October 6, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this sycamore tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.” We have to have faith that God will set our world straight and that His justice will prevail. It is in this light that we should view the theme for this Sunday: Respect Life. We do everything we can to promote life, but ultimately we have to have faith that God’s way will prevail. We may think that we live in an odd era when things, like respect for life, are not clearly defined. The reality is that values are as fickle as the people who uphold them. Take the ancient world, the Romans created laws for the civil rights of certain people and enforced marital laws to protect the parties. They upheld allegiance to the family, and yet they allowed unwanted children to be abandoned and hung those who broke the law, outside of their city gates.
Over fifty years ago, here in this state, there were separate facilities for black and white and today abortions are allowed while the use of plastic bags will soon be prohibited. Yes, we are fickle. God’s will is the only solid base to formulate our reality and that which we value. God created life, therefore it is sacred. God promoted life, therefore it must be promulgated. God enforced laws that protected life, therefore it cannot be disregarded. We gather this Sunday as Family…brothers and sisters in Christ. We focus and honor the various stages of life from conception to natural death. We salute the family nucleus as well as the various stages of life from student to widow. Above all, we appreciate the gift of human life that each one of us holds. Our creation allows us to enter into the eternal life that God intends for each of us. For the committed Catholic, respecting life is expected. We are like that servant in the Gospel reading. We put on our aprons and serve our master recognizing that we are simply doing that which we are obligated to do. We are obligated to lead others to respect life by respecting their lives.
Today is Respect Life Sunday. October is Respect Life Month.
This year’s Respect Life theme is “Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life.”

From Your Friends at Outreach: One of the blessings of our new location and the partnerships that we have created since we’ve been here is more space to do the things we have been called to do.One of those is our Table of Plenty Lunch, a pilot program that will launch Friday, September 27, 2019. We will be offering a free lunch to the neediest among us right here in our own backyard in Mill Creek. This will take the place of our Emmanuel Dining Room program, which, after a period of discernment this summer, we have decided would be put to better use closer to home. There is great need in our immediate community and we now have an opportunity to address. We still need YOU! The amazing generosity that is the hallmark of the people of St. John the Beloved always comes through and we will need sandwiches, drinks and snacks to make this program work. Donations can be brought directly to our location at 1205 Milltown Rd. anytime we are open. Beginning Friday, October 11 and continuing every other week ongoing, sandwich donations can be dropped off there on Fridays from 9-11 a.m. We will be scheduling groups for sandwich preparation shortly. Thanks and God Bless You All!
The SJB HOLIDAY CRAFT SHOW will be held on Saturday, November 9 from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. This year's show will be a 1-day event. We are accepting both crafters and vendors this year. Help us make our show a great event as you have in past years. The proceeds go entirely to meals we prepare for 2 Emmanuel Dining Room locations. Thank you, Pat Kelly

Daniel 4: 10-12
The tree that you saw, which became large and grew strong, whose height reached to the sky and was visible to all
the earth.
2nd grade and Kindergarten did a fabulous job helping our tree grow this Fall. In both classes we talked about oil pastel and how they differ from crayons. Students used the pastels and thin paper to allow for texture to show through. Kindergarten was led through a step by step drawing of an
acorn. They added the golden brown color with paint. The acorns are paired up with some brightly colored leaves. Though they may not be our typical fall foliage colors, they are still bold and beautiful. 2nd grade got to use our new neon tempera paint cakes. They are used like watercolors, but have the thickness of Tempera paint. Our tree is large and full of life this Fall. Well done students!

The Mysteries of the Rosary Have you ever wanted to explore the life of Jesus and Mary in a deeper way? Each decade highlights a sacred episode:Joyful Mysteries: Through the Annunciation (1) and Visitation (2), we get a glimpse at Mary’s joyful yes to God. She gives birth to Jesus in the Nativity (3). Mary and Joseph present their son at the temple (4) and bring him there again when he is a teenager (5).Luminous Mysteries: Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River (1) before Mary gives him a nudge to his first miracle at Cana (2). Jesus proclaims the Gospel (3), is transfigured on Mount Tabor (4), and institutes the Eucharist (5). The light is shining!Sorrowful Mysteries: Jesus prays in agony in Gethsemane (1), knowing his hour of suffering has come. After his betrayal and arrest, Jesus is scourged (2) and crowned with thorns (3). He carries his cross (4), and Mary stands at the foot of the cross as he is crucified (5).Glorious Mysteries: Christ is risen in glory (1)! After appearing to those he loves, he ascends into heaven (2). Jesus’ followers receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (3). Mary, unaffected by original sin, is assumed body and soul into heaven (4), where she is crowned queen, humble mother of Christ the King (5). ©LPi

CYCLE C
Mission for the WeekIf you know of people in your church who arevery old or sick, talk to your family about waysto help them. You could rake leaves for them, help them clean their house, or bring themgroceries. Help with a smile.
Sharing the Gospel: God wants you to have faith and trust him completely. Jesus said, “If your faith is as small as a mustard seed, you can tell a tree to grow in the ocean, and it will.” A mustard seed is smaller than a freckle. You trust your school bus will go to your school. You have faith that clowns will make you laugh. You just need a little bit of faith and God will be there for you.
“When you have done all you have been commanded, say ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” The metaphor in the story could seem harsh to us today. A servant has worked hard all day, and rather than receiving a much-needed respite, the master commands an additional task. Jesus, however, is appearing to their sensibilities. This was a hierarchical society in which everyone had a place. His listeners would know this. No servant would presume a reward for good deeds. It’s important to remember that we do have a place at God’s table. But we don’t “earn” it. Dining with the Lord at the heavenly wedding feast requires surrender. It requires deep faith in God and His promises. It also requires commitment. The kingdom takes work! There are fields to plow and initiatives to prepare. There are sheep to tend to and family to care for. There are people waiting for our yes to generous service. When we serve dinner at a homeless shelter, we are waiting on the table of Christ. When we visit an ill relative, we’re imitating the Good Samaritan. We’re visiting Jesus! We’re growing his kingdom of life and love. The Gospel today reminds us to check our motives. Are we serving because we’re seeking a reward? Or because we have faith that this is who we’re meant to serve? That is, is this where we’re meant to be? The Gospel reminds us that this faith can do powerful things! “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” But, ultimately, we’re not the ones doing the deeds. We’re not the ones “earning” the grace. Faith, and the good we do for others, is a gift. ©LPi

Saint John the Beloved Council of the Knights of Columbus invites all men age 18 and older to join us in our ongoing support of our Church, Diocese & Community. Each year our Council of nearly 200 parish men, donates over 10,000 hours of our time and $14,000 in direct financial assistance through our various programs. Join us so that we can continue our good works. We need you and we welcome you. Pope Francis’ message to the Knights of Columbus is our mission statement: “The Church is called to be a community of brothers and sisters who accept and care for one another and serve
as a leaven of reconciliation and unity for the whole human family. This vocation found particular expression in the principles of faith, fraternity and service, which guided the establishment of the Knights of Columbus. The fidelity of the Knights to these high ideals has not only ensured the continued vitality of the Order, but has also contributed, and continues to contribute, to the mission of the Church at every level.” For more information please visit our council website at https://sjbkofcde.org.
