The 2012 Photo Books are finally
here. Last year many of you had your
pictures taken by Owens Mills. Many
have asked what happened to the photo
book and I am happy to report the books
are here and you can pick them up any
time the Activity Office is open. The
book is free for those who participated
in the photo shoot.
This is not just a Photo Directory but
it is also a Pictorial of our community as
well. Communications Committee
members Carol Yost and
Peggy Malsom are
responsible for putting the
pictorial together and the
photos of our Village in
all of its beauty. When
you see Carol & Peggy,
please thank them for
all their hard work on
this project.

Recent Architectural Revisions, FYIHave you recently gotten a letter stating you are not in compliance with Architectural
regulations? Perhaps the Architectural Committee has changed some of the standards and
you were not aware of the changes. Not everyone can keep up with all the changes ocurring
in our Village so we will try to update you when these changes occur. The most recent
changes occurred at a meeting of the Board of Directors when Al Lehman made a motion to
approve four Architectural Revisions: 3.4.2 Landscaping; 3.2.9.4 Replacement Windows;
3.2.13 Patio Covers; and 3.2.24 Replacement Windows, Sun Screens & Window Tinting.
This month we have the Landscaping revision for your information.
3.4.2 Landscaping. All landscaping shall be well maintained and kept free of debris.
Plants in the front or side yards visible from the street shall not be covered or encased with
any type of fencing material. Excess plant growth shall be pruned, trimmed or removed to
prevent overgrowth. Trees shall be pruned or trimmed in a manner that will present a
pleasing appearance and avoid visual obstruction to traffic. Trees shall not infringe on
adjacent owners property. Weeds shall not be allowed to accumulate and may be controlled
by periodic application of a pre-emergent weed killer.

Some of the groups that depend on this equipment are: the Chorus, the Theater
Group, the Follies, guest entertainers, Tues. Morning Coffee and News, Board Mtgs.,
Happy Hour, Bingo and the many activities that occur throughout the year. If you
belong to a group that depends on these services please help us find volunteers.
We will be glad to train you and you can tell us when you are available to assist.

SRP WARNS OF TELEPHONE FRAUDOn September 6, 2012 SRP customers were issued a warning of fraudulent telephone
schemes where the scammers are identifying themselves as SRP employees and asking for
credit card or banking information. These imposters call and ask for payment so the
customers can avoid having their power disconnected. SRP wants everyone to know they
do not call customers and ask for credit card numbers or personal information. SRP has
reported the activity to the Federal Trade Commission. If there is any doubt, call SRP

August was the month of
committee meetings for me.
We had several meetings
with the Five Year Planning Committee as

the list of projects and the final
proposals have gone to the Board
for their approval. I will be
excited to tell you all the details
as soon as the Board
approves the projects.
Meanwhile we all have to
have patience, I think it
will be worth it.

25 years, appearing on stage, television and movies. She’s lent
her voice to hundreds of radio commercials, sung every type of
music and performed at major resorts throughout Arizona, but
comedy has always been one of her special talents. Jan has
performed at both the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los
Angeles and kept audiences laughing at hundreds of venues
throughout the Southwest, appearing as one of her many
hilarious characters. One of the very best is “Ruthy the
Baglady”. Based on the unforgettable “Little Old Lady on the

“Laugh-In”. For quality, professional entertainment and a

Dear Amy:
I’m an animal lover, but this summer I’ve
become convinced that the situation is out of
control. My mother lives in a formerly clean
senior apartment complex. Now it seems like
every person has a “service” dog. The carpet in
the hallway, elevator and common area is
stained and the place smells. What’s the deal
with people in wheelchairs and using walkers
who are barely able to care for themselves now
having pets they can’t care for?
Signed: Disgusted pet lover
Dear Disgusted:
First, take a deep breath. Second, take a chill pill. It sounds like
your experience this summer was stressful. That’s exactly what all
the dogs you encountered are meant to lessen. My late father-in-
law’s anxiety increased as his dependency on oxygen increased.
His doctor recommended a therapy or “companion” dog for him.
They got an adorable Shi Tzu named Fonzy who became his
“service” dog. These animals bring emotional support and
comfort, relief from loneliness and depression and can even
become part of a person’s health-care plan. As such they often
meet the requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1990. Therefore they are allowed to accompany their owners
anywhere without restriction. That’s why they were in your
mother’s apartment complex.
As for the cleanliness aspect, I trust you spoke with the
management there. If their response wasn’t satisfactory it is
probably time to look around for other accommodations. I know
my mother moved twice before finding the right place where she is
now happy. Good luck.
Dear Amy:
We watch our MBV neighbor’s house for them over the summer
while they are gone. They always bring us a gift as a thank you. While
we appreciate the thought, we really don’t need another piece of rock art
for the yard or a hand-made nic nac from the craft show up north. Can
you please tell me what I should say to discourage them from bringing
me another dish towel with a moose on it?
Signed: Watchful Neighbor
Dear Neighbor:
I think you are doing a fine job. I haven’t seen any moose on
the loose in MBV all summer. Now as for keeping them off your
kitchen towels and back up north where they belong, here’s your
letter and hopefully it will help. To all those who are not paying
someone to watch your house in MBV but are instead depending
on the kindness of neighbors, here’s a hint: gift cards are always
appropriate.
For answers to those annoying little nagging, goading, piquant, timely questions, send your emails to Dear Amy at theMountaineer, [email protected] or write them out and leavethem at the MBV office. Then look with unabated anticipation foryour answers to appear in the following month’s issue. It might.
Dear Amy
A SpecialAnniversary!Pam Burks
It has been seventy years. Can you
imagine being married for seventy years?
The story begins in 1942 in Everett
Washington where Virgil and Alice Hedland
met, and later married. Virgil and Alice met
on a blind date and they knew right then
and there they were made for each other.
Who said blind dates don’t work out?
Virgil and Alice will say they do, and after
70 years of marriage it is undisputable that
blind dates do work out.
Their romance was interrupted by
WWII, when Virgil entered the U.S. Air
Force. It was a difficult time for Alice
because in those days the location of your
loved one was considered classified. She
never knew where her beloved rested his
head at night. After the war she found out
he had been stationed in China/Burma
where he contracted malaria.
They lived in Washington state first and
then moved to Hemet CA. During that time
they became winter visitors here in AZ and
for many years vacationed at a lovely
retirement community in Yuma, where they
golfed a lot.
They had one daughter, Barbara Skene,
she brought them two beautiful
grandchildren, Summer and Tiffany who
gave them great grandchildren, Brody,
Hudson, Madison and Pierce. Daughter
Barbara moved to the Gold Canyon area
approximately 10 years ago when she
retired and that is when our couple moved
to Gold Canyon. Barbara found them a
lovely home here in MountainBrook on the
Golf course.
They have enjoyed a full and happy life
together, always sharing and caring. They
have golfed, danced, played and loved.
They have slowed down a bit these days,
taking time to enjoy family and friends.
They love to stay informed on the activities
and events in MountainBrook Village, they
stay tuned in to local, state and world news
and events. You can find them at
MountainBrook’s “Coffee and News” every
Tuesday with their friends (and sometimes
on the casino bus). They are a breath of
fresh air because of the love, smiles and
friendship they express. Happy
Anniversary to a very lovely couple!

Artist of the MonthPierre (Pete) Franklin FoodyPierre (Pete) Franklin Foody was a member in good standing of the
MountainBrook Ceramic Group. Until illness curtailed his activities, Pete created,
taught, and helped fire our ceramic pieces. In MBV the Ceramic Group works with
bodies of clay that are formed in plaster molds. After the clay has “set” the mold is
removed and the artist then cleans off mold lines, and through various firings and
painting develops his/her masterpiece. Pete’s unique specialty would be to
approach a plain clay body and carve ‘out’ one or more figures on it. This entailed
many hours removing the clay around his designs with special tools so that the
piece wouldn’t break and so that the design was raised above the base. His
favorite designs were Southwestern in nature but he experimented with Landscape
Scenes also. After the piece was fired he would paint and glaze and fire again. He
won Best of Show at the Phoenix Doll and Ceramic Show each time he entered.
Pete exercised his creative genes in New Jersey from 1929 until he arrived in Arizona in 1990, planning and making
furniture, houses, all manner of things. He expected to go back to work as a construction superintendent to support his
new retirement but instead he was able to take up ceramics as an outlet for this creativity. Pete took classes to learn about
the products he could use and then developed his techniques for working on pre-formed ceramic bodies. Along the way
Pete became a “certified” Ceramic Instructor sharing his techniques with various ceramic groups across the Valley until he
became ill. His body gave out on April 10th but his spirit will live on in his work.
There was a bus full of fun on the MazatzalCasino bus trip. August is the perfect month to
visit Payson and the pool too!

MOUNTAINBROOK
SPECIALIST
Peggy MalsomIt’s not the worst summer of my life.
That was when I was ten years old. I fell
out of a tree and broke my arm. That’s not
the worst part. Nobody noticed that it was
broken for three days. That’s not the worst
part. When someone finally noticed I was
doing all my chores (gathering eggs,
feeding the calves, cows, pigs and
chickens) with one arm, they took me to the
doctor who put a cast on my broken arm.
That’s not the worst part either. The worst
part was when I dropped a pail in the hog
feed barrel and forgot I had a cast on my
arm. I automatically grabbed for the pail
with both hands. The slop, a mixture of
grain and reject dairy milk, splashed up to
my armpits and down into my cast. I
realized my mistake way too late. I stuck a
garden hose down the cast to try to wash
out the “slop.” There isn’t a smell to
compare to sour milk in the summer time. I
still had four more weeks to wear that cast.
That was the worst part.
No, this summer isn’t that bad, but we
are counting the days to get back to our
home in MountainBrook Village. We have
dealt with an incompetent caregiver,
inconvenient road delays, recalcitrant
ageing parents, and an unrepentant, packrat
Washington neighbor.
On the brighter side, we fired the
caregiver, moved one parent, set up the
other so he doesn’t have to move, and
simply waited out the road delays along
with everyone else. Our son became
engaged and a daughter flew the Secretary
of State on a mission. Can’t say any more
about that except we are proud of her – and
him – and the other two as well. Now
we’re heading south while it is still way too
hot in Arizona.
This post is coming from Jackson,
Wyoming, formerly known as Jackson
Hole. That was before movie stars and
other moguls moved here, changed the
name and pushed the real estate prices into
the stratosphere. We came here from Sun
Valley, Idaho, where the same thing
happened without the necessity of a name
change. Apparently place names ending
with “Valley” have more cache than those
ending with “Hole.” Just passing through
makes me feel like we are asking to be hit
with an ugly stick. Next we can drive
through Park City, Utah, then head for
Sedona before arriving home depressed and
out of sorts. Or we can detour through
some not so nice places. Excuse me for
stepping on toes, but have you been to
Pecos, Texas, lately? How about Camden,
NJ? It’s so bad that it is off limits to our
own military personnel! I’m not trying to
make anyone mad, I’m just saying, after
driving through Pecos or Camden by the
time you pull into your own driveway, it
looks pretty darn good.
I don’t know about you, but heat or no
heat, I can’t wait to make the turn off
Highway 60 onto MountainBrook Drive.
No matter what kind of summer I’ve had,
when I see that mountain, Honey – I’m
home!!!

Book DiscussionChar Peterson
We meet from 1-2 PM in the Mesquite
room every second Wednesday of the
month October thru April.
On October 10,2012, Char Peterson
will lead a discussion on the book “Da
Vinci’s Ghost” by Toby Lester. A story of
a genius, obsession, and how Leonardo
created the world in his own image. More
than 500 years after da Vinci inked the
figure 13x9 of Mona Lisa this image is
world famous. Much of da Vinci’s life is
undocumented so this author filled in the
blanks based on circumstantial evidence
and some educated guesses. It is a 5 star
book.
On November 14, 2012, Carl Scheie
will lead the discussion on the book “In
the Garden of the Beast” by Eric Larsen.
Set in Berlin in 1933 when President
Roosevelt named a mild mannered
professor William Dodd to be
ambassador to Nazi Germany. His
daughter, Martha, an indiscriminate flirt
and romantic young woman who learns
about terror. Full of suspense and tension.
Best seller.
Books being considered for December
12th are either "Killing Lincoln, the
Shocking Assasination that Changed
America Forever” by Bill O’Reilly and
Martin Dugard or the book "The Lone
Wolf" by Jodi Picoult. On October 10th
it will be determined which book it will be
discussed.
On January 9, 2013, Stanley York will
lead a discussion on author James
Patterson and his books. Patterson is a
great mystery writer and you will find
many of his books in your MBV library.
It is not necessary to have read the book
nor vital to participate. You are invited to
walk in and enjoy a lively discussion.
There is no signed membership, just enjoy
a good discussion.
PINOCHLEPinochle is played by three
MountainBrook groups
each week. Each group meets
in the Sunset Room. Women play
Tuesdays at 1 pm. A double deck group
plays Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. And the
traditional pass-three-cards group meets
Thursdays at 7 pm. Three Thursday
players recently achieved 600+ scores,
Richard Young had 646, Mary Jane
Johnson had 633, and Barb Hofmeister
had 630.
Newcomers are always welcome. Just
show up by about ten minutes before the
scheduled start of play; that helps with
setup. You will find cordial folks who
will help you adapt to our style of play.

RECURRING DAILY ACTIVITIES: UPDATED MARCH 2012
Life Story Writing is easy, once you know how.Do you wish you knew more about your
parent’s lives? What about your
grandparents? Do you know how they met,
what struggles they had to deal with or about
their schooling and work? It helps you to
understand yourself when you know where
they came from and what good and bad
things shaped their lives. How did your mom
learn to cook or sew? Where did your father
learn his trade? If these are questions you
wish you had the answers to then promise
yourself you won’t leave your children and
grandchildren in the dark. Write your life
story.
Barb Hofmeister, a resident of
MountainBrook Village, has been teaching
classes on life story writing since 2005 here
at MBV and around the valley. She will be
teaching two classes here starting the first
week of October. Each class will meet one
day a week for eight weeks. It is an easy
step by step process and you will be
amazed at how fast your story progresses.
For the classes here at MountainBrook
please sign up in the office. You do not
need to pay until the first class. For the
class at Mountain View, please call Barb
to register. Her number to register for the
Thursday class or if you have any questions
is 480-288-9745. Each class is limited to 20
so don’t delay in signing up.
Writing the Story of Your Life 101 is the
beginning class and you will be excited with
your progress. This class will begin on
Friday, October 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the
Mesquite Room and will continue every
Friday for 8 weeks. There is a one-time
charge of $35.00 which includes your text
book.
Writing the Story of Your Life 201 is the
advanced class and will also begin on
October 5 in the Mesquite room at
MountainBrook but the time for this class
will be 3 to 5p.m. The prerequisite for this
class is that you must have attended one of
Barb's classes before. The charge for this
class is only $20 to cover the cost of
handouts.
If Friday is not a good day for you feel free
to register for the other class which is also set
to begin the first week of October.
Writing the Story of Your Life 101 will
begin Thursday, October 4, 1:00 to 3:00 at
Mountain View Lutheran Church on
Goldfield Rd. This is the beginning class and
the charge is $35.00 which includes the text
book. There will be no class on
Thanksgiving.
