FAN FOOD Not Fast Food!FAN FOOD Not Fast Food!TMTM
When she was six years old, Jean Vogels Aunt
Irene Dess handed her a sewing needle and
began to teach her to sew. This ignited a pas-
sion in her which motivated the art of sewing.
Today, Jean is a talented and accomplished
seamstress & quilter.
Three years ago Jean felt isolated and a bit
lonely. She had little family support and fewfriends, but what she did have was her talent.
Instead of going down the road of depression,
she decided if she were to get involved in the
community in a charitable way, things would
change.
She walked into the Berkeley Senior Center
and asked a simple question: Do you need a
Quilting teacher? The answer was yes and
a weekly Quilting class began with about 8 par-
ticipants. It was imperative to her to share her
craft and give it away to others.
Since then, every Thursday afternoon from
1:00 pm to approximately 3:00 pm over a dozen
quilters enjoy Jeans class at Berkeley Senior
Center, ranging from beginners to advanced.
Because of her encouraging approach and
the charitable way of donating her time andexpertise, she has taught and inuenced many
people in a positive way.
The quilters work on many creative projects
for themselves and others. Each year they
donate a handmade Queen Size quilt to the
Center which is rafed off at the Senior Picnic.
The proceeds from the Quilt rafe go directly
back to the Center to benet the Activities De-partment.
They also make quilted centerpieces for the
dining hall and a Christmas Wall Hanging.
In 2014, in addition to donating a quilt to BSS
for the Senior Picnic, which is held in October,
the Quilting Class plans to donate a handmade
quilt to Martinsburg Hospice.
Beyond all that, the quilters have taken trips
together to Lancaster, Pa. and Northern Virginia
to shop for fabric and supplies. Through this
group of women, not only is the long tradition of
quilting in America sustained into the 21st cen-
tury, but a bond between friends is intertwined
as well.
Jeans decision to pull herself up from her
bootstraps and get involved literally changed
her life and the lives of others. Through mento-ring & teaching the craft of quilting, she reaches
people beyond the walls of Berkeley Senior
Center. We consider it an honor to have Jean
Vogel as a volunteer and teacher.
The quilting class welcomes all newcomers to
their group. Please call 304-263-8873 ext. 117
or ext. 106 for more information.

What Is Dementia?
Dementia is not a specic disease. Its a generic term
that describes a wide range of symptoms -memory loss, confusion, behavior changes, personality changes - severeenough to affect everyday activities. Alzheimers disease
accounts for 60 to 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is the second most common de-mentia type. There are many other conditions that can causesymptoms of dementia, including some that are reversible,
such as thyroid problems and vitamin deciencies. Dementia
is often incorrectly referred to as senility or senile demen-tia, which reects the incorrect belief that serious mental
decline is a normal part of aging. It is not.
While symptoms of dementia can vary greatly,at least twoof the following mental functions must be signicantly im-
paired to be considered dementia:
Memory
Communication and language
Ability to focus and pay attention
Reasoning and judgment
Visual perception
People with dementia may have problems with short-term
memory - keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments ortraveling out of the neighborhood.
Many dementias start out slowly and gradually get worse. If you or a loved one is having memory difculties or other
changes in thinking skills, dont ignore them. Call your doctor;get an evaluation soon. The doctor may nd a treatable con-dition. Even if symptoms suggest dementia, early diagnosis
allows a person to get the maximum benet from available
treatments. It also provides time to plan for the future.
Berkeley Senior Services offers a variety of support for thosebeing effected by Dementia. Both training and support
groups are available for families dealing with a loved onesuffering from this diagnosis. For more information, please
