Introduction

Creating and maintaining categories requires the following:
•Use Categories Master to create a master list of categories and subcategories•Use Assigning Databases to assign resources to subcategories•Use Category Display to determine how categories and subcategories will display to users•Use ALL Subcategories to update the new settings

Categories Master - Category

The first component of the Categories Master page is the Category pane, which appears on the left side of the page. From this component, you can create, rename, set order, and delete categories. A series of icons at the top of the Category pane represent the following actions:
Create a new category Rename a category Set order of categories Delete a category
Note: MetaLib creates the General subcategory automatically for each category to allow you to assign resources directly to a category via the General subcategory.

The second component of the Categories Master page is the Subcategory pane, which appears on the right side of the page. From this pane you can create, rename, set order, and delete subcategories. A series of icons at the top of the Subcategory pane represent the following actions
Create new subcategory under a selected category Rename a selected subcategory Order the subcategories for a selected category Delete an existing subcategory from a selected category

After the category and subcategory lists have been created, you can assign resources (databases) to various subcategories. The Assigning Databases page contains the following components:
•The Select Category drop‐down list (left pane) contains a list of categories.•The Select Subcategory pane (left pane) contains a list of subcategories per category. By default, the first subcategory of the first category displays.•The Database pane (center pane) contains a list of resources with action buttons.•The Locate Resource pane (right pane) allows you to search for resources and display the results in a separate tab.

To assign resources to a category: •Select a category •Select a subcategory •Locate resources •Add resources

The Select Category drop‐down list allows you to select a category to which you want to assign a resource.

The Select Subcategory drop‐down list contains a list of subcategories for the category selected in the Select Category drop‐down list. If any resources are assigned to this subcategory, they display in the Databases pane.

The Locate Resources pane, which appears on the right side of the page, contains the following tabs:
•The Search tab - allows you to specify search criteria to locate resources. To execute a search, enter your search criteria and then click Go to perform the search
•The Results tab displays the results from the search
Note that MetaLib retains the results from your previous search until you execute another search or terminate your session.

In the Results tab click the check boxes next to the resources that you want to add to your category/subcategory and then click the arrow button between the Databases pane and the Locate Resource pane to move the resources to the Databases pane.

NOTES: After you add resources to a subcategory, you must perform the ALL subcategory procedure to display the changes in the user interface.
See ALL Subcategories on slide 18 for details.
In the Databases pane and the Locate Resources pane, you can display information for a resource by clicking the Info icon next to the resource.

If you want to remove a resource from a subcategory, click the Delete icon next to the resource in the Databases pane.
NOTE: After you remove resources from a subcategory, you must perform the ALL subcategory procedure to display the changes in the user interface. See ALL Subcategories on slide 18 for details.
The resources listed in the Databases pane appear in the order in which you copy them to the Databases pane. You can change this order by using the following action icons:
Click the Sort icon to alphabetize the resources in the Databases pane Click the Set Order icon to display the Order Databases dialog box

The ALL subcategory is a generated subcategory that contains all of the resources (no duplicates) from all of the individual subcategories in the category. It enables users to search all subcategories simultaneously. You should apply the All Subcategories function when an administrative session includes the following activities:
•Adding and/or removing resources•Adding and/or removing categories and subcategories
To update the ALL subcategory to include changes to categories, subcategories, and resources, click the ALL Subcategories link in the navigation bar. This function automatically creates a new index for all subcategories under each category. The Create All Subcategories page displays the progress of the update. The system refreshes the page several times with a Please wait … message until the function completes.

The Category Display page allows you to modify how categories and subcategories appear to the end user in the user interface.
You can customize the category display at the following levels:•portal level•language level per portal

The Category Display page contains the following panes:
•The left pane displays the master categories and their associated display names. Clicking one of the categories in the left pane displays the category and its subcategories in the right pane.
•The right pane contains the selected category (by default, the first category in the master category list) and its associated subcategories in the left column, and their associated display names in the right column.

Change Portal Parameters The Portal Parameters dialog box allows you to select which customer portal to modify. This dialog box contains the following drop‐down list:•Institution•Portal•Language
Single institution administrators can move between the portals and languages for their institution if multi‐portals and multi‐languages exist for the institution. Group administrators can move between the portals and languages for any of the institutions belonging to the group.

The left pane of the Category Display page consists of two columns:Category and Display NameThe check box next to each category indicates whether the category displays in the user interface. From this pane, you can perform the following actions:
•The category order can be modified by clicking the Set Order icon, which displays the Order Categories dialog box.•To modify the display for the subcategories, click the categoryʹs name. This displays its related subcategories in the right pane.

The right pane of the Category Display page consists of two columns:Category and Display Name. The check box next to each category/ subcategory indicates whether the category/subcategory displays in the user interface. From this pane, you can perform the following actions:
•Modify the category display name – change name, click submit•Modify the subcategory display names – change name, click submit•Enable/disable the display of subcategories – check/uncheck box•Change the order of the subcategories for user interface display using the icon

NOTES: If at least one subcategory is disabled, the check box in the subcategory heading is cleared. You can use this check box to enable/ disable all the subcategories for the selected categorysimultaneously. If all the subcategories are disabled (cleared), the whole category will automatically be disabled.
Changing category/subcategory display names requires re‐running the ALL subcategories procedure to apply changes to the user interface display.
