Pope Francis Corner - Misericordiae Vultus: Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy

GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE (Continued from last week) We cannot escape the Lord’s words to us, and they will serve as the criteria upon which we will be judged: whether we have fed the hungry and given drink to the thirsty, welcomed the stranger and clothed the naked, or spent time with the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-45). Moreover, we will be asked if we have helped others to escape the doubt that causes them to fall into despair and which is often a source of loneliness; if we have helped to overcome the ignorance in which millions of people live, especially children deprived of the necessary means to free them from the bonds of poverty; if we have been close to the lonely and afflicted; if we have forgiven those who have offended us and have rejected all forms of anger and hate that lead to violence; if we have had the kind of patience God shows, who is so patient with us; and if we have commended our brothers and sisters to the Lord in prayer. In each of these “little ones,” Christ himself is present. His flesh becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled… to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us. Let us not forget the words of Saint John of the Cross: “as we prepare to leave this life, we will be judged on the basis of love”.[12] 16. In the Gospel of Luke, we find another important element that will help us live the Jubilee with faith. Luke writes that Jesus, on the Sabbath, went back to Nazareth and, as was his custom, entered the synagogue. They called upon him to read the Scripture and to comment on it. The passage was from the Book of Isaiah where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and freedom to those in captivity; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour” (Is 61:1-2). A “year of the Lord’s favour” or “mercy”: this is what the Lord proclaimed and this is what we wish to live now. This Holy Year will bring to the fore the richness of Jesus’ mission echoed in the words of the prophet: to bring a word and gesture of consolation to the poor, to proclaim liberty to those bound by new forms of slavery in modern society, to restore sight to those who can see no more because they are caught up in themselves, to restore dignity to all those from whom it has been robbed. The preaching of Jesus is made visible once more in the response of faith which Christians are called to offer by their witness. May the words of the Apostle accompany us: he who does acts of mercy, let him do them with cheerfulness (cf. Rom 12:8). Joseph's Easter Dream

I had a dream Mary, like the one that you had

at Christmas. It was also about Our Son Jesus,

who, on Good Friday gave the Greatest Gift of

all to mankind - “His Life”. But in this dream

Mary, so few people understood the true

meaning of Easter.

So many people disbelieved and doubted the

Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Son

Jesus. They were looking forward to Easter as

only a break away from work - a long weekend.

Oh Mary, how the world had changed! The evil

one had deceived many of Our Son’s children.

I looked on in disbelief as both young and old

exchanged gifts of chocolate and talked of the

Easter Bunny, rather than remembering the

Great Gift of Life Our Son had given them.

They did not realise the intense suffering and

pain Jesus endured for all mankind!

Rather than spending time with Our Son, many

chose to spend their time shopping, gambling

and participating in sporting events over these

most sacred days. Unfortunately, Good

Friday had for many become just a good

holiday.

I then saw Our Son nailed to the cross,

crowned with thorns and His eyes were filled

with tears as He looked towards his Heavenly

Father and said: “Father, forgive them, for

they know not what they do.”

Mary, when I suddenly awoke from this dream,

I fervently prayed: Please, let none of what I

dreamt come true. This Easter Celebrate the

Holy Days,

not the holidays.

Persecuted Christians That those Christians who, on account of their faith, are discriminated against or are being persecuted, may remain strong and faithful to the Gospel, thanks to the incessant prayer of the Church.

With how much love Jesus looks at us! With how much love He heals our sinful heart! Our sins

never scare Him. 24 Mar

PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS

God of Joy, the joy of the Gospel is such that it cannot be taken away from us by anyone or anything.

The evils of our world - and those of the Church - must not be excuses for diminishing our commitment and our

fervour. Let us look upon them as challenges which can help us to grow.

With eyes of faith, may we see the light which your Holy Spirit always radiates in the midst of darkness,

remembering that “where sin increased, grace has abounded all the more’. (Rom 5:20).

In our own lives, help us to discern how wine can come from water and how wheat can grow

in the midst of weeds. Let us disagree with prophets of doom,

always forecasting disaster! May we always be confident that, in our times, your

divine Providence is leading us to a new order of human relations, which, by human effort, and even beyond all

expectations, are directed to the fulfilment of your designs.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

[Prayer from Pope Francis’ words ‘The Joy of the Gospel’ (Evangelii Gaudium)]

MARIST COLLEGE

Dear Parents, Caritas: Raising funds and awareness Over the last week each 1:14 has conducted a fundraising activity of some sort. Congratulations to all our students and families who have donated food and helped with these activities. It has long been the joint aims of Caritas to raise funds and raise awareness of the plight of disadvantaged communities and individuals around the world. During Lent we have been showing a number of moving videos about how Caritas has changed people’s lives. At Year 9 some of our students conducted activities to raise awareness of the plight of some individuals. Easter Over the coming days we journey through Holy Week, which is the most important time in our Liturgical year as it celebrates the central mystery of our faith: Jesus resurrection from the dead. We celebrate that we are Easter people, a community of believers that live in the hope that one day, we too will overcome death and meet Jesus in a life beyond this one. I encourage all members of our community to join in this remarkable journey from Friday to Sunday. May you feel the pain of his suffering and the joy of his resurrection. Holidays Despite being the shortest term we will have this year, I sense that all our students and staff are ready for a break from the routine of school life. May each and every member of our community have a restful and peace filled Easter. I look forward to everyone returning safely on Monday 11 April. Darren McGregor, Principal

Life’s like that… A preacher was completing a temperance sermon. With great expression he

said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river!" The congregation nodded their approval. With even greater emphasis he added, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river, too!" The people clapped and were saying "Amen." And then finally, he concluded, "And

if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river!" As he sat down, the song leader then stood up quite cautiously and

announced, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365: "Shall We Gather at the River."
