ST POPE JOHN XXIII (1881 - 1963)
(Feast: 11 October)
ANGELO Giuseppe Roncalli was born in the village of Sotto
il Monte, near Bergamo, in 1881. He was the eldest son of
Giovanni Battista Roncalli (1854 – July 1935) and his wife
Marianna Giulia Mazzolla (1855 – 20 February 1939), and
fourth in a family of 13. At the age of 11 he entered the
seminary at Bergamo and later pursued his studies at the
Pontifical Seminary in Rome.
He was ordained priest in 1904. He was secretary to
the Bishop of Bergamo but from 1921onwards he served
the Holy See directly in various posts, both in Rome and in
Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, culminating as Apostolic
Nuncio to France from 1944 until 1953, when he was
created cardinal and made the Patriarch of Venice.
He was elected Pope in 1958. John XXIII made many
passionate speeches during his pontificate. His views on
equality were summed up in his statement, "We were all
made in God's image, and thus, we are all Godly alike."
He made a major impact on the Catholic Church,
especially by conveneing the Second Vatican Council. His
overall goal was to modernize the Church by emphasizing
its pastoral role, and its necessary involvement with affairs
of state. He dropped the traditional rule of 70 cardinals,
increasing the size to 85. He used the opportunity to name
the first cardinals from Africa, Japan, and the Philippines. He
promoted ecumenical movements in cooperation with
other Christian faiths. In doctrinal matters, he was a
traditionalist, but he ended the practice of automatically
formulating social and political policies on the basis of old
theological propositions.
He did not live to see the Vatican Council to
completion. His cause for canonization was opened on 18
November 1965 by his successor, Pope Paul VI who
declared him a Servant of God.
On 5 July 2013, Pope Francis – bypassing the
traditionally required second miracle – declared John XXIII a
saint, based on his virtuous, model lifestyle, and because of
the good which had come from his having opened the
Second Vatican Council. He was canonised alongside Pope
John Paul II on 27 April 2014. (Source: Wikipedia & Universalis)

PAVING THE WAY PROJECT AS announced at Masses last weekend, we are concreting the
pathway from the car park to the Church entrance. This will
start (weather permitting) on 14th October and the concrete
will be a charcoal colour similar to the
existing pavers.
The concrete will be saw cut into
600mm x 500mm blocks and parishioners
are invited to sponsor one or more blocks
as a lasting legacy to future generations in
the parish. In addition, for each block, sponsors will also have
a paver with a 46 spaces personalised engraving installed
adjacent to the concrete as a permanent on-site record. All
details are on the reservation/sponsor form which is available
from the table at the piety stall.
Last weekend, over 300 forms were taken and the reply
rate in the first few days has been terrific. Any queries can be
directed to Pat Gurrie on 0418355060 or email to

VISITATIONS OF OUR LADY'S STATUE THE Legion of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows Praesidium, is inviting
Parishioners to welcome Our Lady’s statue into their homes, which will
be a visible reminder of Our Blessed Mother who
intercedes for us. The commitments required of
those families desiring to welcome Mary into
their homes are:
1. Make a special effort to avoid sin during her
presence.
2. Perform some form of penance or sacrifice
during the week of her visit in reparation for sin.
3. Pray the Rosary as a family in the presence of her statue
each day or at least whatever part of a Rosary, which can be
accomplished.
For interested Parishioners, please sign-up on the clipboard in
the Gathering Space or contact Antoinette Spiteri at 0402423826 to
request for a visitation of Our Blessed Mother to your home.
ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH? WELCOME! But don’t just visit. Join your new Parish Family. Put
your name and telephone number on the Welcome Register
and pick up a Welcome Pack from the Gathering Space.
A member of the Welcoming Committee will be in contact
with you soon.
DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS?
DO YOU WANT TO PROMOTE IT? AS part of our efforts to raise funds, the parish
is planning to accept and publish local business
advertisements in our weekly Parish Bulletin.
This initiative is also aimed at both creating
opportunities for businesses and trades and at
serving as a local directory for parishioners to find services they
might need. For more information, please contact Joe Sequeira
at 0422 441078 or the parish office.
