international business since 2007. SATEL consists of several divisions consisting of Satel Construction,

SATEL Green Energy, SATEL Investment & Real Estate, SATEL Urban Development, KWG Trading,

Before expansion, SATEL management operated under the name Kwadder Al-Watan Group (KWG)

which was established in 1992. KWG was a leading business group, engaged in diversified business in

In 2007 it successfully reached its first year-mark in operations, fully meeting production outlooks. This past year, the company continued to develop its 356- MW Wind Plan in the Valencia Community and was given authorization to begin construction on the first 66.7 MW in the province of Valencia. Enerfín also worked heavily in development abroad throughout the 2007 fiscal year. The company dedicated a significant share of its efforts to studying the Canadian, Mexican and U.S. markets, applying the experience it had acquired with the Brazil Wind Farms to the search for new business opportunities elsewhere. Wave energy is essentially stored, concentrated wind energy, the waves being created by the progressive transfer of energy from the wind as it blows over the surface of the water. Wave energy could play a major part in the world’s efforts to combat climate change, potentially displacing 1 – 2 billion tones of CO2 per annum from conventional fossil fuel generating sources. Such installations would also provide many employment opportunities in construction, operations and maintenance. Waves are generated by wind passing over the surface of the sea. As long as the waves propagate slower that the wind speed just above the waves, there is an energy transfer from the wind to the waves. Both air pressure differences between the upwind and the lee side of a wave crest, as well as friction on the water surface by the wind shear stress causes the growth of the waves.

Wave height is determined by wind speed, the duration of time has blowing fetch(the distance over which the wind excites the waves) and by the depth and topography of the seafloor (which can focus or disperse the energy of the waves).

A given wind speed has matching practical limit over which time or distance will not produce larger waves. When this limit has been reached the sea is said to be “Fully Developed”.

In general, larger waves are more powerful but wave power is also determined by wave speed, wavelength and water density.

Oscillatory motion is highest at the surface and diminishes exponentially with depth.However,for standing waves (clapotis) near a reflecting coast, wave energy as also present a pressure oscillations at great depth, producing microseisms, These pressure fluctuations as greater depth are too small to be interesting from the point of view of wave power.




The waves propagate on the ocean surface, and the wave energy is also transported horizontally with the group velocity. The mean transport rate of the wave energy through a vertical plane of unit width, parallel to a wave crest, is called the wave energy flux (or wavepower, which must not be confused with the actual power generated by a wave power device).

In fluid dynamics, wind waves or, moreprecisely,wind-generated waves are surface waves that occur on the free surface of oceans,seas,lakes,riyers,and canals or even on small puddles and ponds. They usually result from the wind blowing over a vast enough stretch of fluid surface. Some waves in the oceans can travel thousands of miles before reaching land. Wind waves range in size from small ripples to huge rogue waves. There is little forward motion of individual water particles in a wave, despite the large amount of energy it may carry forward.

When directly being generated and affected by the local winds, a wind wave system is called a wind sea. After the wind ceases to blow, wind waves are called swell. Or more generally, as well consists of wind generated waves that are not – or hardly-affected by the local wind at the same moment. They have been generated elsewhere, or some time ago. Wind waves in the ocean are called ocean surface waves.

Modern Tidal Technology

Wave power devices are generally categorized by the method used to capture the energy of the waves. They can also be categorized by local and power take-off system. Method types are point absorber or buoy, surfacing following or attenuator,terminator,lining perpendicular to wave propagation, oscillating water column, and overtopping Locations are shoreline, near shore and offshore. Types of power take-off include : hydraulic ram, elastomeric hose pump, pump-to-shore, hydroelectric turbine, air turbine and linear electrical generator, Some of these designs incorporate parabolic reflectors as a means of increasing the wave energy at the point of capture. These capture systems use the rise and fall motion of waves to capture energy

In the modern period two major influences have shaped contemporary urban planning in the Middle East: colonialism and petroleum. These two influences, and a host of other minor factors, have had different roles during three phases of constructing urban landscapes: the colonial period (c. 1800 – 1945), a transitional period (c. 1945 – 1972), and the oil-boom era (post-1972). Within these three stages, urban planning has shifted from being primarily involved in physical planning and urban design to integrating socioeconomic and physical planning.

Training Workshops

The one-day workshops are aimed at planning and zoning commissioners, zoning board of adjustment members, city council members, city staff, and citizens. The purpose of the workshops is to familiarize attendees with the fundamentals of urban planning and land use law as practiced in Texas. Each workshop begins with an overview of the concept of urban planning and the planning process. Various forms or styles of planning are discussed. State planning law is addressed. The role, responsibilities, and legal basis of both the planning commission and the zoning board of adjustment are covered in detail. FOOD Distribution:

Saudi consumers are discriminating consumers and they enjoy new food products. Saudi buying and eating habits have changed significantly since the introduction of Western-style supermarkets and restaurants in the late 1970s. Built initially to cater to Western expatriates, modern Western-style Class A supermarkets and hypermarkets are popular with the Saudis and continue to increase in number in the major urban areas of the Kingdom: Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Al Khobar, Dhahran, Madina, Mecca, Taif, Tabuk, Abha, Jubail, Yanbu, Buraydah, Hail and other major cites.

An increasing number of Saudis shop regularly at supermarkets, especially women. The retail sector now accounts for over 60% of all food purchases in the Kingdom with the balance in the wholesale sector. Supermarket shopping is considered a primary form of entertainment for the Saudi family. Many supermarkets have built large play areas for children and are surrounded by several boutiques, photo booths, music shops, barber shops and fast food restaurants.

The recent increase in the number of outlets in the organised supply chain, and the larger average size of outlets, has made it feasible for many supermarket chains to import a portion of their stock directly from the US or Europe. The number of 'upmarket' supermarkets continues to increase, creating greater opportunities to display new-to-market international food products. In this respect the newer entrants such as Géant and Max Discount Center have had an influence on the supply chain. Nevertheless, supermarket chains and other retailers depend largely on local importers for sourcing, merchandising and inventory control.

The food importing industry is equipped with modern climate controlled warehouses, cold storage facilities, fleets of refrigerated trucks and a plentiful supply of employees. About 80% of all food items sold in retail outlets are imported as consumer-ready products. The balance is manufactured locally (made predominantly with imported ingredients).

Private label: Some large Saudi importers pack foodstuffs under their own brand names locally and in foreign countries. The firms have developed private labels appealing to Saudis and other Arabs in the Kingdom. Others use labels with Western-sounding names to appeal to UK, Americans, and other Western and non-Arab expatriates. Salim Basamah Company, perhaps the largest importer of grocery products in Saudi Arabia, places its private label 'Goody' on a wide variety of food products imported from the US. Goody appeals to expatriates as well as to Saudis due to its Western-sounding name. Basamah's cousin, also a large food importer and significant food processor, uses an Arabic sounding private label 'Al-Alali' to appeal to Saudis and Arabs, even though a significant percentage of his products are also US origin. Hence products can be marketed in Saudi Arabia under several different labels, private label (Western or Arabic) or branded.




Sole agency agreements: Some importers deal with global food companies manufacturing and marketing major brands such as Heinz, Knorr, Kellogg’s, Campbell Soup, Budweiser non-alcoholic beer and usually require sole agency agreements. The Saudi importers will help build the brand, but request support from the brand holder. Assistance offered by the brand owner includes promotional and marketing assistance.

Foreign based consolidators: Some companies import a wide range of food products for mass distribution, employing the use of overseas consolidators. Many of the consolidators are sole regional agents of major manufacturers or brand owners covering the entire Middle East and African regions. Most foreign consolidators assist Saudi food importers by sourcing products from wholesalers and providing services such as placing stickers on labels. Current Saudi regulations allow foreign suppliers to place an Arabic language sticker on the original English language label. The stickers translate key ingredient and product information into Arabic. Stickering is a laborious task and most manufacturers do not want to bother with this at the production line. If a product has performed well in the Saudi market, the brand owner may opt to go beyond the sticker stage and develop a bilingual label in both Arabic and English. For example non-alcoholic Budweiser beer was launched in the Kingdom in 1999 with a red, white, and blue bilingual label. Significant quantities of international origin grocery items found in Saudi supermarkets have stickers.

Direct imports by retailers: The above mentioned French hypermarkets and many local supermarket chains such as Tamimi Markets, especially those with the ability to handle large volumes, are importing directly part of their needs. At least one local company owning a modern supermarket chain imports several containers of food products each month for sale in its stores, lending support to a wide range of brands without a binding agency agreement. Saudi importers are constantly searching for new products, and often request support from suppliers for promotion and advertising. The Saudi consumer is a discriminating consumer, closely examining labels and looking for the best deal. Advertising is considered a necessity to win Saudi consumers. Two-for-one deals are very popular in larger supermarkets in moving near expiry foodstuffs.

Major Saudi supermarkets are in the initial stage of introducing category management. As the system becomes more popular, many product brands that do not perform well will be eliminated. The recent introduction of French hypermarket chains Géant and Carrefour to the Saudi retail market as well as the opening of Hyper Panda have launched a new era of retailing in the Kingdom with the state of the art shopping experience resulting in a fierce head on competition in the Kingdom’s retail sector. Local distributors are typically being asked for listing fees raging from US$2,000 to up US$27,000 depending on the size and power of the distributor. The bigger the distributor, the more power he has to negotiate the least listing fee. In addition to listing fees, distributors are asked to provide specified percentage




rebate on total annual turn over, contribute to advertising campaigns, provide at least 60 day payment terms, and reimbursements for expired items. Distributors authorise retailers to offer special offers to consumer such as 'buy one and get one' free mainly for products with 60 days shelf life remaining.

In terms of local production Saudi Arabia now boasts some of the world's largest dairy production units. Meat processing, water and beverage (fruit juice and carbonated) production, bread, biscuit and confectionery manufacturing have grown so large in recent years that they are meeting most consumer needs. But the major Saudi-owned supermarkets such as Azizia-Panda, Tamimi and Danube all import a significant percentage of dry goods directly, employing consolidators. They import chilled beef and dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables directly from the US, Egypt and India. Chilled beef, strawberries, apples, celery, lettuce and other selected produce are flown in while others arrive by ship in containers.

All major food-producing countries are active in this highly competitive market. The US, France, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand and the Netherlands are major players. But countries like Argentina and Brazil (meat) and China (poultry) have taken large market shares in recent years. Much of their success was due to bans on European meat and dairy products (in place at that time because of fears over BSE and Foot and Mouth).

All consumer ready foodstuffs must arrive at Saudi ports with half shelf life or more remaining. Rapidly growing food-processing sector depends on imported ingredients. Halal certification required for all meat and poultry products exported to Saudi Arabia.

Additional statements on the health certificate accompanying poultry and livestock meat shipments to indicate that the animals slaughtered for export to the Kingdom were not fed animal protein, ruminants and were not treated with growth hormones.

This was the promise made five years ago, which began life as the boldest and most ambitious of schemes. An idea not without risk, requiring substantial financial investment and an impressive learning curve. A plan which from the outset promised to create a brand new area of opportunity and enterprise for both the Saudi economy and its people. SATEL manufacturing is truly established, operating to world class standards and relying for a large part upon Saudi nationals applying their newly acquired knowledge and expertise. Now, with the addition of new capacity, the plant will be capable of producing more refined sugar per annum;

A vital part of our role is to listen to and anticipate the needs of our customers, whether industrial, retail or consumer. To this end, in addition to bulk deliveries of 25 tonnes by tankers or containers, in direct response to customer demand we have developed 1 tonne, 1.25 tonne and 1.5 tonne bags. This flexible, pro-business approach is a core competency marking a significant turning point in the supply of sugar for industry in the Kingdom. Product development is a constant process, with the omestic retail market now equally important. To ensure that total satisfaction is achieved we have instigated a customer satisfaction survey with customer contact forms completed so that we constantly receive valuable feedback.




SATEL's sophisticated competency programme whereby employees are assessed and training is given based on individual needs. At the start of each year, staff create SMARTs, a series of objectives that need to be achieved in the coming months. SMARTs are recorded daily and assessed weekly to monitor progress. 'Big Rocks', a system of task prioritising, is used to achieve the SMARTs and a balanced scorecard is kept to measure objectives against results. Leadership and teamwork is openly encouraged with both a 'Man of the Month' and a 'Team of the Quarter' award as incentive. A crucial factor in our success is the incorporation into our business and process operations of the most advanced information technology. The entire refinery is controlled digitally using software applications that are a role model of reliability and efficiency. Enterprise Resources Planning, Supply Chain Management, Automation Process and Maintenance Management are all carried out using top of the line systems such as Oracle, ORSI and Maximo. Royah, a member of the Savola Group and our IT service provider, is the first ISO 9001:2000 certified IT company in KSA, which ensures that all our processes are fully compliant. The Process Raw Sugar is made up of sugar crystals that have a thin film of impurities on the surface. It is mixed with hot impure syrup which softens the film. This mixture, known as magma, is a dark brown viscous mass. Magma is fed sequentially into centrifuges.

This centrifugal force separates the raw crystals from the impure raw syrup. The sugar is sprayed with water for a few seconds during the spinning, which helps to remove the last traces of impure syrup. The clean raw sugar crystals from these centrifugal machines are then dissolved in water to produce raw melter liquor. This partially purified sugar liquor now goes to the next refining process, carbonatation, which will clarify the liquor and remove some colour.

Milk of lime is mixed with the raw melter liquor. Carbon dioxide (CO2) recovered from the boilers is bubbled through the mixture. The carbon dioxide reacts with the lime to form chalk which attracts the waxes, gums, resins and other impurities in the. The reaction is

Ca(OH)2 + CO2 ------------------> CaCO3 + H2O

The mixture (carbonated liquor) is then passes through filter presses working in parallel which the liquor will be filtered. This removes the chalk and about half of the colour, together with virtually all the fine debris and solid matter. The resulting pressed liquor is then ready for the next stage.




The filtered liquor from Carbonatation is passed through two passes of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) which removes more colour. In USC we have 12 carbon columns to remove the colour from the liquor. The carbon is regenerated in a hot kiln where the colour is burnt off from the carbon. The de-colourised solution is known as fine liquor.




All the previous refining processes have been carried out on liquors that are 60-65% concentration (Brix). An evaporator is used at this stage to remove some of the water prior to crystallisation. The resulting syrup, which is known as evaporated liquor, is about 74% solids.

The fine liquor is fed into large vacuum pans where the sugar crystals are grown. The syrup is heated indirectly by steam to about 80°C where it boils due to the vacuum applied to the vessel. The use of a vacuum and the resulting reduced temperature helps to minimise the creation of colour during the process.

The mixture of sugar crystals and liquor (massecuite) is centrifuged to separate the white sugar crystals. The separated liquor which still contains significant amounts of sugar is sent to a second, and then a third crystallisation stage to extract more salable sugar from the syrup.




The separated white sugar crystals discharged from the centrifuges still contain up to 1% moisture. This is removed by passing the sugar into a rotating two-stage dryer, through which filtered, heated air is passed.

The moisture level of the sugar at this stage is about 0.06%. Further drying occurs during conveying to the silos or packing areas and in conditioning silos

The liquor left over from the preparation of white sugar and the washings from the affination stage both contain sugar which it is economic to recover. They are therefore sent to the recovery house which operates rather like a raw sugar factory, aiming to make a sugar with a quality comparable to the washed raws after the affination stage. As with the other sugar processes, one cannot get all of the sugar out of the liquor and therefore there is a sweet by-product made: refiners' molasses. This is usually turned into a cattle food or is sent to a distillery where alcohol is made.
