Community reaches out to help

victims of tragic highway fatalityBy Treena Mielke

The community of Rimbey is reaching out to show its support for Angus and Ra-chel Dixon after a tragic accident on High-way 20 claimed the lives of two of their children.

Sandra VonHollen from Game On Out-doors has set up on-line auctions through Facebook and donations can also be made

at the store to help the family. To check out the auctions go to Facebook links All Ca-nadian On-line Auctions and Canada Wide Gun Auctions.

A spokesperson from ATB said a trust fund has been set up for Angus and Rachel Dixon at the Rimbey branch of ATB.

People who wish to donate may visit the branch or send email transfers to Sandra VonHollen at gmail.com until the power of

attorney is in place.Donations may also be made at Game

On Oudoors. The fatalities occurred when a south-

bound vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle on the highway near Township Road 420 at around 1 p.m. Dec. 21.

The driver and only occupant of the northbound vehicle died at the scene.

The Dixon family was in the south-

bound SUV. One child was pronounced dead at the scene and the second child, who was critically injured, succumbed to inju-ries at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

The parents and one child remain in hospital, said Const. Carmon Dutz from Rimbey RCMP.

He noted the section of the highway where the accident occurred was “terribly icy”.

Wildrose Party announces new interim leader and critic roster

On Dec. 22 the Wildrose Opposition an-nounced Calgary-Fish Creek MLA Heather For-syth as new interim leader and released an updated critic roster.

The announcement has been fully endorsed by all MLAs of the Wildrose Caucus after being passed by members of the party’s executive com-mittee.

“I am deeply humbled to receive this endorse-ment from my colleagues.  Albertans can be as-sured our team is united in purpose and solidified in our commitment to serve,” Forsyth said. “We want to send a clear message to Albertans right across the province: we are here to fight for Alber-ta, we are here to earn your trust, and never before has Alberta been more in need of the values and principles the Wildrose stands for.”

Forsyth will be joined by a re-energized Wildrose Caucus, focused on providing a prin-cipled, fiscally conservative and a dedicated op-position.

Forsyth said she will spend her time as interim leader building up support from Albertans from every corner of the province.

“We’re here to hold the PC government ac-countable, we’re here to fight and we’re here to win,” Forsyth said.  “I am ready to roll up my sleeves with our incredible Wildrose team and continue our work of getting real and tangible re-sults for all Albertans.”

Forsyth will continue in her previous role as Health and Seniors Critic.

Wildrose Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes will serve as the new Caucus Whip, while picking up the new roles as Finance, Human Ser-

vices, Education and Innovation and Advanced Education Critic.

“Albertans want an unwavering, fiscally conservative voice in the Legislature.  This means establishing needs before wants, targeting waste-ful spending, and achieving more effective and efficient government,” Barnes said.  “There is much work to be done to protect our most vulner-able, get back to basics for our kids and work on ideas to have Alberta the centre of innovation across Can-ada.  I have never been more ready for the task ahead.”

Serving as the new Wildrose House Leader will be Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills MLA Shayne Saskiw.  His other duties will in-clude Critic for Justice and Solici-tor General, Energy, Environment, International and Intergovernmental Relations, Aboriginal Affairs and Executive Council.

“We are renewed, refocused and strong as an opposition,” Saskiw said. “I am dedicated for sticking up for all Albertans and fighting for the

needs and priorities of communities from across the province in my new role.”

Livingstone-Macleod MLA Pat Stier will serve as the Wildrose Crit-ic for Infrastructure, Transportation, Municipal Affairs and Sustainable Resource Development.

“Communities across the prov-ince are facing the demands of growth and mismanaged spending on infrastructure,” Stier said. “I will work harder than ever before to ad-vocate for Wildrose ideas and Alber-tans.”

Agriculture, Service Alberta, Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour and Culture and Tourism will be listed under Wildrose Drumheller-Stetter MLA Rick Strankman’s Crit-ic portfolio.

“These departments need a re-newed voice, and a party of indi-viduals ready to speak on the issues,” Strankman said.  “Our work begins today of building an even better Al-berta.”

Smart tax moves to consider before New Year’s Eve The flurry of activity during the

last weeks of December can make it difficult to pay attention to finances. If you want to save on your tax bill come April, now’s the time to make some critical moves.

If you have a tax advisor or fi-nancial planner, it’s wise to run these ideas by them first. Here are some suggestions to investigate by year- end with follow-up in the New Year: • Accelerate your deductions and defer your income. It makes the list every year because it works. To keep your 2014 tax bill low, try to defer bonuses, consulting income or self-employment income until 2015 while taking as many deduc-tions as you legally can in 2014. Deductions may include paying your January federal and state in-come taxes before Dec. 31, real estate taxes and interest payments.• Bunch non-urgent medical expenses this year or move them to 2015. If you have non-emergen-cy medical procedures coming up, it’s a good idea to pack them into the same year so people under age 65 can exceed the 10 percent adjusted gross income (AGI) minimum for medical expenses. For those over age 65, the AGI minimum is 7.5 percent.• Make last-minute withholding adjustments. If you’ve started making more money later in the year, make sure your withholding or estimated tax payments are adjusted before Dec. 31 so you don’t face underpayment penalties later.• Evaluate your traditional and Roth IRA hold-

ings. Many people who expect their tax rate to go up in retirement convert traditional IRAs to Roth accounts in advance. Those who don’t do so keep their traditional accounts as-is. No matter how close you’re getting to retirement, it’s a good idea to take

inventory of your IRA investments to make sure they’re accessible and to contact your tax advisor if you have questions about strategy.* Contribute as much to retirement accounts as possible. Putting money away for retirement is al-ways a good idea – for your tax bill and for your future. For tax year 2014, individual 401(k) (http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/401k) contribu-tion limits are $17,500 and $5,500 for an IRA (not including catch-up contributions for taxpayers 50 or over). In 2015, those contribution limits will go up to $18,000 and $6,000 respectively.* Consider HSAs and FSAs. High-deductible in-surance plans may offer a health savings account (HSA) option that allows you to deposit pretax dollars to pay for medical expenses high-deduct-ible plans don’t cover. Flexible Spending Accounts (http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/fsa) also al-low pre-tax dollars to pay for dental care, vision checkups and glasses and over-the-counter drugs. * Gather state and local sales tax receipts. If you itemize your deductions, consider whether to de-duct state and local sales taxes instead of state and local income taxes. • Consider a gift. Individuals can give up to

$14,000 a year per beneficiary to as many people as they’d like during 2014 free of gift or estate tax. That amount goes up to $28,000 per beneficiary per year for spouses (both individual and spousal numbers will stay the same in 2015). • Make a last-minute charitable deduction. If you itemize, you can deduct for charitable contri-butions – but do some homework first. GuideStar.org lists every IRS-registered nonprofit organiza-tion, so you can do full research on the organiza-tion’s work and legitimacy as well as its tax status.• Take that home office deduction. If you use part of your home for business or if your office is an unattached structure, you may qualify for a home office deduction up to $1,500 a year. • Watch the news and keep your tax preparer’s number handy. Congress may spend its final days arguing over a variety of expired tax breaks still pending. It’s important to keep an eye on tax news between now and New Year’s Day. • Bottom line: Use the end of the year to gather re-cords and advice and make smart choices tax wise and otherwise.

New Year’s resolutionsare a timeless tradition

Believe it or not, 2015 is but a few days away and Christmas 2014 has already faded into the annals of the past, ready to be stored, once again, in a photo-graph book of memo-ries.

But, looking ahead, not back, is what we all must do and it’s almost time to move on to a new year.

And, as the days start to unfold, it will be time, once again, for the country, the province and each and every individual to fill in the blank slate of the yet to be lived days of their lives with responsible decisions which will, hopefully, benefit not only themselves, but their communities, their province and their country as well.

Clinging to such unrealistic expectations is completely naïve of course, but, perhaps, it is not out of the realm of idealism to hope for tiny incre-ments of positive change in the New Year.

The longest journey begins with a single step, and 2015 offers an opportunity for each and every one of us to take that first step to begin our own personal journey towards whatever destination we chose.

I, personally, plan on squeezing in some sort of nap before I begin the journey, again.

Trust me, I’m all about making good and posi-tive changes, but I know I will need lots of energy to do so.

A nap is a good first step, I’m thinking. And then I will be ready.

I truly believe it is good to stand in the wings of a new year which is about to unfold and reach for limits which are, no doubt, realistically unat-tainable, but possible.

In my mind, I flip back to my own personal plans, hopes and dreams that I unfailingly make each and every new year.

Lose weight. Learn a new song on the piano every month. Do something nice for someone ev-ery day. Exercise at least three times a week. Fol-low Canada’s food guide. Keep your desk clutter free every day, not just when you can’t stand it anymore. Learn a new skill.

Do not use profanity when driving or at any other time.

Do not gossip. “Ahhh, what happened to my resolutions?Even as I write this, imagining the strict re-

gime such resolutions involve, I am fairly confi-dent none of the above will happen.

Life will, no doubt, get in the way and I will fall short of the mark I have set for myself, thereby being all discouraged and ready to quit.

That’s when it’s important to get up, start over, or simply go to Plan B. Delete resolution!

But still, with 2015 an embryo waiting to be born, even with my unfailing track record of in-completion, I am ready to start anew with a fresh list.

And being an eternal optimist, I just keep look-ing up, which is good because on a clear night in late December, the timeless beauty of the constel-lations and the stars cut the night sky into a jagged patchwork of perfection.

And, once again l am reminded by the majes-tic beauty of the night sky that some things such as optimism, hope and New Year’s resolutions are meant to live forever.

And always there will be unexplained beauty, quiet moments of unexpected perfection and even the odd New Year’s resolution that actually gets kept.

So, may you all have the best New Year’s ever and may you all make and keep your own New Year’s resolutions.

Good luck with that!

A flu free New Year

It’s not too late for your influenza immu-nization

You resolve to start the year healthy. To eat well, be active… but what about your influ-enza immunization?

Influenza has ar-rived in Alberta. As of December 18, more than 1,470 cases of influenza have been confirmed in Alberta. Of these cases, 260 have been hospitalized. Tragically, 10 have passed away.

No matter how healthy you think you are, if you haven’t been immunized yet this season, you’re at risk of contracting influenza too.

The good news? In-fluenza immunization is still available, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older.

Start your year healthy and stay that way; get immunized today.

For more informa-tion, including local clinic schedules, visit www.alberthealthser-vices.ca/influenza or call Health Link Alber-ta at 1.866.408.5465.

County turns down two zoning requestsBy Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye

Two rezoning applications to Ponoka County were turned down after councillors heard opposition on the matters.

Public hearings on the requests were held Tuesday, Dec. 16 during council’s regular meeting.

The first request came from Kel-vin and Jennifer Jones to reclassify approximately five acres of land, on Township Road 432 and Range Road 11, to country residential from agri-

cultural. A portion of the property was already subdivided some years ago, which is normally discouraged in the county’s municipal develop-ment plan, stated a letter from West Central Planning Agency.

The agency further said it could not support the proposed zoning but did not have any objections. How-ever, there were two objections from neighbours, one written and one dur-ing the hearing.

Concerns of land being torn up

and loss of wildlife were raised by Rose Hage-mann, who wrote a letter to council. She suggest-ed with the Rimbey Ridge subdivision close by, adding a lot to this parcel would not be ideal.

“Too many residential lots are being subdivid-ed out of quarter sections,” she continued.

Jess Donald spoke against the request stat-ing with additional subdivisions, dogs cause is-sues with his cattle. He says dogs usually are not leashed and he had to shoot one some years ago as it was attacking his cattle.

Mr. Jones said the 5-acres is not ideal for farm-ing and would be better suited for residential use. He added he never objected to neighbours with their subdivision applications.

Coun. Mark Matejka did not feel approving the request would benefit the area considering the

subdivision nearby. “It’s not meeting a need.” The second application came from Leo and

Jolanda van der Toorn who wanted to split a five-acre parcel in half.

Located on the corner of Township Road 424 and Range Road 245, there was one letter of oppo-sition to the request from Mike Stretch and Henk Krijger. They felt having two small parcels would not benefit the area.

“Where is the beginning and where is the end?” Kriijger added during the public hearing.

The van der Toorns were not at the hearing so no other comments were made. Reeve Paul McLauchlin suggested the request was not ideal. “Splitting fives is a tough thing to do,” he said.

Both requests were defeated.

Beat the winter bluesMany people are more sluggish in winter than

in summer, but for those affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), the problem goes be-yond getting a little gloomy. People who have SAD can experience: depressed mood, lack of motivation, fatigue, and often feel tired through-out the day. These symptoms can lead to excessive time in bed or in front of the TV, neglect of usual pleasurable activities, and reduced social contact.SAD mood boosters

If you are affected by SAD there are several simple steps you can take every day to brighten up both your body and mind.• Be active. Building activity into your lifestyle

not only helps lift nega-tive feelings, it also prevents the weight

gain associated with the illness. Being physically active relieves stress, builds energy, and increases both your physical and mental wellbeing and re-silience. It is as easy as walking outside for 10-20 minutes each day. • Soak in the sun. Getting in as much sunshine as possible during the winter months can help. Make sure blinds are open during the day, with a direct path to where you sit or work. Better yet, get out-side in the sunshine whenever possible.• Choose healthy foods. For energy throughout the day, eat three meals, and have healthy snacks between meals if you find yourself hungry. Choose foods from at least three to four food groups at meals and one to two food groups at snacks. For more healthy eating information visit www.health-

yeatingstartshere.ca • Stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle to make sure you drink enough fluid during the day. The amount of fluid you need depends on your age, gender, body size and activity level. Most adults need nine to -12 cups of water per day. • Cut down on alco-hol and caffeine. Caf-feinated and alcoholic beverages disrupt your body’s internal clock, resulting in a worsen-ing of SAD symptoms.

Sandy Point

mobile home

is destroyedBy June Norvila

Ten members of the Bentley District Fire De-partment responded to a structure fire at the Sandy Point RV Resort on the southwest end of Gull Lake on the morning of December 3 around 6:30 a.m.  The fire was reported by a neighbor who was awakened by the light and noise.

When crews arrived they found a brand new park-model mobile home at lot #44 fully engulfed in flames.  Lacombe had been called but were stood down when it was determined they were not needed.

One concern was a nearby 420-pound propane tank.  It was found it to be venting properly so was cooled down and the rest of the propane dispersed.

The home was completely destroyed leaving only charred remains with damage estimated to be around $125,000.

No one was living in the home at the time and there were no injuries.  It was interesting to note that the new owners were to take possession later that very day.

The home in the adjoining lot suffered only minor heat damage to windows, flashings, etc.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but doesn’t appear suspicious.  It appears the fire may have started in the utility room that housed the hot water tank and furnace.

Crews had arrived with an engine, tender, res-cue unit, and utility vehicle.  They were on scene for about three hours.

The fire department would like to remind peo-ple to be extra careful with fireplaces, heaters, and Christmas decorations at this time of year.

All that is left is the charred remains of a park model home in Sandy Point RV Resort after a fire December 3 completely destroyed the structure and lightly damaged the adjoining property. June Norvila Photo

GALISKY (nee Skeels)Thelma Jean

Feb. 5, 1940 - Dec. 17, 2014

On February 5, 1940, Lester and Alda Skeels were blessed with an angelic little baby girl named “Thelma”, she completed their family on a little farm outside of Rimbey, AB. Thelma loved the farm life, she cherished all the time with her

Mom and Dad, she loved all animals, especially horses. She grew up as the baby sister of two older brothers (Gerald and Delmer) and an older sister (Louise). She met Dennis Galisky and they were married in 1958 they moved to Prince George and began their family. Soon after their two boys were born, Bob and John. Missing family, they moved back to Rimbey. Dennis and Thelma separated in 1976. This is when Thelma began the journey of raising two teenage boys in a town where everyone knew your name! Thelma worked for Jack Perry at the Rimbey Record and overseen 4 other newspapers. In 1981 The RD Advisor gave Thelma the opportunity to begin a new career in Red Deer with her two boys, -where everyone didn’t know your name! Thelma loved working with people and always found the good in everyone. Thelma had quite a successful real estate career, with Sutton, C.A.R.E. realty. Thelma was an active member in a few Christian churches, her faith in the Lord was unwavering. In 2000 She rekindled a friendship with a special man, Robert Watts. Over the past few years they travelled together across the US, attended car rallies and numerous visits with old friends. He was so special to her and treated her like a porcelain doll. Thelma’s health problems began 4 years ago and has steadily worsened over the last year, those who knew her, take comfort in knowing that she was cared for by an amazing, caring and passionate group of people at Villa Marie, RD. She was predeceased by her Mother and Father, brother in law Tommy Sanderson-1998, Dennis Galisky-1986, and her partner Robert Watts- 2013. Left to cherish Thelma’s memory, her two boys, John (Twyla), grandson Conner, Bob (KeriLynn) grandsons Cameron, and Dylan. To the love of my life ALLAN JAMES DAUPHINEE.

Work always separates us on important days but so farwe’ve kept the fl ame bright. Since Valentine’s Day 1995, when we met, our love has traveled for 19

years from Bonneville to Wabasca, Grande Prairie, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Robb and Fox Creek while

remaining strong from Gull Lake. So looking forward to 19 more! You’re my favorite piece of Cape Breton.

Central Alberta Buccaneers gear up

for 2015 season with new head coachThe Central Alberta Buccaneers are

well underway in preparation for their upcoming AFL season. With the sign-ing of a Devon Hand as head coach, the Bucs are entering the 2015 season with a new direction and vision. By foster-ing a football culture of commitment and accountability and recruiting a large and competitive roster, the team will “allow as much fun as possible without compromising the work it takes to win a title,” said Coach Hand. “This will be a program guys want to play in.”

Defensive end Ian Keetch, for-mer Rimbey Spartan, is heading into his sixth season as a Buccaneers and “has loved every second of it.” Keetch has found his stride in the AFL, being named to the All-Star team for 2013 and 2014 as well as crowned the defen-sive MVP in 2013. While he is one of the league’s premier d-linemen, Keetch admits that his initial transition into the league was daunting. “It was a hell of a transition from playing football with [high school] boys to playing with the men of the AFL.”

Keetch credited his recent success to Coach Hand who swapped Keetch to the defensive side of the ball. “Hunt-ing quarterbacks is natural for me and [Hand] saw that.” When asked why oth-ers should join the Bucs, Keetch said, “I use it as therapy. It works for me.”

After falling short of the 2014 AFL title, the Bucs are continuing to bolster its roster size and talent pool. With in-

creased depth, the team will be better able to endure injuries as well as avoid over-fatiguing players. To find these ad-ditional recruits, the Bucs will operate booths at trade shows during the spring (Ponoka, Lacombe, and Stettler), host its first annual Bucs Recruitment Night, and continue to have a presence in the Central Albertan community via fund-raisers and charity events.

The Bucs will continue its partner-ship with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ponoka by entering a team into the Bowl for Kids fundraiser. At this event, participants raise pledges, which greatly contribute to BBBS’s yearly operating funds, and bowl for game or two. This will be the Bucs fourth year participat-ing in this event and the team aims at raising $1200 for Big Brothers.

After completing its fourth team-blood-drive on Dec. 13 (which included 17 blood donators), the Buccaneers sent out a friendly challenge to the rest of the AFL to see which club is more willing to bleed for Alberta. On Feb. 7, 2015, the nine teams that comprise the Al-berta Football League will collectively roll up their sleeves in their respective blood clinics in order to donate. Fans and interested players are encouraged to participate.

The Bucs Recruitment Night will function as a meet and greet for inter-ested potential players. Coaching staff and veteran players will be more than willing to share information regarding

the team, its culture, its history, and, most importantly, its goals for 2015. While an exact location has not yet been decided upon, the Recruitment Night will happen on Jan. 24. For more details, follow the team’s website at www.cabuce.com.

When asked about the 2015 expectations, Coach Hand said: “When we strap up in red and black this

upcoming summer, players will be challenged to leave it all on the field for the better of the team. There will be no excuses. There will be no shortcuts. When the summer turns to fall and the dust settles, players will be able to look each other in the eye and say they laid it on the line for the team. That is what 2015 Central Alberta Buccaneers will be all about.”
