Pick up a hammer and join Community Ministries for a trip to LouisianaGot plans for Spring Break? How about God Plans?Community Ministries is picking up and headed east to Louisiana over Spring Break (March 13-17) to assist in the ongoing recovery after fall floods devastated the area in and near Baton Rouge. (March 13) and pull back into the church lot sometime late Friday (March 17). In the mean-time, we will find lodging in an area Methodist church; find hospitality among the residents of this beautiful community; and find God in the eyes of those we serve, those we meet, and those on our team.

On Jan. 15, Wayne Mathews was commissioned as a new Stephen Minister, and on Feb. 12 Nancy Goodhue was commissioned as a new Stephen Leader (photo at right). Both have received train-ing—Wayne, 50 hours to equip him to minister to hurting people; and Nancy, a weeklong training to equip her in organizing, teaching, and supervising our Stephen Ministers.

The common goal of Stephen Ministry is to bring love and care to hurting people. Join us in praying for Wayne and Nancy in their roles within Stephen Ministry.

Red Cross shelter training to beoffered at Oak Hill UMC March 5Oak Hill UMC is in the process of becoming an available emergency shelter through the Red Cross. Should a local emergency arise that requires area folks to be displaced from their homes, Oak Hill UMC has agreed to be a welcoming site of relief. We are looking for volunteers interested in serving in this capacity. Since we are partnering with Red Cross and local law enforcement, ourrole is primarily one of hospitality—setting upFellowship Hall with bedding, sorting snacks,serving/cleaning up after prepared meals, andproviding emergency personal supplies to guests.

Volunteer training is provided and required inorder to participate. Peter Wittenburg, a member of Oak Hill UMC and a coordinator of Red Cross services, will provide volunteer training onSunday, March 5, at 12:30 p.m. in Room A201.

If you are interested in learning more, pleasecontact the church office, Vicki Matustik([email protected]), or write“Red Cross” on the back of your attendance card.

I heard a story about Mother Teresa when she was beginning her ministry to the poor and dying in Calcutta, India. She had taken a plate of food to a woman who was trying to keep herself and family alive. The woman thanked her for the food and quickly scraped half of it into a pot. Then she started for the door, at which point Mother Teresa asked her where she was going. The woman told her that her neighbor was also hungry.
