ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
From the Pastor’s Laptop
Father Mark Wagner Two years ago at
Christmas we distributed the book “The Jesus S h o c k ” t o a l l parishioners. This book describes well that everyone has a strong reaction to Jesus: either positive or negative. When the name “Jesus” is pronounced in any gathering, some people have warm feelings because they think of Jesus as a merciful savior, or they feel annoyed because they think of Jesus as a judge who wants to take away their pleasures. We have now entered the Year of Mercy. It is a time to remember that Jesus is all about mercy. He came to call sinners and He invites us to imitate Him

by practicing works of mercy. As long as we are sorry for our sins,
we will never be afraid of the coming of Jesus. The only people who should be afraid of Jesus are those who hold on to their selfish sins. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that when He comes at the end of the world, some people will be frightened, but His followers will be basking in His radiant mercy: “People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand” (Luke 21:25-28).

Healthy Tips from our St. Joseph’s Health Ministry
Antibiotics can cure bacterial
infections, but not viral infections. The common cold and flu are viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed causes some
bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics, and are harder to kill.
Talk to your doctor about the need for antibiotics.

Profiles in Stewardship By Tammy Menezes
These Stewardship Profiles are normally dedicated to lay stewards, but sometimes we dedicate them to our clergy, as we did when Fr. Illo left St. Joseph’s. We are all “called” to answer His call and serve as we are able. Fr. Edwin answered the call to help at St. Joseph’s when we were in great need of an additional Associate Pastor. He soon charmed us with his quick wit, good humor and excellent dedication to his priesthood and parish tasks. His smiling countenance was something our parishioners came to look forward to at each Mass he served, and joined parish activities. He became very beloved for the tenderness with which he cared for those who were suffering, especially when serving during a funeral Mass. When Modesto had an unexpected vacancy for the Hospital Chaplain, our Bishop asked Fr. Edwin to fill this role. On October 14, Fr. Edwin began this new assignment, and is in residence at Holy Family Parish in Modesto. True to his servant’s heart, he still helped us with Mass coverage during Fr. Francis’ vacation.
We are thankful for this holy man and for those, like him, answer the call to serve. We will miss you, Fr. Edwin!
