Parish Mission Statement We, the parish family of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church welcome all, young and old, active or inactive, committed
or alienated, to enrich their lives by joining and participating in our faith community. We seek to reflect the light of Jesus
Christ by reaching out to serve all, and by sharing our joy and hope, as we continue our faith journey. May our lives,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, and nourished by the Eucharist, bear witness to our love for neighbors near and far.
ST. ANTHONY PARISH COHASSET, MA
Dear Parishioners,
While we are entering the Second Week in Ordinary time. The
days we celebrate this week are certainly far from being ordinary
days. On Monday the nation pauses to celebrate the ninetieth
birthday (January 21) of Martin Luther King. Boston holds a
special place in the life of Doctor King who was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in combating racial inequality
through non-violent resistance. Doctor King was awarded a Ph.D.
in Systematic Theology from Boston University on June 5, 1995
and served as Assistant Minister at Boston’s historic Twelfth
Baptist Church in Roxbury during his years of study at BU. On
the same day, Monday, the Church celebrates the feast day of St
Agnes, patroness of Christian virtue. Although little is known of
St Agnes, she has been worshipped as a popular Roman saint
who was martyred at the age of twelve during the reign of
Diocletian according to reports by both St Augustine and St
Ambrose. She is represented by a martyr’s palm and a lamb ( the
Latin word for “lamb is agnus).
Tuesday is the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court
decision of Roe v Wade and all of the dioceses in the United
States will observe a day of prayer for the legal Protection of
Unborn Children. The memorial Mass for St. Vincent, a fourth
century deacon and martyr is moved to the following day,
January 23. Finally, on Friday we celebrate the Conversion of
Saint Paul the Apostle. A popular hymn sung on this day tells the
story of Paul’s conversion of the way to Damascus: “The Church
celebrates today, the great Saint Paul who was her foe. Becoming
an apostle true when once his Lord he came to know. The fir and
heat with which he fought...the name of Christ when he was
young….were turned to everlasting love for him who on the cross
had hung.”
Sincerely,
Fr John R. Mulvehill

Our first year in Honduras proved to be 8
days of incredible challenges. Cultural and
language barriers were the hardest at
first. We do not spend any time worrying about such things in our
mission. Most of the time we realize we are all the same. Our
struggles may have a different appearance at first glance, but then
we realize what we have in common. The struggle. What we learn
is the common solution to over coming what ever the struggle is.
Our power within to fight the good fight. We realize there is a lot
of good in this world and it is worth fighting for. We understand
God is not mythical. We embrace our free will and we understand
the plan God has for us is simply do good in the face of evil. To
recognize our struggle within so we can recognize the struggles of
humanity. We go to God for strength, never to blame. We do not
waste our time with pity or shame. We simply decide to embrace
humanity for the good of humanity. This is the key. We develop
each other so we can find the common thread of God's love.
Loving one another as we are loved. We are not saviors. We are
simply mission workers, not just In Honduras or Kentucky. We
are mission workers each moment of the day for the good of
humanity. Each simple smile. Each act of kindness. Each time we
understand one another. We are all part of the same mission. You
and me. Thank God for that
JANUARY 20, 2019
Prayer for Our Troops Almighty God and Father, hold our servicemen and
women in your loving hands. Protect them as they
protect us. Bless them and their families for the
selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior
Amen
