Issue No.118 March-Apr 2014 Edited by Ray Raser
President’s Message
The San Diego Chapter is continuing to move forward and make progress. At our March 15 meeting, the Chapter amended by-laws were unanimously approved by the membership. The By-laws had not been updated for about ten years. The By-laws Committee Chairman Compatriot Dr. Robert Fagaly, Compatriot Philip Hinshaw and the San Diego Chapter Board should be commended for their diligent efforts. At the March meeting, Compatriot David Shaffer was given the 15-year member pin, and Compatriot Thomas Francis was inducted. Cadet Chloe Crisostomo, the winner of the JROTC Enhanced Program was presented a JROTC medallion with neck ribbon and certificate. She then read her contest winning speech. She did an outstanding job in her delivery and her message was topical and impressive.
Captain Bruce Linden USN Ret. was the featured speaker and gave an informative and entertaining talk about the beginnings of the submarine fleet in Coronado and the world’s first seaplane trials in San Diego Bay. Bruce was presented with an SAR certificate of appreciation and challenge coin as a token of our thanks for his presentation. Bruce is the Executive Director of Coronado Historical Society and the author of over forty articles and several books about maritime history. Mark Saturday April 19th on your calendar as Andy Hedekin, Mr. USO will present a program about the mission of USO in San Diego.

History Day SDCOE March 1st & 2nd 2014 at San Diego City College
History Day is an exciting, history-based learning experience for students who not only learn about issues, ideas, people, and events in history but who also apply this learning, through creative and original productions. Students participating in History Day develop valuable research and analytical skills as they process information they've gathered from research of primary and secondary resources, then draw their own conclusions about their topic's significance in history. Next year's topic is Rights and Responsibilities in History. Each year, students from grades 4 through 12 select, develop, and complete standards-based projects focusing on the theme, reflecting local, state, national, and world history. Students may participate as individuals or in groups. All students work with a teacher or coach affiliated with a local school in order to prepare for History Day. Students who compete at county level have the opportunity of qualifying to advance to state level, just as those competing at state level may be selected to compete at national level.

Operation Ancestor Search, a partnership of SAR and Ancestry.com was introduced on April 4, 2014 in a Face to Face Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Session at NMCSD (Balboa Naval Hospital) by Pres. Ray Raser who also serves as the Director of the OAS Program for San Diego area in conjunction of Rick Kincaid, National SAR OAS Director. The event was well attended with over forty in attendance and about half signed up for the one-on-one sessions with volunteers from the San Diego Genealogical Council, an organization of Genealogical Societies and Organizations in the San Diego area. OAS was initially introduced to Wounded Warriors their families and staff at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Washington DC and to San Antonio TX Military Medical Center with good results. Participants receive access to Ancestry.com and volunteers who are familiar with genealogy work together in one-on-one sessions several times a month with the volunteer helping participant search their family tree.
