Myths About Bar Soap There is a big difference between the
different types of soap. The more expensive the soap the better it
is. Some soaps get you cleaner than others. Vitamin enhanced soaps are better for you.
Comparisons
Lather:* The amount of foam depends more on whether you have hard or soft water, not on the type of soap it is. (Hard water produces more suds)
Comparisons, cont. Fragrance:
* Fragrance is nice to have, but it only adds to the cost of the soap.* Scent wears off quickly.* Many fragrances cause skin irritation,
especially on sensitive skin.
Comparisons, cont. Melting:
* Some soaps turn into “mush” after being left in water over some time.
* Worst: Dial and Tone* Best: Irish Spring and Oil of Olay
Consumer Reports Overall Ratings
Consumer Tips Shop for price. Don’t get caught up in all the ads and
pretty packaging. Don’t buy strongly scented soaps if you
have sensitive skin.
Facial Moisturizers Dry vs. oily skin Occlusive ingredients clog pores Fragrances can cause irritation Water vs. oil-based products Look for sunscreens (minimum of SPF 15) Using body lotion on face
Alpha Hydroxy Acids Loosen bonds that hold dead cells Keep newer, moister skin near the surface May irritate sensitive skin Use of AHA’s makes skin more sensitive
to the sun and should be used with sunscreen
Body Lotions Humectants (glycerin) trap moisture from
the air Emollients/Occlusives (petroleum jelly and
lanolin) keep moisture from leaving skin Too much hand-washing can cause dry
skin. Apply lotion after showering
Consumer Reports Overall Ratings
Consumer Tips Apply after washing Know your skin type Look for sunscreens in facial moisturizers Although the term is not regulated, you
should still look for products saying “noncomedogenic”
Questionable Claims Wrinkle Creams
* Wrinkles are inevitable and impossible to take away* You can only temporarily make them look smaller with moisturizers, primer, or Botox* Put eye creams in the fridge* Some creams cost up to $30 or more* Creams cannot slow aging process, repair sun-
damaged skin, or make you look younger.
More Questionable Claims Many products say they’re enriched with
vitamins, aloe vera, etc The term “hypoallergenic” is not regulated Some moisturizers claim to “penetrate 7
layers deep” Advertising “appearance vs. structure”

The Wonderful World of Acne To better find an effective acne product,
one must have a basic understanding of acne itself (its causes, cycles, factors, etc.)
You must also know your skin type
Causes Clogging of the sebaceous glands Hormones stimulate sebaceous glands
(especially during puberty) Anti-epileptic drugs mess up endocrine
secretions Heredity Diet is not a factor (especially chocolate)
Cycles When skin is too dry (from washing or
other products), the glands produce oil to compensate for the loss of moisture. Too much of this oil, especially if dead skin cells are present, can clog pores and cause acne.
Squeezing or “popping zits” can make your condition worse or make them come back.
2 Common Acne Products Salicylic Acid-usually found in liquid cleansers
and have an orangey color Especially good for treating blackheads (the black
spot is not dirt, it’s dead skin cells mixed with oil and sebum)
Washing twice daily with salicylic acid and warm water will temporarily remove debris and dry up excessive oil
Easy to find and pretty inexpensive
Acne Products, cont. Benzoyl Peroxide-white in color and
usually found in creams or cream cleansers Easy to find and inexpensive Excellent at drying up oil and cell turnover,
but doesn’t really lift debris Can dry face out too much (5% and 10%) Bleaches your skin, but it can also bleach
your hair, clothes, and towels.
Other Remedies Pore strips can help lift debris, but adhesive is
usually left behind on the skin causing irritation or clogging of pores
Witch Hazel contains alcohol which is excellent in drying skin, but can be too strong
Masque/clay treatments can dry oil and lift debris, but some ingredients can cause irritation
Prescription drugs can be prescribed (antibiotics, cleansers, creams, gels, Ortho-Tri-Cyclen, etc.)
Visine constricts blood vessels
Remedies, cont. Wash face twice daily with warm water Shampoo hair regularly if not daily Use water-based cosmetics Refrain from touching face Shield face when using hairspray

2 Alternatives to Plastic Surgery
Botox Treatments
Collagen Enhancements
Botox Botox is a non-surgical procedure that
temporarily reduces the intensity of wrinkles by injecting bovine protein into the muscles.
Muscles around the eyes contract from facial expressions and after time remain contracted.
Botox blocks the nerve impulses which make the muscle contract so the muscle relaxes and eases the wrinkles
Treatment Procedure No anesthetic is used--most patients
compare injection to a bug bite A tiny micro-needle is used to inject a very
small amount of protein into certain locations on the face
Side Effects Temporary bruising Headache and other pains Respiratory infections Flu symptoms Drooping muscles Dysphagia Arrhythmia Death
Pros and Cons Pros:
* Fast (10 min.)* Easy* Available* Wrinkle size decreased

face to build up underlying strength and fill most facial furrows
Can only be done after a 4-week testing period to determine sensitivity
2 weeks between injections
Side Effects Can be painful Connective tissue diseases Flu Blurred vision Difficulty breathing
Disadvantages Doesn’t last forever Expensive Not for everyone Risk of adverse side effects
