Introduction: Analysis of Current Conditions (Needs Assessment)George R. Moscone Elementary School723

2001/2002

All staff and Parents looked at the Spring 00 Standford 9 , SABE, IWA, ABC and 3rd grade Math Assessment. This took place at formal staff meetings,SSC/Parent meetings, Parent Conferences and Professional Development days. Jim Stack at Research & Evaluation worked with the Principal and staffon analyzing content clusters in Stanford 9 data. We concluded that Reading Comprehension (Critical Analysis) should be our area of focus for ELLstudents in Grades 3,4 & 5. The IWA also showed the same targeted ELL 4th grade students.

Process for Data Analysis

Parent / Teacher surveys indicate a need to involve and educate parents in the Site Plan process and the core curriculum . Analysis of the SAT 9 and IWAdata indicates a need to improve and expand teaching strategies for delivering differintiated instruction to all students in order to improve readingcomprehension, especially with ELL students in grades 3, 4 & 5.

Introduction: Analysis of Current Conditions (Needs Assessment)George R. Moscone Elementary School723

2001/2002

Moscone’s API for the total school went from 715 in ‘99 to 801 in 2000. The two major disagregated grops of students demonstrated significant growth:Asian : 832 to 860 Latino : 637 to 747 Socially Disadvantaged : 710 - 802. Our 1999 API ranking was an 8 and in 2000 we are a 9. Both years weranked a 10 on similar schools. Our Math and Reading scores were equally high.

Areas of Success/Progress/Achievement

After the staff analyzed the test data by content clusters, we decided to focus on improving strategies for ELL students in grades 3, 4 &5 in readingcomprehension. In addition, Moscone did not test all ELL students in 2000 but we are testing ELLs’ in 2001. There is a need to train teachers inReciprocal Teaching and Strategies that Work techniques in order to improve our delivery of instruction to all students.

2001/2002

Moscone’s Reading Recovery/ DLL / Literacy Group Program has contributed to our improved achievement. This program addresses and provides ourstudents and teachers with an early/ primary intervention program for both English Speakers and ELL students. In addition, the K - 2 grade teachers allparticipated in a site-based developed program in phonics and the State Results program. All these programs have contributed to academic success for allstudents. The Wellness School Grant has also provided Moscone with the services of a part time nurse and counselor. Classroom/ group observationsand surveys validate the success of this program in helping to meet the individual needs of all students.
