Dear Friends,
The Bible is filled with sto-ries of people who cared so deeply about their fellow human beings that the sharing of their experiences of God’s activities could not be stopped. This is seen over and over again in the Old and New Testaments. One example is found in II Kings 5: 1-19, Naaman’s slave girl.
Naaman’s slave girl took a huge risk in speaking to her mas-ter. It was an unsolicited word of hope for a cure for his disease. She was bold. Her courage was not rooted in her own abilities, place in society, acknowledged wisdom, nor wealth. Her cour-age grew from her firm belief in God’s will for the well-being of all human life. We see that trust in God, or faith, can lead anyone in any circumstance of life to boldly reach out to others with a word of hope or help.
Like Naaman’s slave girl, we also believe in God’s will for the well-being of all human life. This has been demonstrated in
so many ways in our midst. Over the past months we have cele-brated: “God’s Work, Our Hands”. Thank you for reaching out to those in need.
Our congregations have touched many in our communi-ties through VBS, donations to the Mission, Undies Sundays col-lection, volunteering for the Food Shelf and Senior Meals de-livery, the quilting ministry, Fair service, and much more.
Let us continue to have courage to risk reaching out to our neighbors with a word of hope and help. There are many places where hope and help are needed in communities.
Do not let fear or doubt silence you and stop you from serving your neighbors in God’s name. We may not always know it, but God turns our best efforts into bountiful accomplishments beyond our expectations!
Your Friend and Pastor,
Pastor Janet Warnes

Thoughts on the Ref-ormation
Neighborly Cottage Meetings
What: Once again this year we have the opportunity to gather
as friends and neighbors in various homes.
Who: All the members of OSL.
When and Where: Beginning in November; details to be determined.
Come for lively conversation, relaxation, food, and fellowship.
Brought to you by the Stewardship Committee
Worship & Evangelism
Reformation Sunday is October 30th
. Five hundred years ago, on October 31,
1517, a determined monk in the small German town of Wittenberg nailed 95
theses on the Castle Church door, and the world has been feeling the rever-
berations ever since. These events changed the church forever.
Thoughts of being a Christian Lutheran continue to echo in my head. Here
are core Biblical Lutheran Themes:
Justification by grace through faith: “For there is not distinction, since
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified
by his grace a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus...” (Romans 3:22-24)
Law and gospel: Luther said, “The law says, ‘do this’ and it is never done.
Grace says, ‘believe in this’ and everything is already done.” (Law
convicts; grace frees.)
Means of grace: Grace happens when the good news of Jesus is preached;
when someone is baptized; and when one receives the Lord’s Supper.
Theology of the cross: God died on the cross rather than leave us in our
brokenness.
Saint and sinner: A saint is a forgiven sinner. We are both saint and
sinner. Our righteousness depends on God’s grace.
Vocation: We are all part of the priesthood of all believers in that we
teach and pray for one another, and our work/profession is a calling
from God of one in faith and for the service of neighbor.
Faith in context: “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to
none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all”.
Pastor Janet
In October at worship, watch for a special series of sharing from the teachings of Martin Luther, in observance and celebration of the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation.

Create your own personal pension? Not as crazy as it sounds
As defined benefit pensions disappear, it may be up to you to create a guaranteed income stream
First came pensions, or defined benefit plans, with their guaranteed income for life; then came 401(k)s with their focus on growth from the stock and bond markets. The two were meant to work together but with defined benefit pensions quickly becoming a thing of the past, many people are left with only a 401(k) plan. While 401(k)s are an important piece of retirement savings, they were never intended to be a standalone retirement solution.
The 401(k) was meant to provide supplemental retirement savings in conjunction with pensions, savings, and other in-come vehicles to paint a fuller retirement picture. Additional resources can be used to buttress your 401(k) and pension payments in order to build out a full retirement strategy.
What could a soon-to-be retiree do about replacing that old defined benefit plan that offered guaranteed income? What if you’re one of the many people who are receiving a lump-sum from a retirement plan or have a windfall event where you receiving a sum of money?
One option could be a deferred income annuity. A deferred income annuity (DIA) allows you to set up a guaranteed in-come stream beginning later in life. Remember that the guaranteed income is based on the strength and claims paying ability of your financial institution. DIA’s are traditionally funded with a lump sum payment and the contract promises to pay you a lifetime income stream starting with a date of your choice.
For example, let’s say a DIA is purchased with a $50,000 lump sum. That money will then be held by your financial insti-tution for a defined period where it will grow with interest. After a specified amount of time has passed, you can start re-ceiving payments. This guaranteed stream of income can be used to supplement additional retirement savings.
Many options are available when it comes to retirement strategies. With traditional pensions disappearing from the land-scape, plenty of options let you design personal solutions for your own retirement. The key is knowing your options and working with a financial professional who can help guide you toward a stable retirement.

THANK YOU FOR THIS BOUNTY, GOD
Thank you for this bounty, God, that you give to me,
for grain that grows within the field and fruit upon the tree.
Thank you for the little seeds that in the Spring are sown,
and with your gifts of sun and rain have through the Summer grown.
Thank you for the farmers, Lord, and bless them for their toil,
as now they gather in the Fall this bounty from your soil.
