2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE
ROUND 7
MATT'S MESSAGE ceo matt harris
After a week?s rest the Tooheys Newcastle RL competition heads into round 7 of the 2018 season with a Business Plaza Cup ladder with only four points separating first and last positions.
Round 6 results saw Lakes United sneak home against the Cessnock Goannas, South Newcastle upset 2017 premiers Macquarie, Central Newcastle prove too strong for Maitland, and Western Suburbs topple competition leaders Kurri Kurri. As we approach the half-way point of the season the early predictions of one of the closest competitions in recent history appears to be on the money.
This weekend's fixtures see Lakes United hosting Maitland at Cahill Oval, Cessnock travelling to Peacock Field to battle Macquarie, and Central Newcastle up against South Newcastle at St John Oval. The Kurri Kurri v West Newcastle game has been deferred due to a number of Rosella players being involved in the NSWRL representative fixture this weekend. The BarTV match of the round will be Sunday?s Central Newcastle v South Newcastle fixture and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League).
Congratulations to the eight Rebels players selected in the NSW Pioneers squad to play the QRL Rangers this Sunday at Burleigh. This strong representation was earned after our narrow loss to the Ron Massey rep team on Friday 1st June. Rebels coach Phil Williams will be filling the assistant coach role. Good luck guys.
Also on the representative front our Emerging Rebels squad had the opportunity to play a Canberra Raiders u20 development team last weekend. Under the guidance of premiership winning coach Adam Bettridge the Rebels were far too strong recording a 46 to 22 win. It was obvious that the players and coaching staff have embraced this new initiative which is extremely encouraging as we continue to grow the program in the lead-up to the squad?s post-season trip to Melbourne.
A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match-day scores by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).

REP REVIEW NEWCASTLE REBELS Senior rep footy returned to Newcastle on Friday 1st June with our Newcastle Rebels taking on a representative team from the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup competition at Maitland Sportsground. Our boys jumped out of the blocks to get to an early 6-nil lead, before the Ron Massey reps scored two quick tries to go into the half time break 12-10 infront.
The second half was also a close affair with the Rebels and the Ron Massey rep scoring pone try each. Rebels winger Josh Charles fell just short of the goal line in the dying minutes meaning the Ron Massey reps came a way with a 20-14.
After the match, selectors from both teams chose a squad who will travel to Queensland on 15th-17th June to take on the Qld Rangers. The combined team is:
1 Omar Slaimankel RMC - Mounties 10 Brendan Simpson NEW - South Newcastle

REP REVIEW EMERGING REBELS Last weekend, the Emerging Rebels travelled to Aubrey Keech Reserve in Sydney to take on Canberra. The Emerging Rebels jumped out to a 24-0 lead, but conceded two tries approaching half-time and held a 14-point advantage at the main break.
After trading blows in the early parts of the second stanza, Newcastle eventually ran away with a 20-point victory.
Coach Adam Bettridge said ?It was a good game of footy and the boys all represented themselves and their clubs well,?
?They were tough conditions and being so wet meant there was a bit of dropped ball. But it was good to see they took the program seriously and that commitment showed.?
Outstanding Newcastle under-20 second-rower Reid Alchin scored three tries and was named players' player.
?It shows what playing with men does for your game,? Bettridge said.
?Coming back to age level from first grade Reid was hard to handle.?
The Emerging Rebels will continue training once a month throughout the season before travelling to
Melbourne in October for a fixture against the Victorian under 20s.

MACQUARIE SCORPIONS
PATRON: MR COL BURNS:
A fortnight ago the Scorpions travelled to Townsen Oval to take on the South Newcastle Lions on a day where penguins wouldn?t even venture out. It was bitterly cold and a stiff southerly breeze and rain made it even more uncomfortable for the small rusted on supporters who attended. What made it worse for the Scorpions supporters was the disappointing performances from some of the teams.
The Open Grade started the day with the Under 19s scheduled to play before 1st Grade and the Open?s certainly left the form they displayed against Kurri behind them to go down to South in a game where they were never really in the game from the kick off.
The Reserve Grade had a 10-10 draw and tried very hard in the trying conditions and their defence would have certainly pleased Coach Steve Kidd. With 1 minute remaining the Scorps were down 10-8 but received a rare penalty to kick the goal and get a valuable point from the game.
The Under 19s also escaped with a draw after leading comfortably at the half time break and running with the breeze. Unfortunately a number of mistakes and controversial rulings evened the game up and again with 1 minute remaining the Scorpions were behind by 6 points but a 70 metre try to the Scorpions in the corner and the conversion that appeared to go wide gave the Scorpions a draw in a game they should have won.
Unfortunately the 1st Grade side went down 22-16 after leading 16-4 after 20 minutes into the game. Again it was errors and mistakes that cost the Scorpions dearly as it appeared every time they were in position to attack they dropped the ball, through a bad pass or incurred a penalty to allow South to move up field. This weekend we are back at home against Cessnock and the Scorpions will have to be at their best to come away
with the points in what should be 4 excellent games of football.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS
Welcome back to Cahill oval today, to all supporters and sponsors, as we take on the Maitland Pumpkin Pickers. It feels like forever since we have played here, after having only two home games from the first six.
On sat 2nd June we travelled to Cessnock, for the second time this year within three weeks. Last time we came away with four wins from five games, this time we achieved one better by coming away with five from five.
· The Ladies League Tag got us off to a great start, winning 20-6 and they keep improving every week.
· Third Grade followed and held on to a 10-0 lead to get the victory.
· Reserve Grade got themselves back in the winners circle by scoring a hundred metre try on the bell, to come away with a 26-22 victory.
· Being futures round, the U19?s played before First Grade and came away with a convincing 34-4 win.
· First grade got off to a great start, leading 12-0 at half time. Cessnock fought back in the second half, but the Seagulls managed to hold on and came away with a 14-12 victory.
All teams now are sitting in the top five, with two games to go in the first round. Hopefully we can continue with another five victories back at home today.
A for a bit of history.....
In 1986 Rip Taylor` s side dominated the competition, losing once all season. On June 15 at Cahill Oval the Seagull` s record improved to 10 wins and 1 draw (at Kurri) by virtue of a 44-2 against Maitland. The club` s depth was phenomenal this season with players like Greg Haywood, Ian Hampson, Bruce Burgess, Freddy Grant, Dave Edwards, Peter Walsh, Trevor Tuckwell, Mark Bates, Jim Fowler and Mark Hanlon prominent. Consider also Col Mathias and Mark Brokenshire suffered season ending injuries in July and the exceptional talents of Rick Stone, Steve Drinkwater, Steve Walters and Mick Sullivan often found it difficult to force their way into the top side.
We hope you all enjoy your day at Cahill Oval and we invite everyone back to Jewells Tavern for the after match presentation.
Thank you for our sponsors ongoing support
