Smith elected asASA Chairman
Tim Smith
Tim Smith of Giddings,Texas, has been elected bythe American SimmentalAssociation (ASA) Boardof Trustees to serve aschairman of the associationfor 2018. He was formallyseated during ASA’s 50thAnnual Meeting Jan. 13thin Denver.
As owner/operator ofSmith Genetics, Smith hasbeen affiliated with Sim-mental and Simbrah cattlefor more than 35 years. Hisoperation includes 300Simmental, Simbrah andSimAngus females. Inaddition, Smith operates acustom artificial insemina-tion and embryo transfercenter. Smith has built hisprogram on strong cowfamilies lines and utilizesperformance testing in hisherd. The cattle operationparticipates in the ASA’sTotal Herd Enrollment(THE) program, as well asutilizing EPD data as partof their management plan.Smith Genetics shows cat-tle on a state and nationallevel and he is an advocateof the show ring and juniorprograms.
His involvement withSimGenetics started in1980 after completing aMaster of Science in Ru-minant Nutrition from theUniversity of Kentucky
and he has spent his life-time building his programand promoting SimGene-tics.
Smith co-founded theS i m m e n t a l - S i m b r a hSuperbowl, an event thathas awarded more than$750,00 in prizes, moniesand scholarships to juniorSimGenetic exhibitorsover the past 25 years. Healso hosts and coordinatesthe Simbrah Synergy,which features a sale withgenetics from some of themost progressive Simbrahbreeders, as well as a juniorshow that awards $15,000in prizes and monies, plusthe event includes leader-ship contests for juniors. InMay, Smith Genetics hostsa weekend junior leader-ship and cattle exhibitingcamp to assist juniors inshowing and building theirbreeding programs.
Smith has served on theASA Board of Trusteessince 2012 and has servedas treasurer on the ASAExecutive Board. He is aformer chairman of theASA Simbrah AdvisoryCommittee and has spear-headed several promotion-al events, fund raisingefforts and promotionalcampaigns for the Simbrahbreed. He is involved inmany facets of the beefindustry including an activemember of the Texas Sim-mental/Simbrah Associa-tion, the Texas Southwest-ern Cattle Raisers Asso-ciation, Independent Cat-tlemen’s Association, andTexas Farm Bureau.

The balance sheet is adocument that lists thevalue of all assets owned
and all liabilities owed byan entity at a particularpoint in time. It is alsoreferred to as a financialstatement, a statement ofequity and a net worthstatement. Preparing a bal-ance sheet is a standardoperating procedure formany businesses, includingfarms and ranches. It canalso be useful for an indi-vidual or family who gets inthe habit of preparing it on

a regular basis. It is the best way to
determine if an entity isfinancially progressingover time. Other financialdocuments can reveal howmuch revenue was receivedand how much was paid outfor expenses, which is rele-vant and beneficial toknow, but those documentswill not reveal how much ofany excess revenue wasretained and added to anasset whether it be a bankaccount or physical asset.
When to prepare
The interval an entitychooses to prepare a cur-rent balance sheet willdepend on amount of vari-ation in revenue andexpense flow, the volatilityof asset values, and the sizeof the entity. Intervals canbe as short as one monthand as long as one year orquarterly or semi-annually.Many farmers and rancherschoose to complete a bal-ance sheet annually. Thereis no right or wrong time ofthe year to prepare one.
Often, the balance sheetis prepared after farm pro-duction has been sold orwhen the inventory is the
lowest, allowing for lessuncertainty regarding thevalue of calves, grain orhay. However, it is impor-tant that the financial state-ment be prepared close tothe same date each year.This provides for the bestopportunity to comparechange over time, which isone of the greatest valuesthe document can provide.Just as a series of schoolphotographs of a childstarting in kindergartenand progressing through12th grade can reveal thechild's physical changeover that time, so can theseries of balance sheets
prepared near the sametime each year reveal thefarm or ranch business'sfinancial change over time.
If a farmer or rancherdepends on their tax returnrather than a balance sheetto inform them of how thebusiness progressed finan-cially during the reportingperiod, it is very likely thatduring certain difficultyears the true facts may bedelayed too long for theowner to make prudentmanagement decisions tosurvive the difficult times.
How to prepareThere are two ways to
prepare a balance sheet: a
market basis approach anda cost basis. There are prosand cons to each approach.If a farming businessemploys the services of acertified public accountant(CPA), they will often usethe cost basis, whichincludes all assets beingvalued at their cost with adeduction for accumulateddepreciation. An accruedtax obligation is also usual-ly included in the liabilitiessection before calculatingequity or net worth. Networth is calculated as thedifference between totalassets and total liabilities.
Many sole proprietor
operations prepare balancesheets based on market val-ues. Asset values are listedbased on an estimate oftheir market value. This isgenerally not a problem forfinancial assets such aschecking, savings or invest-ment accounts. However, itcan create a challenge forassets where market valuesare difficult to assess.Oftentimes, an estimate ofincome tax owed is omit-ted, which would be a lia-bility since tax basis inmany assets is less thantheir market value.
Net worthAt the completion of a
balance sheet, what manyare interested in is the networth. How has it changedsince the last prepared bal-ance sheet? There are twoprimary ways that networth can change. One isthrough retained earningsor profit that stays in thebusiness. The other is bychanging the value of theassets, commonly referredto as valuation equity.Many times there is justifi-cation for changing an assetvalue. The pitfall to becareful of is when net worthincreases less than the assetrevaluation.
In conclusion, addition-al information can beobtained from a balancesheet through the calcula-tion of various financialratios. Just as a medicaldoctor focuses on certainmetrics revealed in a well-ness exam to determineone's physical health, anowner can determine thefinancial health of the farmbusiness based on financialratios calculated from anaccurate balance sheet.One of the more popularfinancial ratios is the debt-to-asset ratio. This ratioreveals the amount of debtcompared to the value ofall assets. When this ratioexceeds .50 or 50 percent, itbecomes a concern. Just asa doctor can divert a poten-tially serious illness by not-ing the red flags from awellness exam such is thecase by noting financialratios calculated from abalance sheet. Without awellness exam, the red flagsare not revealed; without abalance sheet, no red flagscan be noted for the farmbusiness.
