Awesome Day!
We will be holding an ‘Awesome Day’ on Thursday, 28th November. This day will be held to celebrate the life of
our much loved teacher and colleague, Mr Mark ‘Stevo’ Stevens. It will also celebrate our new motto ‘Be
Awesome’ that was inspired by Mr Stevens. Our SRC have been discussing how we can best capture the fun and
spirit of Mr Stevens on this day, through the activities that are provided. For those who knew Mr Stevens well, you
won’t be surprised by some of the suggestions received for this day. These suggestions include the use of whoopee
cushions, reading disgusting stories and playing dodgeball (headshots allowed!).
We will finalise all activities shortly and present them in the newsletter next week. Our SCR have asked that
everyone wear bright clothing on the day and that they provide a gold coin donation. They would like to donate this
money to Kidney Health Australia. What an awesome idea from our awesome kids!
Parent Helpers/Volunteers Morning Tea
Spring Gully Primary School values the contribution of parents/volunteers and would like to recognise these
important contributions with a “Parent Helpers/Volunteers Morning Tea” on Monday, 16th of December from
11am. The staff would like to see our new staffroom overflowing. There is no need to bring anything other than
yourself.

From the Assistant Principal
This week’s e-safe topic: Unwanted Contact and Grooming Socialising online can be a great way for children to build friendships, but it can also put them at
risk. Unwanted contact is any type of online communication that your child finds unpleasant or confronting, or that leads
them into a situation where they might do something they regret. This can happen even if they initially welcomed
the contact. It can come from strangers, online ‘friends’ your child has not met face-to-face, or from someone they
actually know.
At worst, it can involve ‘grooming’ a child — building a relationship with a child in order to sexually abuse them.
This abuse can happen in a physical meeting, but it increasingly occurs online when young people are tricked or
persuaded into sexual activity on webcams or into sending sexual images.

When providing permission for Events, such as the upcoming swimming program, please leave the medical and
contact cells in the Event permission window blank unless you are providing details that are different to what
we have on our records.
Each time something is entered into these cells for an Event we get an automated email flagging this information.
So for example, if someone types ‘N/A’ into the ‘Medication’ cell, we get an email alerting us to this. This is the
same if something is entered into the 'Contact' cell. Please only put a contact number into this cell if the number is
different to the one currently in your child's Compass profile.
You can update your Compass profile at any time if you ever need to change the contact number or email.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS
This term, the grade 5s and 6s have been exploring chapter 8 of the RRRR curriculum. The activities within the topic of “Positive Gender Relations” have, so far, focused on:
- Identifying and describing types of violence, then learning how violence can be categorised under the law
- Engaging with data showing the gendered pattern of violence in the adult community
- Exploring the relationship between negative gender norms and the acceptance of gender-based violence
We have had some really open and thoughtful conversations within 5/6 Daenke, using national statistics around violence to provoke genuine discussion and strategizing about our roles in society, in our families and at school, in relation to disrupting the cycle of violence. This week we played two games – Robot & Controller, and the Mirror Game – as a metaphor for power imbalances in relationships, and discussed how setting boundaries and trust were at the core of positive relationships.

Regional Final in Rochester on Wednesday.
Junior School Athletics
The Junior Athletic Sports will be held on Friday the 29th of November, 9am at the Spring Gully Cricket Oval.
This will provide each student within grades Prep, One and Two with an opportunity to participate in a range of
athletic events. Students will be split into six groups and will compete in their grade level for the duration of the
day. Fun and participation are the themes of the day. Children will need to wear house colours, broad-brim hat, sun
protection and suitable footwear for running. Children are asked to bring a water bottle, which can be refilled on the
day.
Further information, including consent to participate will be placed on Compass shortly.
Swimming Program This year our Swimming Program will be held during this term at the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre, Eaglehawk on
the following dates:
GROUP 1
Grades (TBA)
Mon 2nd Dec
Tues 3rd Dec
Wed 4th Dec
Thurs 5th Dec
Fri 6th Dec
GROUP 2
Grades (TBA)
Mon 9th Dec
Wed 11th Dec
Thurs 12th Dec
Fri 13th Dec
Tues 17th Dec
The students will complete five sessions with a fully qualified Austswim teacher from the Leisure Centre. Each
session will be of 40 minutes duration. As this program forms part of the Health and Physical Education
curriculum, it is important for all students to attend and take part in the lessons.
In order to place students in swimming groups appropriate to their level, all new students to Spring Gully PS in
2019 (including all Prep students) will receive a skill competence assessment checklist. We ask parents/carers to
complete, as accurately as they can, this form and return it to school as soon as possible so that we can start to
organise the groups. Students who completed the swimming program in 2018 do not need to complete this
form as they have already been placed in a group based on last year’s results.
Further information, including confirmation of the cost and exact times, will be sent home in the coming weeks.
Grade 6 Interschool Sport
Throughout Term 4 our Grade 6 students will be playing sports (Cricket and Handball) against other schools in our
district. As with the Term 2 sports, the main purpose of this competition is to allow our students to mix with others
from Bendigo South East feeder schools, whilst enjoying the benefits of playing team sports. The sports will
culminate in a transition day at BSE at the end of the term.
A bus has been organised for our ‘Away’ games and parents are more than welcome to attend. Below is a schedule
of events with all games going from approx. 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

Grade 5 Melbourne Museum Excursion
Last Friday the Grade 5 students went to the Melbourne Museum for an excursion, we caught the
train and the tram. At the museum there was a 3D movie to watch about Earth’s volcanoes. I really
enjoyed looking at the skeletons in the marine display. The magnifying goggles were cool to look
through. I also really liked checking out the dinosaurs. At the end of the day we played on the
playground before taking a very crowded tram back to the station.

Active Travel News Quite a few of our junior students participated enthusiastically in Walk to School month and it’s great to see a lot of
them still walking and riding to school now that the month is officially over. The idea of Walk to School month is
to help develop a habit, after all.
In fact, more than half of the Prep Haxby students have walked, scooted and ridden to school every week this term,
which is a big increase on last term! Well done Prep Haxby! Younger students often have more stamina by fourth
term, so it can be a good time to introduce walking or riding to school – even just once a week.
If you started walking or riding part way during Walk to School month, you might even consider starting a little bit
further away to enjoy a bit more time walking and chatting together now that it’s part of your routine.
