THE HOSTEL SCENE IN BARCELONA
HOSTELS : 60 proper'es who defines themself as a hostel. (legally opera'ng less than 20)
BED and BREAKFAST: 100 proper'es
APARTMENTS: They are opera'ng as a hostel (impossible to quan'fy)
TOTAL HOSTEL BEDS: 5000-‐6000 beds.
FORECAST FOR 2013-‐14: At least 1000-‐1500 new beds under construc'on. Big European players are coming to town.
OCCUPANCY: Between 70-‐75%
PRICE RANGE: From 13-‐16 in low season to 26-‐35 in High season. Decreasing in low season, increasing in high season. The difference between low and high season prices has almost doubled in last 5 years.
Although hostels have a regulation in Catalonia, they are not by the Tourism Board of Catalonia but regulated by the Youth Department. This means that we are not in the city statistics, even when we represent between 10-15% of total bednights in the city.
The “non official” hostels/apartments in the city had been increasing in the last years.
In 2012 the Catalan Goverment is also studing to apply a “Touristic Tax” of 1€ per person per night.
THE HOSTEL SCENE IN BARCELONA
The hostels are regulated by the “Secretaria General de Juventud” and “Consell Comarcal”.
Apart from all technical installa'ons being regulated as usual, they specifically look at:
-‐ Square meters of common areas: 1 sqm per bed
-‐ Distance between bunk beds: Minimum 75 cm
-‐ Each property must have a nursery.
-‐ Handicapped access: all proper'es must be accessible and must have
rooms 100% adapted according to its size.
-‐ No bars (alcohol) are allowed in the hostels
-‐ Laundry for guests and a drying place.
-‐ 1 toilet for each 6 people and 1 shower for each 12 people
