HOSPITALITY Both the First Reading and the Gospel stress the greatness of hospitality shown to the envoys of God, that is, those who are bearers of God’s word. But there is another kind of hospitality that is stressed again and again in the Bible, namely, hospitality to the stranger. Hospitality is the hallmark of a Christian. At long last winter ended and spring came. All along the street the people rejoiced. They drew back their curtains and opened up their windows. Fresh air, sunlight, and warmth poured into their homes. “Thank God for spring! Thank God for the sunshine!” they exclaimed. Just then a beggar man appeared at the end of the street. He was quickly spotted through the open windows. One by one, down the length of the street, the windows were quickly closed, the curtains silently drawn, and the locks put back on the doors. The beggar man knocked on every door on the street, but not one door opened to him. Forlornly he left the street and headed for somewhere else. No sooner had he disappeared than the curtains were pulled back again, and the windows and doors opened up once more. And again the sunshine and fresh air poured in, and all the people rejoiced. Strange how our homes are always open to receive God’s sunshine and fresh air, but not always open to receive a child of God, especially when he comes in poverty. Hospitality is a beautiful thing. But nowadays hospitality is a very different matter from what it was in the old days when nobody locked their doors. Sadly, those days are gone. Today is the day of locks, bolts, chains, peep holes, alarm systems, dogs… Yet today there is more need than ever for hospitality and friendliness. In the world today there is a lot of loneliness and there are lots of strangers and displaced people. Hospitality to a friend is no big deal There is no risk involved, and there is every likelihood that the favour will be returned. But hospitality to a stranger is a great thing. However, there is a risk involved. But Christ calls us to welcome the strangers in our midst. To be hospitable does not mean making them like us. It means accepting them as they are. This enables them to shed their strangeness, and become members of the community. If Christians retreat into ghettos where they secure themselves

and their property against those they consider as socially inferior to them, what hope is there for the world? Christ calls us to reach out. And the rewards are great. He said that even a trivial act of kindness, like giving a cup of cold water, would not go unrewarded in heaven. But there are earthly rewards too, and very great ones - the growth of understanding, friendliness, and co-operation, things our neighbourhoods are crying out for. This is the kind of spring we ourselves can cause to visit our homes and streets, a spring that will banish from our midst the winter of mistrust, fear and hostility. For the followers of Christ, hospitality is not an optional extra. It is at the very heart of the Gospel. And the ultimate motivation is clear: to welcome the stranger is to welcome Christ himself. Hospitality is not so much about open doors as about open hearts. There is a risk in having an open heart. One can get hurt. But to open one’s heart is to begin to live. To close it is to begin to die.

REFLECTION Our size as human beings can be measured by the circles we draw to take other people in. The bigger the circle, the bigger the person. A strong person isn’t afraid of people who are different. A wise person welcomes them. By shutting other people out we deny ourselves, the riches of other people’s experience. In the beginning God gave the earth its shape. He made it round. He included everybody. So should we.

OUR SCHOOLS BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS

MARIST COLLEGE Dear Parents/Guardians, On my way to school - On my way to school this morning I met two of our students as they arrived. Nixon Reed in Year 6 was carrying his end product for VCP1. He has designed and built a nature reserve. Grace Franklin in Foundation was carrying a piece of paper with some numeracy sums she had worked out. Grace proudly read to me that 11 plus 6 equals 17. These are just two stories of learning at Marist. Learning circles - Our Ter m Two Learning circles take place tonight and next Monday. In each learning experience these will have a different focus. At La Valla the focus is on progress in numeracy and literacy. At Montagne the focus is on data and helping parents understand the data we have on each student. At Champagnat the focus will be on the VCE/VCAL processes and help ready our families for the subject selection process next term. Discovery celebrations - On Fr iday afternoon parents of our Foundation class gathered in the Discovery playground and celebrate this wonderful learning space which has been designed and built by our students and families. The evening included a barbecue tea. Enrolments - Over the last few days we have been finalising 2018 enrolments at Foundation. Unfortunately, we received more applications than we could accommodate. This has resulted in us having a waiting list for prospective families. At Year 7 our numbers are also very tight and all indications are that this is going to become very difficult in 2019. Our Year 6 class for 2018 is also very close to capacity but some places remain at Year 5. A time to … - Earlier this week I attended the funeral of an 80 year old priest who I was proud to call a friend. Fr Frank Jones was a priest for 55 years and served in many of the parishes in the eastern side of the diocese. He was faith filled and a deeply pastoral man. Fr Frank was never too busy to spend time with anyone and no-one ever felt unimportant in his presence. As a family we were fortunate to have him baptise two of our children. He loved the sacraments and the God they bring us closer to. The church was overflowing for his funeral and the tributes were joy filled. During the funeral the first reading was the well known passage from Ecclesiastes. As I sat and listened I thought of Fr Frank and realized that he had the grace of knowing the right time for the right gift. Yours sincerely, Darren McGregor - Principal

ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Congratulations to every person who was involved with the Annie Jr Production. The performances along with the finale of Annie Jr last Thursday night were nothing short of brilliant. For so many teams, scenes and technical aspects to come together and run so smoothly, it reflects the attention to detail that Belinda Dart, Vicki Westcott and early in the piece, Alannah Darmody all put into the production. From auditions right through to the final curtain there was a sense of purpose and motivation that the students lapped up and took ownership of. The students need to be commended for the way they played their part. The lead characters had a huge task of memorising their lines, choreographing their parts and then sang like angels. All those in acting roles did a tremendous job and were beautifully supported by the work of the recording team, backstage team, filming crew, promotions team and the amazing voices of the Prep -3 students. Every student had a role and they took it seriously on the night contributing to the success of the production. A massive thank you to our school community for your support. This week we will get things back to ‘normal’ and reset for term 3. We are coming to the conclusion of what has been a very busy term. The children have participated in many extra curricula activities such as cross country, Year 5/6 camp, soccer, Gym and over the next two days girls and boys football. They have been involved in the NAPLAN testing, and a major focus on our production of Annie Jr. This on top of the many learnings in the classroom and the hard work of student and teachers has resulted in a successful term. EXPO - It was fantastic to see so many visitors come along and share in the Year 3-6 Learning Expo yesterday. With the focus on Geography, the children articulated how they had linked their interest to the key learning areas and presented their research around this. Well done to everyone. End of Term - As it is the end of term on Friday 30th June, there will be some changes to the end of the day. Our assembly will be held at 2.00pm and children will be dismissed at 2.30pm. Thank you to everyone for all your work both at home and school to enhance your child’s learning. Have a safe and relaxing break and we’ll see you all next term. Regards Frank Dullard - Principal

ROSTERS

What a Life! A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother, who immediately demanded an inspec-tion of the place. The farmer had genuinely tried to be friendly to his new mother-in-law, hoping that it could be a friendly, non- antagonistic relationship. All to no avail though, as she kept nagging them

at every opportunity, demanding changes, offering unwanted advice, and generally making life unbearable for the farmer and his new bride.

While they were walking through the barn, during the forced inspection, the farmer's mule

suddenly reared up and kicked the mother-in-law in the head, killing her instantly. It was a shock to all no matter their feelings toward her demanding ways...

At the funeral service a few days later, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by. The pastor noticed that whenever a woman would whisper something to the farmer, he

would nod his head yes and say something. Whenever a man walked by and whispered to the farmer, however, he would shake his head no, and mumble a reply.

Very curious as to this bizarre behaviour, the pastor later asked the farmer what that was all

about. The farmer replied, "The women would say, 'What a terrible tragedy and I would nod my head and say 'Yes, it was.' The men would ask, 'Can I borrow that mule?' and I would shake my head and

say, 'Can't, it's all booked up for a year.'"
