WHAT IS A BUSINESS CASE?
A business case presents a new or renewed program/service/class/staffing and explains why the changes merit investment.
In essence it is an argument, presented in a documented format, and is intended to convince a decision maker to approve some kind of action.
10
WHERE BUSINESS CASE IS USED
It is an integral part of planning and fundraising for a community project.
A tool to guide the evaluation of a project.
Provides evidence that the project is a good investment for the community, funding partners, and government funding programs.
11
ELEMENTS OF A BUSINESS CASE
A business case serves four purposes:
- Helps to see a project systematically, in a step-by-step manner;
- Explains why a project should be undertaken;
- Helps potential funding partners understand the economic value of the project;
- Provides a framework for completion of the project on time and on budget.
12
Important elements to remember when writing a business case
Why is the project needed? (Issues and Opportunities)
How will the effort solve the issues or opportunities facing the organization?
What is the recommended solution(s)?
How does the solution address the issues or opportunities (benefits)?
What will happen to the business if it is not undertaken?
When will the solutions be deployed?
How much money, people, and time will be needed to
deliver the solutions and realize the benefits?
