The New Year Won’t Change WhatCounts But Christ Can!
The New Year is upon us. Traditionally,it is a time to think optimistically aboutwhat it brings. There’s a tendency tothink that it will usher in somethingbetter than what is past. New Year res-olutions are made. People use themoment to pledge themselves to somepersonal change - to stop some habit orpractice regarded as negative andunhelpful. The general idea of positivechange lies behind all the parties andcelebrations that take place at heturning of the hour. The old year isreviewed and then focus turns to thenew in the hope that it will provide afresh start in some way. So here wehave it, a common hope that, with thisparticular annual movement of thecalendar, a positive change has arrived.
However, in reality has anything reallychanged? After all, it is only an artificialman-made measurement of thepassage of time. Is the 31st Decemberso significantly different from the 1st ofJanuary? The truth is that the New Yearbrings with it all the same challenges ofthe old year. History confirms this factevery year; that the passage of timereally hasn’t changed things. Regard-less of how advanced and developed
we consider ourselves the human raceremains fundamentally unchanged innature. Yes, we can rejoice in thebenefits of advances in science & tech-nology. But, tragically, humanity is per-petually plagued by war, genocide, starvation, disease, corruption, embez-zlement, greed, pride, murder, lying, op-pression, injustice…etc and 2012doesn’t promise to eradicate these. It isnaive to think that at a personal, nationalor international level a New Year will ir-reversibly change things for the better.Indeed, the Bible states; ‘What hasbeen will be again, what has been donewill be done again; there is nothing newunder the sun.’ (Ecclesiastes 1:9, NIV).The truth is that all our attempts athuman reform can never address hu-manities greatest need - the fallenspiritual condition of the human heart‘…without hope and without God in theworld.’ (Ephesians 2:12, NIV) Humanitysimply is spiritually dead in sin. Forsince in the wisdom of God the worldthrough its wisdom did not know him,…(1Corinthians 1:21, NIV). This is theresult of humanity denying God andrunning its own affairs, worshippingwhat it sees fit to worship rather than theliving God. This is sin and the wages ofsin is death – eternal separation fromGod and all that is good in hell.
However, the Christian gospel isn’t badnews but rather very good news indeed.God in Christ has come to humanity’said. ‘God was pleased through the fool-ishness of what was preached to savethose who believe.’ (1Corinthians 1:21,NIV). Jesus Christ obediently andwillingly paid the price for sin throughhis own death on the cross. For thosewho repent of their sin and seek for-giveness through Christ comes achange in their fundamental condition:‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, thenew creation has come: The old hasgone, the new is here!’ (2Corinthians5:17, NIV). This is the resurrection lifeof the new humanity in Jesus destinedfor the new creation of the future.
So what are your hopes for the NewYear? How deep and profound arethey? Are they secure and certain? Willthey address your first and greatestneed to be reconciled to your creator?Cast aside the superficiality of thisseason and turn to Christ ‘For he says,“In the time of my favour I heard you,and in the day of salvation I helpedyou.” I tell you, now is the time of God’sfavour, now is the day of salvation.’(2Corinthians 6:2, NIV)

A Happy New Year to one and all! Certainly,
from my own perspective, 2012 looks to be
an exciting year, not least because of a
house move (albeit only a couple of miles
away) in a matter of weeks!
2012 is also set to be an exciting year in
terms of the constitutional debate that is happening in
Scotland. It is an exciting time to be in politics with the mix of
day-to-day issues combined with the very long-term and
strategic decision that will face the people of Scotland in the
referendum.
All in all 2012 will be a busy and challenging time for most folk
and wish everyone power to their elbow in their own chal-
lenges.
Here’s tae a guid 2012 for a’body!
I can’t really claim to be fluent in Doric or,
indeed, any dialect of Scots but like most
folk around the country I use phrases and
words that have seeped into the brain over
the years, perhaps from reading the
obligatory Broons and Oor Wullie annuals around Christmas
and New Year and, more recently, the Chewin’ the Fat and
Still Game Christmas specials!
It has struck me over the festive period the importance that
humour plays in helping to maintain our traditional language
and culture. It’s particularly important in financially tough times
that can be very stressful for families and individuals that we
have that humour which gives us a bit of valve to release the
pressures that build up each day.
In that vein I wish everyone a bit of humour through 2012.

Carer Support Service (Moray)
Do you have a friend who lives with someone who has a
drink or drug problem ?
Are you worried about how they are coping and don't
know what to say to them ?
Want to help them but have been putting off, as you don't
know how to help ?
Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) provides
confidential help and advice to unpaid Carers throughout
Moray. We know from experience that those who care for
family members who misuse substances, particularly
alcohol, are worried about the implications of discussing
their concerns outwith their own family and close friends.
Many don't consider themselves to be Carers and,
therefore, don't realise that Quarriers Carer Support
Service (Moray) is here to help. We have staff who will
listen and understand.
We also know the very important role friends play. Most
family members who come to us for help, do so in the first
instance with the support of a close friend. So help your
friend take that all important first step by calling Quarriers
on 01343-556031 or if you wish to remain anonymous call
our confidential helpline on 01343-555031.
"I didn't used to speak about it. You tend to hide it,
but everyone knows anyway. You are in denial. You
keep thinking 'It's not that bad' and then you hit
rock bottom. You need help before you go to
pieces. Support from Quarriers has made me feel
more empowered and informed and more able to
continue caring" - wife of husband who drinks too
much.
"Help can take various forms. Usually people initially
want to offload to someone who understands but
isn't a family member. We have a team of discreet
and professional staff who will listen. We also
provide opportunities for you to meet others living
in similar situations, training to help cope e.g.
managing difficult behaviour or setting boundaries,
as well as advice and information on a wide range
of subjects e.g. debt" - Susan Leonard, Project
Manager.
It's 2012 . Don't put off any longer. Make a change by calling Quarriers.

Chocolate and Berry Roulade
Ingredients
150g Caster Sugar6 large eggs50g Cocoa Powder500g mixed frozen fruit (thawed)50ml Sloe Gin250ml Double Cream1 tablespoon Caster Sugar1 heaped teaspoon of Ground ArrowrootIcing sugar for dusting1 x 27cm x 22cm baking tin / swiss roll tin 2cm deepbaking parchment
1.Lightly grease the baking tin and line with the baking parchment2.Using two bowls separate the eggs with the whites in one bowl and the yolks in another. Whisk the egg yolks with an electric whisk until they start to thicken. Add the caster sugar and beat until fully mixed. Stir in the cocoa powder. Wash and dry thoroughly the electric beaters.3.In the separate bowl beat the egg whites until they stand in soft peaks. Fold gently in to the chocolate mixture.4.Pour in to the lined baking tin and bake in the centre of a preheated oven at 180°C for 20 minutes until it has risen and springy to touch. Remove from the oven and leave in the tin until completely cooled.5.Place the thawed frozen fruit into a sieve and strain the juice in to a bowl. Place the fruit and one tablespoon of the juices in to a pan with the Sloe Gin and one tablespoon of caster sugar, and heat to simmering point. Mix the Ground Arrowroot with a little of the reserved fruit juice to a paste before stirring in to the fruit mixture to thicken. Allow to cool completely.6.Place a sheet of greaseproof or baking parchment on to a clean dry service and dust with icing sugar. Turn out the chocolate roulade on to this, and carefully peel off the baking parchment.7.Spoon the fruit mixture on to the chocolate roulade in a thin layer. Whip the cream to form soft peaks and spoon over the fruit mixture.8.Roll up the roulade as tightly as you can and place on a serving dish. Chill until you are ready to serve. Don't worry if it cracks as this adds to character of the dish. For a really decadent finish, drizzle melted chocolate over the roulade!

leisurePhysical activity, health and well-being
It is well accepted by both health professionals and
the fitness industry that regular exercise of moderate
to vigorous intensity, carried out at least three to five
times per week is good for us and that this exercise
should be for about 30 - 60 minutes per session.
Exercise increases strength, improves the heart and
lungs, maintains flexibility and generally leads to a
feeling of well-being. As well as this it can be fun,
rewarding and intensely addictive once a routine is
established and the benefits are starting to be felt
which may be weight loss, muscle tone, flexibility and
many more on top of these.
Across Moray there are a number of Fitness-room
facilities operated by the Moray Council Sports &
Leisure Services section, all of which are open to the
public, have no joining fee, are fully equipped with
up to date equipment and have qualified staff on
hand to lend support and advice if required.
The Fitness-rooms have a selection of equipment
such as treadmills, rowing machines, cross-trainers,
cycles as well as resistance (weights) for
increasing muscle strength and tone.
Why not make it your long term New Year resolution and take up the offer of our 2 for 1 induction offer during January and February at
only £15.00 for two.

Dreamingof...
In these days where people are looking for more exotic destinations, Vietnam and Cambodia are among the next popular countries to travel to. Vietnam offers a fantastic range of places to see and visit, whether you are looking for sightseeing, beaches or a touring holiday. In the city locations an organised tour is a good way to help you become orientated. If you want to explore independently there are a whole array of taxis and 'cyclos' which like a modern day rickshaw offer a novel and fun way to get around. World events have inevitably cast their shadow across this country, which was for so many years the subject of news bulletins rather than travel brochures. In the last 20 years this charming nation of people has opened its doors to visitors. Not only does Vietnam have a variety of places to see, but it also enjoys a vast and beautiful coastline, mist shrouded mountains, mighty rivers and cascading waterfalls. Whether your passion is for history, scenery, food or culture the delicate tapestry of this nation will offer you all of this and much more besides. Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, and one of the hidden gems of South East Asia. It retains an elegance and charm not often found in this part of the world. Enjoy in particular the city's French influence, seen in fine old colonial buildings and tree lined boulevards. The vibrant and dynamic Ho Chi Minh city, formerly Saigon, is the largest and most energetic city in Vietnam, and the cultural heart of the nation.Hoi An is a well preserved trading port dating back to the 15th century, and the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels (once home to 10,000 people) are well worth visiting.
Cambodia was for many years off limits for travellers but now welcomes them with open arms. This magical land boasts ancient temples, dense forests, glorious beaches and a captivating culture and history. The most famous of the country's ancient sites is Angkor. This awe inspiring construction is quite rightly named as one of the 'Seven wonders of the world'. By travelling further afield you can enjoy lazy sun kissed beaches in Sihanoukville, sleepy towns and spectacular national parks. The evocatively named Phnom Penh is a beautiful city full to the brim with charmingly dilapidated colonial heritage. There is also a vibrant riverside promenade and a whole selection of cafes and restaurants. It is important to remember that with developing countries the tourism infrastructure is not as refined as in other places in the region. Hotel standards vary enormously and can be subject to delays and changes.
Vietnam and Cambodia are two fantastic countries waiting to be discovered –we should all go before they become tourist traps and become spoilt.

“ ”For there is one God, and one mediator
between God and men, the man Christ Jesus1 Timothy 2:4-6
Have you made up your own "God"?
Published by www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish Charity SCO41290
"You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay." Isaiah 29:16
Some have turned God into a loving Santa Claus who showers us with good things when we are nice. When we are naughty, however, He isn’t quite as generous. Perish the thought that He would ever punish us! He is a loving God. They think that in the end He will forgive everyone…except the Hitlers and the Stalins.
Others have made God into a family doctor. He is there when we need Him. Most of the time we can get on quite well without Him. In fact, we rarely even think about Him unless we have a problem. But when misfortune strikes, they want God to hear their call for help and come to their rescue.
Still others have formed God into a watchmaker. He created the universe, set it in motion and then they think He sat back to watch it tick away on its own. He is far removed and doesn’t get involved in our aairs. So they believe they are free to form their own laws, their own standards of right and wrong, even their own religion.
If we really want to know what God is like and what He thinks and expects of us, we must be willing to set aside our opinions and listen to what He has to say about Himself. We must turn to God’s Word, the Bible. What does the Bible say about God – the God with whom we have to do?
Have we formed our own opinions about who God is; what He is like, what type of lifestyles He approves of and whom He will forgive? Are we making up our own “God”? Have we turned things upside down ?
God is Holy and He demands something from us. He wants us to put our faith in His Son for salvation. Many people today think that they will be in Heaven as long as they don’t commit any heinous crimes. But the Bible teaches that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). We have all – you & me, everyone - fallen short of God’s moral standards. We have all broken His laws, and our sin makes us unt for heaven.Only by personally accepting Christ as our own Lord and Saviour – believing that he died for OUR sins and was raised for OUR justication, and forsaking our sins to live in subjection to Him – can we approach this Holy God. The Bible says "He that believeth on the Son (Jesus Christ) hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”(John 3:35-36) What have you done then with Jesus which is called Christ?
God is Just and will by no means pass by sin.You may not like thinking about this, but the Bible states that God has appointed a day in which He will judge you by that man (Jesus Christ) whom He has appointed. Each of us will personally meet with God one day. We will either meet Him in our sins and be judged by Him, and be cast into the lake of re, or if we are saved, we will meet Him clothed in the righteousness of His Dear Son, so that when God looks at us He no longer sees our sin, but instead sees us clothed in the righteousness of Christ . "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, (John 3:18).
God is Gracious and Merciful and has given us ample time and opportunity to accept His one way of salvation. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Acts 16:31
Have you made a "God" of your own liking, a "God" who resembles a Santa Claus, a watchmaker, a doctor or something else? If so, then you have turned things upside down. Your "God" exists only in your imagination. He is not the God of the Bible, or the God you will meet in eternity. To be ready to meet the true God you must prepare on His terms – your own imagination will only take you to Hell.
