IMHX REVIEW www.hsssearch.com

By its nature, change is gradual inlogistics as very significantinvestments are needed and they

tend to have considerable knock-onimplications that need to be thoughtthrough. So IMHX - a large show thatcomes around every three years - is agreat benchmark.

IMHX had plenty of food for thoughon the direction of travel withinlogistics.

This was most pronounced inautomation. IMHX is a show dominatedby large forklift manufacturers and itwas striking to see how much emphasisthey were placing on automated andsemi-automated solutions.

Toyota Material Handling had thelargest stand at the show and among thehighlights for Toyota were a BT OptioOSE250 – a low level order picker –which came with remote drive. Themanufacturer also had an automatedreach truck on show, and dazzledvisitors with its Future Technologytour – giving a peak at tomorrow’s worldin terms of handling technology.

The stand of Linde Material Handlingfeatured an automation zone focusing

on its relationship with robotics firmBalyo, Linde’s partners in engineeringthe next generation of automated trucks.Plus the show came only a few monthsafter Linde’s parent company KionGroup bought automation providerDematic (who were also at IMHX). Thisopens up even more dramaticpossibilities for Linde to workautomated elements into its offering inthe UK. Indeed Linde revealed at theshow that a major UK grocer had askedLinde to work with Dematic prior to theacquisition deal being announced.

Crown unveiled two interestingdevelopments in semi-automation. Oneis an alternative to standard VNA andfeatures Auto Positioning Systemtechnology on its TSP Series turrettrucks. The truck operator does not haveto navigate the truck from location tolocation and can focus on picking. Thisadds efficiency and evens out theperformance difference betweenseasoned and novice forklift operators.

The company has also diversified itsglove-based remote control technology. It launched Quick Pick Remote to muchsuccess at IMHX 2013 and now versions

are available for remote gloved controlof stackers (Quick Lift) and also tocommand tow tractor trains to feedproduction lines - good developments ofan already impressive technology.

Similarly the Jungheinrich easyPILOTon the ECE horizontal order pickersignificantly improves pickingperformance while relieving strain onthe driver. The truck automaticallymoves with the operator and stops assoon as he uses the remote control orreaches a pre-defined destination.

ForkliftsIn terms of conventional lift trucks, afew models stood out. Toyota unveiledthe world premiere of its new BT ReflexRRE reach truck range promising toplevel performance.

Meanwhile Doosan showcased 16trucks on its stand, including the latestof its 7-series models. Prominent on thestand was the new Doosan 25-tonnediesel forklift, which is aimed at the steelindustry, ports, container and cabinhandling and heavy manufacturingindustries. The manufacturer hasalready sold its first model to GeneralElectric at Heathrow.

Maxing the cubeThe show also highlighted innovation inspecialist trucks designed to manoeuvrein very limited space - key products nowmost logistics operations are facingspace constraints of one type oranother.
