SENSORS IN MEDICINE 2014
Sensor technology is having a significant impact on healthcare practice. From critical point-of-care, to diabetes monitoring, cancer and infectious disease diagnosis through to lifestyle changes for better health, sensor applications are at the fore front. Sensors in Medicine is an international conference series which brings together leading academics, clinicians and commerce to explore these exciting applications and their impact in healthcare.
This slide presentation provides a flavor of Sensors in Medicine 2014 for the benefit of those who were unable to attend, and to introduce the conference series to everyone who is considering joining us in 2015.

Affordable sensors to detect microorganisms using reagentless and label-less impedance spectroscopy
Summary
• Impedance spectroscopy and low cost screen printing used to detect presence of P. aeruginosa.
• The electrodes are not modified (i.e. no reagents or labels are used)
• Significant changes occur to the impedance after 24 hrs growth of P. aeruginosa. Changes are related to the presence of phenazine electroactive metabolites such as pyocyanin, which are not produced by S. aureus, H. influenzaeor C. albicans.
• Analysing the whole impedance spectrum could result in changes that are characteristic of other microorganisms.

It’s great to hear that you’ll be holding a Sensors in Medicine 2015. My colleagues Dr Heather Murton and Dr Jenny Hannant came back with nothing but praise for the conference. We expect to be able to live demos of our Handheld Molecular Diagnostic Lab by the time 2015 rolls around, so please do keep us in mind for speaker opportunities.
