Adult Day Services program, St. Paul
Manor, which is our memory care-specific assisted living facility, and Appletree Court and Poppy Path, which are our memory care-specific neighborhoods within St. Paul Home.
At the Memory Clinic, one of our key Passages personnel, Julie Feil, MSW, LCSW, partners with a Neuroscience Group neurologist who specializes in diagnosing dementia. Once the diagnosis is made, Julie steps in and starts linking that person and his or her family to the resources they will need to remain as safe and independent as possible at home and in the community. Our support groups are geared towards persons with young-onset dementia, the spouses of persons with young-onset dementia, and care partners in general. Our Memory Connections program is largely designed to slow the progression of dementia for those who are still living at home, through evidence-based brain exercise games and therapies that keep the brain active. Our Memory Cafes are hosted in partnership with the Fox Valley Memory Project, and are designed to gather people who are living with dementia in the community together in a social setting for fun, lively events amongst friends.
Another of our Passages professionals, Keri Schreiter, COTA, manages Club Gabriel, our adult day center within which we can provide anything from bathing services in our spa to 8 hours per day, five days per week of daily respite care. Club Gabriel serves only those who are living with dementia and does not co-mingle clients who have more general cognitive deficits, creating an environment in which everyone can benefit from the meaningful activities and programming that we design.
Our entire Passages program has largely been developed and integrated into our own campus and the community by our very own Becky Reichelt, MS, CTRS, who serves as our Chief Operating Officer. Becky is a clinician by background with extensive experience and expertise in person-centered dementia care. Becky is well known as one of the region’s leading dementia care experts, and we are beyond blessed to have her and her vision of quality dementia care here at SPES.
While some other providers and operators who claim to specialize in memory care rely on either medications or gimmicks, often which are inappropriate, outdated, or proven through research to do more harm than good (“Snoezelen Rooms, shadow boxes, etc.), Becky has built SPES’ complete Passages philosophy on memory care around understanding the person as an individual and upon rigorous and continuous staff education. With support from the top down, through their extensive training and Continued on page 2

dedication to the following principles, SPES staff are hands down the most dementia-capable caregivers in the Fox Valley:
We recognize the value of encouraging personal choice and decision making, balanced with structure and routine for each person living with dementia. We make every effort to involve the person with dementia in familiar, daily tasks and activities based on their current abilities and individual life story. We understand that behavior symptoms are forms of communication for each person living with dementia. We are committed to understanding what the person is communicating and using approaches to enhance the sense of safety, comfort, and wellbeing for that individual person. We understand that a structured program of activities and engagements will increase the sense of wellbeing and quality for each person living with dementia. We recognize each person living with dementia is an individual. We are committed to following each person’s plan of care by using approaches/interventions to enhance their social, cognitive, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
We understand that teamwork and consistency is a vital component of providing dementia-specific care. We will work with the Passages Team, the person living with dementia, and family members to ensure the best quality of care.
You will not find rooms filled with bubble machines and string lights and jelly-filled placemats at St. Paul Elder Services. You will not find our staff handing out psychotropic medications to reduce “behaviors” for staff convenience. And you will not find one “memory care” living space in which any person living with dementia at any stage is cohorted together and provided with the same programming and interventions. You WILL find caregivers who have received hours and hours of training on specific approaches that are successful in making the person living with dementia feel comfortable, safe, and important. You WILL find individualized care plans, 1:1 attention and companionship, and activities that are age-appropriate and meaningful to each person. You WILL find programs, services, and living options that vary based on wherever each person is in their progression of memory loss, such that they can be in the right place at the right time, no matter their abilities or deficits.
We are blessed to be able to have the experts in Becky, Julie, and Keri that we do, and we are hopeful that Passages becomes a household name so that we can continue to help more and more of those persons who would benefit from our uniquely designed, evidence-based, PERSON-centered programming.

Farewell, Sister Sue Ann
Thursday, July 13 was Sister Sue Ann’s last day as a

Sister Sue Ann exemplifies her faith in her selfless dedication to others. She has a
heart for service and has blessed the lives of countless people!
Thank you for your laughter, smiles, and generous heart Sister Sue Ann,
we will miss you! May God bless you greatly in the coming years
