Wa-Lo-Co Alumni Newsletter 1
WA LO CO OCTOBER 2018
The Walter L. Cohen Alumni Association (WLCAA) supports Samuel E. Butler, III a Cohen football player. Sam moved from San Diego to New Orleans three (3) years ago after the death of his mother. While the move came with its challenges and obstacles, nothing could have prepared Sam for his current struggles. On February 13, 2018, while enjoying the city’s Mardi Gras celebrations and festivities, Sam was shot in the head. The bullet caused major damage to the right side of his brain and it, along with fragments, still remain lodged in his head. Doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve the pressure from his skull and the fluid accumulated on his brain, necessitating the need to remove a portion of Sam’s skull in order to save his life. Sam was diagnosed with a Bilateral Frontal Subdural Hematoma with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Left Hemi Paresis, and Dysphagia with peg tube status. He is unable to walk or speak and his communication is limited to simple hand gestures. Sam is paralyzed on the left side of his body and receives his meals through a tube. Sam’s recovery will require a great amount of patience, time and money. Family, friends and community supporters can help ease the financial burden on his family and improve Sam’s quality of life with our support. Sam is an example of God’s grace and mercy. As believers, we pray that you will find it in your heart to contribute to this campaign and aid Sam and his family in this time of need. The WLCAA asks that you make a donation as indicated below:

Alumni member, Terri Frazier had the pleasure of
being part of an awesome surprise visit to Sam
Butler from his former Cohen Football Teammates.
PLEASE continue to lift Sam Butler and his family
in prayer during this time. Sam is slowly
progressing and is still in need of donations.
The Alumni Association had taken the responsibility
and cost of storing a variety of displaced Cohen
trophies. We are pleased to announce that we have
returned them to their rightful home. They are now
displayed at Walter L. Cohen College Prep High
School.
The Walter L. Cohen Alumni Association has
donated a total of $10,900.00 to the Band,
Football, and Athletic Departments at Walter L.
Cohen College Prep. Items include: cheer signs,
field runner signs, megaphones, mats, Color
Guard uniforms, defibrillator, 42” flat screen TV,
