Kol Torah - The Sweet Sound of Torah
A nyone who has spent time in a yeshiva is aware that the
learning environment is intense, animated and noisy. R'
Naftali Tzvi Yehudah Berlin (1817-1893), better known as the
Netziv (the acronym of his name), Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshiva of
Volozhin in Lithuania, used to live downstairs from the beis
medrash of Volozhin. Above his meagre home, the bochurim
would learn late into the night . The kol Torah ( the noise of peo-
ple engaged in learning ) was, needless to say, quite loud. Some-
one once asked the Netsiv how he managed to sleep with all the
noise, and he replied with the following moshol: A stranger who
passes by a mill hears the grinding of the gears, wheels and mill
stones. The noise is deafening. He wonders how the miller can
bear to live next to it and manage to sleep - yet the miller sleeps
very well. Indeed, the noise of the mill is for him the sweetest
noise. In fact were the mill to suddenly stop he would be startled
and wake up. The reason is that the sound of the mill is the sound
of the miller's livelihood. As long as it runs he knows that he has
food to eat. The Netsiv continued:
- Torah is my livelihood. It is the sustenance for my life. For this
reason the sound of Torah is the sweetest of sounds to my ears.
May HaShem make the sound of Torah sweet in our ears this Sha-
vuos.
Good Shabbos, Rabbi Cohen
