The New You
What are your goals for this next year? Typical goals include
watching less TV, cutting back on social media, connecting more with
the ones we love, working out more, eating less, and saving more. I
could definitely improve in each of these areas. Most of us also spend a
lot of time thinking about what to wear, how we look, what we drive,
how much we weigh, and what our neighbors think. While these
activities may be acceptable in moderation, I wonder what the Holy
Spirit thinks about how much attention we give these goals and
activities. While the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19)
and God calls us to live a disciplined life (1 Cor. 9:26-27), his greatest
desire for us is that we may be conformed to the image of Christ
(Rom. 8:29). Eternal life is truly knowing Jesus (John 17:3), following
his commandments (John 14:21), abiding in him (John 15:4), and
becoming one with him and other believers (John 17:21). As we
mature in Christ we develop his mindset (Phil. 2:5) and become “rooted
and built up in him” (Col. 2:6).
Paul prays that God would fill believers “with the knowledge of
his will through all wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so
that you may life a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way:
bearing fruit in every good working, growing in the knowledge of God,
being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so
that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful
thanks to the father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance
of his holy people in the kingdom of light” (Col. 2: 9b-12). In Christ we
have the potential to achieve all God has destined for us (Col. 2:10).
“In your
relationships
with one
another,
have the
same
mindset
as Christ
Jesus.”
Philippians 2:5
NIV
Working to develop our natural bodies, skillsets, and talents have some merit, but
at best we are polishing “the natural man” which will inevitably fade. Why not begin 2019
by focusing greater attention on the spirit within? While God has cleansed us from all
unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) if we have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, we grow
spiritually by becoming more obedient in our Christian walk: “. . . we take captive every
thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). Real strength comes from our
spiritual strength. Our solid foundation in Christ will abide and “pay dividends” through-
out eternity and will also impact and transform our natural lives.
How much time are you giving to God so that you may become more mature
spiritually? Is there anything more important than this investment? So many needs and
desires are demanding our attention. God promises that if we seek him first everything
else will become ordered in your life (Matt. 6:33). Daily offices, quiet times, scheduled
Bible readings, Bible classes, and experiencing the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist) are ways that
God has already provided to strengthen you. Actively listening and adhering to “the
nudging of the Spirit” within will create a great hunger for God which only he can fill: “As
the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for
God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2). My prayer
you is that the new you for 2019 is Christ in you!

DISAPPOINTMENT, AND SAVING GRACE
It happened again. Someone hurt my feelings. Someone chose to demote me
in what seemed an important aspect of my service life. Someone else was selected,
not me. My identity was under attack; I felt threatened. I felt disrespected. How
could they treat me this way, I bemoaned? How often do we let other people’s
opinion or judgement dictate our emotional equilibrium? In my case, it happens all too
often.
My first reaction is this: I’ll just pout and hold a grudge. I’ll show them a thing
or two. Sadly, I have learned the hard and painful way this doesn’t feel good either,
and never works for me in the long run. Resentment festers, and anger poisons the
soul. I struggled with my own sinful attitude. I wrestled with this for weeks. How
foolish I am.
My mother had a saying for just this experience. “Child, you wear your feelings
on your shirt sleeve. Learn to let things go, like water off a duck’s back.” Somehow,
this did not sweeten the bitter pill I was asked to swallow.
How many “bitter pills” in life are minor incidents I choose to blow way out of
proportion? Could this be Satan tempting me once again with my inflated self
concept? Could this be the devil’s heinous way of diverting my energy from my faith?
Could this be an opportunity to reevaluate my priorities? Could this, truly, be a
blessing? What is the Holy Spirit teaching me here?
To soothe my wounded ego, I turned to the Word. By no mere accident or turn
of fate, I opened the Bible to Ephesians 4:1-3: “As a prisoner of the Lord, the I (Paul)
urge you to LIVE A LIFE WORTHY OF THE CALLING YOU HAVE RECEIVED. Be
completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing one another in love. Make every
effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace;” and verse 7: “But to
each one of us GRACE HAS BEEN GIVEN, AS CHRIST APPORTIONED IT.” (NIV,
emphasis mine)
How can I wail about such an occurrence when Christ died for me? I see His
scarred hands, and my wounded pride fails in comparison. I hear Him calling me to a
higher level of faith, and I dare not disappoint Him. Here is my prayer:
Jesus, forgive my errant, selfish ways. I sincerely repent my sin of self pity.
You have called me to be holy, and to obey all Your commands. Lord, forgive my
enemies, and deliver me from Satan’s snare, for the taunts me with the grace You
have apportioned to me, so much more than I deserve. Lord God, I bow to Your
sovereignty. Your mercy is sufficient once more. In Your blessed name I pray, amen.
